hello, to all bros working in sg. This kind of questions pop in every now and then, but I will love to have ur opinions guys. Just recently, I was offered a job with a basic of $6k. Further details like benefits yet to be determined/discussed. Working location is in Jurong West.

my question is:
1) any decent place recommended for rent with respect to the working location? what are the rentals are we looking?
2) looking forward to drive to work. Is that feasible or I should just stick to MRT/buses?

some infos of my background:
1) just married, probably expecting our first child next year. this will be my biggest headache. Not entirely sure if my wife tag along or she should just stay where she is. Thought of flying back to KL every fortnight. If she were to follow, is $6k enough for both of us? Am i looking at bigger area of rented rooms/unit? How much will they be?
2) 5 yrs exp, current work involves structural designs in oil, gas & petrochemical industries. Is $6k sufficient? I have no idea what are the market salary atm in sg. Offered job demands offshore line of work (based in office).

thx for all of your feedbacks guys, this has help to firm up my decision. I will be working in SG alone, while my wife will stay back in KL if the deal falls thru. She wont be alone at home, parents will accompany her. She will live her life like normal, except that I wont be by her side on weekdays, this sucks. But before that, both of us have to sit down and discuss thoroughly.

The cost of living for a married couple in SG is too much to bear, especially the rental already set me back at least $1.5k. Plan to bring my car down SG, but its impossible unless I stay in JB, after reading the earlier posts.

Time to brush my nego skills, hehe. Btw, anyone has come across this company, FMC Technologies? How are the working environment and benefits?

OOT, this thread is super active man, only 1 day difference already increase another 4 pages.

Outskirts u mean Jurong West or Up north areas? There are many ads on Gumtree with price range of 300-600 if you know how to use the filter function, locations aint far away from CBD... SG is small anyway.

I was looking at whole unit rental (2 rooms) for a family of 3 ppl (plan to have our first child next year) with working location at Jurong West, so accomodation is around the vicinity. Mind recommend any property-for-rent websites that are useful?

It all boils down to where is your work place and where you going to stay in JB. If your work place in Jurong and you stay in places like Tmn Pelangi in JB, it's actually nearer that traveling to Sengkang or Punggol. Another factor is the traveling time, shift work timing unlikely to encounter jam at checkpoint but office work might.

I have rule out the option of staying in JB; I have relatives in SG, so I will have a peace of mind if my wife were to come down together with me. Yes, you are right, based on the working location, it is nearer to actually travel from JB according to my relatives.

Bro, are you working in FMC Technologies based in Gul Circle, Jurong?
*
Not now; in the future, probably yes but that depends what FMC can offer. Knew anyone from FMC?

Yes i have come across FMC and their competitors in the field of subsea manifolds and assemblys. I used to do inspections for a competitor of theirs and a large number of employees of this company are ex-fmc staff.

Haha, your statement is very disturbing, bro. So did you manage to find out what are their reasons of leaving their previous company? tongue.gif

Ivan, it's early in the morning & you already start dreaming? Nevertheless, it's good to have this kind of dream once a while tongue.gif
After filtering O&G companies, I think those direct competitors that could threaten FMC in terms of offshore services are only a few, namely AS & CAM.
Btw, my wife is reluctant to move to SG with me, and the best part is she wouldn't want me to leave her side as well smile.gif ; dilemma, dilemma.
