Newbie here..

Just bought R60 (T5500) less than 2 weeks ago, still tinkering with it. I was debating between Dell 640m and this, but the R60's free 80GB porta-hdd and extra 512mb RAM deal sealed it for me tongue.gif

Why IMB mean by built to last? Why they are so popular eventhough it's ol skool design?

IBM had given in people a professional image, whenever people think bout IBM, people will think bout business + formal looking laptop.. the unique design also gives the engineer to concentrate on the internal electronic design, hence u'll notice IBM normally comes w less heat

business people wants their data to be secured rather than high end spec/ multimedia, hence u'll notice IBM built quality surpasses others laptop, yet their spec is always lower than other brand laptop.. however IBM has the best keyboard, 10 out of 10 people will start to like typing after using it, and becoz of its durability housing, u'll enjoy moving it around, unlike other multimedia laptop, i care less bout it and up till now it's still as tough as i first bought

haha ...you are wrong....ibm is not dropping but is actually they try to grab as much as asian market because if u realize in the past years Ibm price is very high as most parts is from US and assembled either in korea/ china and repackaging in singapore then into malaysia. IBM thinkpad did renew and enhance their unit and even give new system alike roll cage chassis ( notice that new r60/t60 ram upgrade from below touchpad not from bottom of notebook) future is alike face recognition security system will out soon.

IBM alike ppl say is international business machine.

IBM is smart by selling out their business to LEnovo chinese people because they know that partnering with giant lenovo will confirm they can have better in price of production and hence lower selling price and give opportunity to gain more sales but their main profit comes from after sales service (warranty / hardware services)

Lenovo come new model which is not made by IBM factory but trying to implement some of the features that thinkpad have alike fingerprint security but is without the embedded security subsystem chip, one touch recovery system ( notice the word thinkvantage rescue and recovery when it boot up in lenovo notebooks ).

lenovo is far more cheap with difference around 400-500 even same specs but wat IBM thinkpad gives is superb chassis and quality.

Hehehe, that i have to agree... For its reliability and good performance, they have to "spoil" things with that plain and uninspiring design... However, after using this PC for more than a year, i've already got used to that reddot thingy! laugh.gif

Just to ask, how much is a cooling fan? I may want to consider one as i use this laptop everyday and at times, i get worried about the heat the computer generates...

u r using r50e...u might not really need it and maybe yes depends ur model number, as i know, r50e with pentium 4 processor will need as the heatsink is not a copper heatsink and there is still parallel port behind and at which newer models had took out the parallel port n better copper heat sink.

if u wan to get a notebook cooler, u may as well diy like our brother in this lowyat forum.

haha

Sorry for the late revert .
Been using it for the last three years .Bought by company and cost around 7K plus. So far so good but had a heartbreak when the hardisk gone kong .
So far things that was claims under warranty
1. hardisk
2. Cooling fan

Since the warranty gonna expire soon and the only option to upgrade is either DELL or HP .

Any model to recomended ?
