legally, he cant do anythign to make you pay, as no black and white regarding the free stuff. so he was wrong to do it for you without documentation.

on another hand, if you could spend 150k on reno... to save the trouble or fear of him getting gangsters to interfere, just pay him and let him leave.

you'll be lucky if he didnt come back and ask for 10k or more. and perhaps you're already very lucky he didnt run away with your money half way through the reno.

also, the "extras" he did for you, is it really worth 5k?....if yes i suggest just pay him la. sometimes ppl do business also wanna make some money, maybe material price DID increase midway through the reno and cause him to work at a lost.

therefore, like i said...5k, just pay and move on. lesson learnt.

i have seen many worse cases. which is why i say your 5k is not a considerable amount. i have seen contractors running away with huge sums of money, not to mention the contractor was an old fren of my fren.

yes we all hate cheaters, but no one is perfect. they also need to make a living. people do make mistakes also...he might have underestimated the extent of your reno, and quoted you less. Reason i say this is because he only asked for 5k more, and not 10k or 20k.

pay him the 5k...ask him to leave, forget the pillars. move on. your family's safety is more important than that 5k... money can be earned. treat this as another experience in life. no point wasting more time worrying this and that, in the end cause more fear and stress only.

i think the majority here have spoken, and advised you to just move on. time is precious, more so your safety.

i think someone previously gave a good idea, pay him 5k for the pillars, the balance 5k pay after a few months if you have no other complaints.
