Since AMD's roadmaps showed there won't be SR FX processors for the year 2014, I'm just going to jump onto an AM3+ platform to replace my PC I smoked a few weeks ago.

For now, I'm likely going with an FX-8320 and an Asus M5A99X Evo R2.0. But I'm not sure of what RAMs with particular chips (Elpida, Hynix, Micron) to get for OCing... anyone able to advise? Can't really afford premium RAM so if anyone has a good lead on relabelled chips on value RAMs it would be real nice.

I was actually leaning towards that, but I did a quick read and other users have experienced bugs during OCing. No SLI for me, so I don't need a 990FX. If I could find a 970 that comes in a good OCing package I certainly would be happy. But thanks for your recommendation.

Another thing that drew me to the Asus was the digital 6+2 VRMs... couldn't help but be cautious as I blew my VRMs on my Biostar TA790GXE. That board didn't come with VRM temp sensors but I pushed them too far even with VRM cooling...

How about RAM chips? Any nice ones to play with? Would be lucky if I could find binned but proven ones on value RAMs, just a little bit of voltage and they will perform as well as their premium cousins heh.

Yup, I'm planning for 2 x 4GBs, but do AMD FXs prefer timings or all out memory bandwidth? cloudwan ah_khoo any cheap and good set of RAMs under RM300 you can personally recommend? Buying procs and mobos are easy, RAMs on the other hand - too many choices, only one selection

Looking at it now, 2 x 8GB sounds more futureproof Reviews say 16GB kits are generally much more difficult to push but definitely more usage worthy in the long run. Saw a seller selling Crucial Ballistix Elite 16GB kits here, with those timings I'm guessing it's likely Micron...

Reading all about Kaveri has really gotten me interested on how it would work out - if you see those leaked slides from AMD the current FX series will be used till 2015... That just sealed my decision to not buy one. Can't make myself buy something when a new release is on the horizon

You're right cloudwan did some further reading, I couldn't remember where I got the news from but a person from AMD mentioned he never ever saw that slide in his life... but he still neither denied nor confirmed how AM3+ will live on. If it's fake, and with the previously leaked slide stating AM3+'s existence till 2014, it ends up the same - waiting for Kaveri would be better.

FM2+'s max TDP is at 95w - it certainly doesn't categorize it as a enthusiast part but the new techs that come with it certainly makes it interesting. I'm in the same boat as ah_khoo as AM3+ doesn't have PCI-E 3.0 neither native USB 3.0... I know that the most cards we have in the market aren't even unable to saturate PCI-E 2.0 but being enthusiasts as we all are, enthusiasts LOVE revisions and would snap up anything that makes the PC run faster... no way AMD would still leave AM3+ alive down the road and still call it an 'enthusiast-segment'.

Now all I have to do is to wait and see official Kaveri benchmarks. Nothing to lose if I have to wait another two months or so...

Given how tight AMD is at the moment - if Kaveri succeeds it's highly likely a new chipset with all the new techs included will be introduced, but the only question is when. It's likely that they are fully concentrating on Kaveri that any new enthusiast products from AMD will likely show up in customer's hands after at least a year. By then, DDR4 will probably be mature enough to be used, I suppose.
