If you just sign up a phone package without data you cannot receive/ send SMS. Some people want this way. If you have a data plan and you disable it you won't receive SMS. Most phone plan come with both but you said you don't want data at all

SMS works with or without data plan. You don't need data plan to sms. If this is the case, i think those using nokia 3310 also need to sign up for data plan to sms................

True but SMS is data and he doesn't want data on his phone

KIES updates is region specific. Released in UK does not mean it will be available immediately here. That is always Samsung's problems - we just got to wait, probably another month or more ; no one really knows
Actually, just flash yourself with Odin - the official leaks are already at XDA - check page 1 for the links . Download takes maybe 30 minutes, flashing 2 minutes, reboot another 5 mins and you have it on your phone

guide has stated it. PDA. Read the guide before doing anything. Link on page 1 as per UncleBenny.
Yes.

It does but don't see much difference. Save a little battery though.

Added on July 7, 2011, 11:51 amI have a question here hope those pros can answer me. Currently using:

XXKF2

Firmware info
PDA:XXKF2
PHONE: XXKF2
CSC:OXAKF2
Build date: 11/06/2011

My question is, is there a way to check if this is the latest one or is an older one? How do we differenciate it? Say for example now I am on XXKF2, latest should be XXKF3? Also, If I am using XXKF2 now, there will not be any issue if I am going to flash over to say JPKF3 for example right?

Still trynig to understand this thingy here!

Normally newer firmwares terminology is named higher up on alphabets/or number. Naturally we would assumed firmware upgrades should be better but is again not necessary so. Sometimes upgrade could have more bugs !! For those who want to have the latest firmware - just upgrade and assess yourself
You can flash any firmware - does not mean Msian set must flash Msian firmware - you can flash Europe, Middel East, UK, HK etc - it will not spoil your phone. Similarly you can flash Europe phone modem if you wish to replace the Asian modem. You can have a rojak mix of say UK firmware and having an Asian phone modem. Mine even though on a cook rom, I change the kernel and the phone modem and did not follow the rom's cook recommendation

Warranty is VOID with unofficial firmware even if is official from other countries

Yeah..Using stock email app..which cannot MARK ALL AS READ..

Anyone can recommend a better email app that can use as alternative?  flex.gif

HIGHLY recommende use K-9 Mail. - is free ; use it and you will never want to use the default email ( which is just too plain)

Features of K9 mail i like :

- set size of email download
- set time to refresh and download mail
- set mail storage location
- set association /sync with mail servers - keep on server or delete on server vice versa
- set various email accounts - can read email according to account or read all as one download
- set display ( eg fonts sizes ) for many categories
- set sent mail features with signature, bcc, etc
- plus many others too long to list here - go check it up yoursef
- Batch selection to manage email - selective deletion example

Is FREE ands NO ads interference

Uncle, can I confirm that both stock email client and K9 email both download the email and store in the phone?

Added on July 7, 2011, 1:55 pm

Thank you uncle for your clarification. I been reading for so long but worried to flash something looks different from my current one.
*
Emails downloaded remain on the phone. For K9 you can set it that it remains on phone if you have assigned it to be deleted on mail server from your computer. Usually most email clients on computer you can set once email downloaded - either delete from server immediate or let it saty on server for a period of time. These storage period on server is more controlled on company email servers
For the default email - I am not too sure whether it remains on phone when the mail is deleted from mail server

but actually when u connected to KIES, does it really show you something regarding updates? like no updates will pop up no updates, and otherwise. Plus i only see list of my contacts, pictures, videos, etc, no firmware is displayed in the browser.

Btw, CSC is for LBKE5 is where?
*
If there is a firmware update available, once you connect your phone to PC and on KIES - you will be prompted to update. If there is no update available, you will see nothing

Wanted to try on K9 but one thing made me keep going back to default mail client. I'm using 2 email account, 1 is hotmail and 2nd is my company email(POP Server), by using the default email client some how it will manage to configure automatically as push mail and it actually works tested on that.  Where on K9 i only can configure it as poll account and no idea how to configure it as push.
*
One way to get it like a false " push" is to set the retrieve email time to every 5 minutes ?? But this method will drain your battery as every 5 minutes it will check your mailbox unlike real push which occur only when there is mail

i guess nobody bothered with factory restore -- everyone just get the phone, wipe, flash rom, etc... lol...

Yes you are right. The moment i root it i no longer think about stock rom or warranty. I am always mentally prepared that i will not be able to claim if phone kaput. It is because of this i always dare to try if any new stuffs come up. I rarely go and ask around other users of any issues. Best test do yourself and assess it yourself. This is also reason i usually buy ap sets since usually cheaper but this sgsII ap is expensive vs final original release. Anyway i am different from many users as buying and test gadgets is my hobby

Kies tells me that:

This version of the device cannot be updated.
Firmware PDA:KF1 / PHone: KF1 / CSC: KE5 (XME).

Is this normal for a phone bought from maxis? Really cannot update firmware?
*
No lah. This is just poor english by the koreans. What they actually mean there is no update available yet. Any phone from any country can be updated. Take yours to UK now plug in uk simcard and you can update your firmware immediate. Infact no need go uk, if you have a UK sim card now can update here

Display at no 1 or 2 on battery usage is normal as this eats up most battery life. If you are in a well lit place eg office just slide down right to left and you will still have a good display. Actually i would say setting it to auto is not so good as i noticed the auto setting always higher than i usually need. So i prefet manual control

Hey all,

Just in case you need the original kernels to remove the yellow triangle after root, you can get it from here.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671

sorry if the above link has been posted before, but could not find it on the first page.
*
It is long posted in page 1 post#4 . The one you post is a recent third party hack of insecure kernel and he is just reposting original kernels obtained
elsewhere
I will post up this link too

for call forwarding, is it a network thing or phone thing? i notice the phone  has call forwarding capability. just set the number and that's it?

In term of call charges, how does it work?

Lets say

1) Phone A call Phone B
2) Phone B set call forward to Phone C

In this case, would will be charged what?
*
This is a network thing. You have to check with your telco ,. I can quote you mine. You need to register with telco to have this activated. I remember paying RM 10 as one time service charge. Mine is Celcom postpaid and all calls divert/forward to my Digi prepaid or Digi postpaid, I need to pay Celcom 10 sen for every call divert irrespective of call time. AFAIK only postpaid accounts allow divert/forwarding

Gratz!
Guys, I have a question. If I going to root using Villian ROM, all will be wiped right? I back up using CWM and once install everything, I just restore data using CWM again? Not sure how that works actually! blink.gif
*
Let me illustrate how CWM works. Example your phone has rom ABC . Using CWM recovery you can do a full rom backup of ABC rom. You then decide to flash rom DEF - depending on rom, some will not need you to clean data/factory reset, some will. Assuming rom DEF wants you to do this step , after flashing you just get a clean rom - all your data/setting/app will be wipe clean. You CANNOT use CWM to restore - if you do so, you are just replacing your new rom back to rom ABC with all its original data

You should instead use Titanium Backup to backup all your apps/supporting apps data or you can use MyBackupPro which will also have a separate feature to backup your contacts, calendar, call log etc - you need root to have MBP backup your apps data or else it will not backup apk file only

I am always amazed at you guys wanting to watch a full length movie on your phone. It is even a torture for me watching it on my Galaxy Tab and previous iPad. Watching short video clips is still tolerable . Maybe I am getting too old for these
