What is the best free antivirus software around? The only one I can think of is Microsoft Security Essentials, but I'd like to hear more about other free ones.

There are many free antivirus around. You can try using Avast free edition as well as it is quite light. If you feel the overall protection is not good, you can install Comodo Firewall on top of your antivirus as Comodo can give a solid protection. They were free after all.

Vote for comodo internet security. Better then antivirus alone. BTW there is no best av only highest detection rate. Most important is free hehe

U can renew license after 1 year for Avira and Avast, AVG?? MSE detection rate is low, however it do not use lot resources..

I use MSE atm.

Used to use AVG/Avira/Avast.

Avast was just...weird.
AVG was overrated then and started to feel unreliable.
Avira....I feel they have a good shield/real-time protection system but their virus cleaning system suck balls. <-- Caught a few diff type of virus/worms [ofc not the ordinary ones] and it couldn't get rid of it. doh.gif

I feel MSE is alright.

Avira has been slacking lately. They were good. And now they start to include web based protection as an add on after you install it. Its is surprisingly slower than before they had the web protection thing.

The chinese 360 protection is actually developed by Kingsoft in China. Supposed to be the best antivirus in China. It works very well if u are into video clients like PPS, QVOD and such. Because the AV will not treat those software as malware like most USA ones does. But the thing is, i still do not trust software coming from China simply because their goverment plants monitoring codes inside every software.

I'm starting to use Avast now. It has improved a lot since 3 versions ago. The last ones were a little buggy IMHO.

AVG is still not on my recommended list. So is MSE. Though they work just ok. One software that i can never live without is MalwareBytes. Antivirus or not, this one makes my life a lot easier.

my experience on free antivirus program are:

1. AVG Free
2. Sophos
3. Norton (trier edition)?
4. Avast
5. MSE
6. AVIRA

first place go to....

AVIRA!!!

LAST Place go to....

Sophos

cannot compare with the premium one lah
especially internet security version
of coz there a lot more good than this free one

But Comodo offer a free version of Comodo Internet Security 2011
i want to try it first..hehehe
