Hi guys,

I only managed to get a CCC in A Level. I know the result is pretty poor. I am planning to study computer science at UNMC but the requirement is BCC. Is it possible that I will get admitted?

I am really worried because Monash will start their orientation next week. I am considering for not going the orientation while waiting for the offer from UNMC.

What do you guys think?
*
If nothing works out with UNMC, you could always go to monash in the february intake yes? Whereas nottingham doesnt have a feb intake for computor science, ive checked..

i heard that your student union has clubbing nights and stuff like that though? whats that like eih? and do they foot the bill or they just transport you guys to the clubs? @>@
*
This club night thing sounds interesting.. People warned me that nottingham has no life as its in the middle of the jungle, however if stuff like this is organized it might be fun biggrin.gif

Well I will just have to get involved in lots of societies and sports I guess.
I was curious about what sort of dress code there is at Nottingham? If there's no official one, if someone could tell me what most students wear to class that'd be great.. Need to start shopping biggrin.gif

Guys, I have been allocated a single ensuite room.. If anyone could tell me what sort of furniture I can expect that would be great..
Also after I got my accommodation offer, I paid all the deposits and advances and all and sent it in, still haven't heard back from the uni confirming my payment.. Is that normal?

Payment receipt? I thought you only get a receipt after you paid something. I think most people pay on the registration day, where you proceed to make your student ID as well based on the receipt - at least true during my batch.
I think is a pretty new course, but should be similar to the 4th year of MEng, not sure if we have active civil engineering students here though. While you'll have your classes with the MEng students, I am not sure if there will be same students doing the same course since it's new.

Security issue is never reassuring here (all TTS), but common sense helps a lot. Just remember to lock your door, use more than one lock for main door, always travel in pairs/groups at night etc.
Shuttle bus will stop on the main road only, and thus you'll need to walk to outside if your unit is inside the residential area.
I think that's great. You get table, chair, wardrobe, bed - basically enough for one person's staying. If you paid over the weekend, there's no way they can confirm the payment. Just ask them again (if you haven't) tomorrow, during their working day.
*
I paid on a friday, two weeks ago.. Just a bit worried as the amount was almost 2500 RM and still no acknowledgement lol.. Out of curiosity, is it a single bed or double bed? Thanks for the help tongue.gif

Which mobile service provider is best? In terms of price, connectivity and also data services? Also is it pretty easy to get a sim from the area or should I get on from KL? smile.gif

Not in UNMC, but probably in Kajang. You can learn "mainstream" instruments in UNMC though.
Maxis has the best coverage although Celcom is pretty good as well but they are more expensive.
Digi has slightly worse coverage but a more affordable package.
Umobile has very affordable package but I can't tell about its coverage in UNMC - it's in the jungle after all.
Yes4g boasts the fastest speed but not sure about its coverage as well.

Maxis, Celcom and Digi are the more established carriers in Malaysia, Umobile and Yes4g are newer in the game.
*
Thanks for the prompt reply man.. A friend at swineburne is using digi I think, guess I will go for that smile.gif Also all these sims are freely available in the area yeah?

Guys, what would be the best place in KL to buy a laptop..? Is there any specific mall or something I should go too, or is any electronics shop fine?

Well, welcome to Malaysia, and welcome to the University of Nottingham where you feel the shitty service of accommodation office. Never anyone I met say even a good word about it.
1. I am not sure if they have an office in Edu Square. Else, their office is in the on-campus halls, i.e. in Tioman Halls. I haven't dealt with them for the past 2 years and can't advise if they have changed their places or not. You'll need somebody else's input on that.
2. Nope, it's not open! But you may want to call to try if there is any special arrangement for you to take the key on that day from other personnel (like security guards) - although I think the shitty them won't give a shit about it.
3. Let them hate you, why do you care? Just call them, email them, until they are willing to reply. If you have paid, tell them to secure the room - not just reserved. Last thing you want is they gave away your room to others and they'll process refund (which is another shitty process to go through).

Anyway, rest assured that the bad stuff is confined within the accommodation office alone. On the academic end, things are pretty positive and I believe you can see the forumers here are satisfied and proud of the education.
*
The accomodation office seems to really suck. Been over a month since I sent all my deposits for on campus accomodation, still havent received any receipt. Hopefully they havent given away my room to someone else and hopefully I get that damn receipt on time, otherwise dont know what to do.

1. Should be very very few, don't think it will go over 10. There isn't that many people interested in taking a Master's don't they?
2. You may need to attend some classes in evening if the course (or part of it) you join is also offered as a part-time basis. This is to accommodate for those candidates but I don't think there's any lessons beyond 8pm.
3. Hostel la.. not hotel. LOL! Yes, each wing has a kitchen and a dining hall and a shared fridge.
4. There's gym, my friends do go there. Not sure if can be said well-equipped but at least people are using it.
5. Play real life slender since it's forest? LOL.. Basically rushing for assignments during peak season. Else, go somewhere else. The only entertainment here is Broga hill hike, best done in the morning.
6. Limited part time job like being receptionist of admission office, librarian etc. You may try to ask if you can be a tutor (since you taking Master's) in your department.

MayBank and Bank Rakyat (or RHB?).
If your HSBC has some MEPS or similar thing, it can be used with a charge of RM1 per withdrawal made. Else you probably need to come to HSBC to get the MEPS system in your card. Withdrawal from ARM of its own bank does not charge so it's good to get the bank it has in the campus.
*
Thanks dude but I didnt understand half of that lol tongue.gif Not sure what kinda system the card has, will check on that.. So what banks can the on campus ATM be used with for sure? Without any charge? smile.gif

Maybank, and one other ATM (I can't remember is RHB or Rakyat Bank).
MEPS is like a network that allows card (if enabled for MEPS or similar network) that does not belong to the bank to be used with that bank ATM as long as the ATM has the MEPS network enabled (usually yes).
In short, if you have a HSBC card that has MEPS, you can use it on a Maybank ATM (with MEPS enabled). There will be RM1 service charge for each transaction/withdrawal if you use it that way.

Wiki page about MEPS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysian_Ele..._Payment_System
*
Just got off the phone with HSBC, they said it is an international VISA card and can be used around the world.. I asked them to check on the MEPS thing anyway tongue.gif I have to be sure, because this is what my parents will use to send me rent and living expenses and so on.. I plan to withdraw it using my HSBC card and then deposit it in my malaysian account. Anyway thanks for all the help bro biggrin.gif

got my unconditional offer letter yesterday, and applied for my student visa today! Yay! I hope the student visa comes on time smile.gif

anyway I'll be going to Kajang tomorrow, can I visit the school? Is there anyone from the school staff who can "take me for a walk" in the uni? xD

trying to get a laptop, but don't know what to get. is a macbook appropriate for an engineering student? because in some uni their engineering software are windows only.

Just gave my passport in to stamp my visa tongue.gif Now all I have to wait for is my accommodation receipt biggrin.gif

Wow! I just applied for my visa today xD. Still don't know what to do about my accommodation, on-campus didn't reply me, going to look at a room in TTS2 tomorrow (or the day after).
Yeah I know, haha, but I need to buy another copy of Windows 7 (don't know if "Indonesian technique" aka buy the pirated version is applicable in Malaysia xD), and Windows performance on Mac is not really great (I've tried), battery life decreased by a lot and the system goes on fire xD.
*
Lol I got my accomodation offer and paid the deposits and havent heard from them since tongue.gif Hopefully they have not given my room away.
On a happier note freshers week seems to have some exciting activities lined up:

Just a quick question, is there a washing machine and dryer in the building/floor? If not what should we do..? Also what about the ironing facilities?
