What is the best free antivirus software around? The only one I can think of is Microsoft Security Essentials, but I'd like to hear more about other free ones.

That's one of em....avast, avira, avg all does good work....for good detection rate, avira does well..avg and avast does detection and removal well |

There are many free antivirus around. You can try using Avast free edition as well as it is quite light. If you feel the overall protection is not good, you can install Comodo Firewall on top of your antivirus as Comodo can give a solid protection. They were free after all.

I use MSE for all my machine. Why? Coz its free AVG, Avast or Avira will expired in one year time(free edition), dunno can renew license after that or not~ |

Vote for comodo internet security. Better then antivirus alone. BTW there is no best av only highest detection rate. Most important is free hehe

I use MSE atm.
Used to use AVG/Avira/Avast. Avast was just...weird. AVG was overrated then and started to feel unreliable. Avira....I feel they have a good shield/real-time protection system but their virus cleaning system suck balls. <-- Caught a few diff type of virus/worms [ofc not the ordinary ones] and it couldn't get rid of it. I feel MSE is alright. |

Avast definitely. Just remember to turn off the sound once installed- to get rid of those alarm sounds
