Guys, i managed to get a 2nd test drive today. Im more impressed now. Here is my take on the car:

Acceleration & pickup

I had 4 adults in the car including the salesman. Managed to get a straight clear road and floored the pedal. The acceleration was sluggish for the first 2 secs and then the power kicked in. I must say its very much comparable to the Teana with its Xtronic unlike what i mentioned earlier. The engine has got a certain vroom to it more like a rumbling tiger when the RPM passes the 2000 mark. Some might love it but i think it didnt sound too refined for my taste. The Teana and Camry were a tad more refined. But the power was there and the pickup was really impressive despite its heavier weight. I would think the harshness of the engine will improve over time since i was the 1st to test this car when it arrived yesterday.

Handling & Road Grip

I chose a deserted roundabout and did about 7 rounds at about 80kmph with the full load of passengers. I must say i am quite impressed with its cornering ability and road grip. There was only marginal body roll (much better than the Camry at lower speeds). The 18 inch tyres and probably traction control really kept the car stable. Not sure if 80kmph was fast enough for a roundabout but its certainly the fastest ive been on one. Its a small roundabout so turns would have been sharper.

Brakes

The brakes are quite good and stopping power was quite evident. I even tried cornering braking while taking the roundabout and the stopping power was really good. I hit about 110kmph before i came up to a traffic light and slammed the brakes (not enough to engage the ABS though). It surely has a confident feel.

NVH & Wind Noise

As mentioned earlier, i hit 110kmph and tried different scenarios with the sunroof just to gauge the NVH of the sunroof. I tried with the ceiling panel open but with the glass closed and also with both closed. The effect was the same. Virtually no wind noise even at high speeds. Not sure if it will hold up at around 140-150kmph though. Didnt feel any windo noise coming from the doors or windows as well which mean the door seals are quite good. Hope they last though. But during hard acceleration, the engine could be heard and it does sound a bit harsh. But once you reach cruising speed, the engine is virtually silent.

The whole test drive lasted about 1 hour (longest ive been). I must say im more impressed now. Im almost certain to get the Optima K5 now. Have started asking around to get the best deals. Best i got so far was a RM700 rebate.

No worries on driving 150 kmph.It is not noisy.Even my friends commented they don't feel it is around 150. I agree the initial first few seconds it takes time to accelerate.

The only question I have is whether for pure city driving and driving through congested area,FC return around of 8 to 8.5 km/l, is it good enough?

Bro, thanks for the review. Now let's talk about ethics.

1) You are thrashing someone's car, one that wasn't designated as a test drive unit. And the way you put it, looks like you held no punches

2) After thrashing that car, and concluded that you love it, you still had the cheek to go around asking for the best price, when the ethical thing to do is to book with the sales guy who colluded with you.

Being frugal and calculative is one thing, being a general prick is another. You better quickly buy yours before I start looking around lol. God forbid I end up with the car that you thrashed...

1) The car that i used was in fact the display car at the branch. Its still there today (i checked). Their actual delivery units are at the store at the back. They have 6 due for delivery.

2) I had already told the salesman that im looking for the best discounts. This guy is now trying to get me a higher trade in value for my own car in lieu of a discount.

Trust that clarifies. And pls dont call me a prick.

Lol..test the car until 1 hour...you think you buying BENTLEY ? Even people who buy Bentley dont test until 1 hour..

So after testing for 1 hour, you better as hell be sure you book the car. These are the people who make the real buyers suffer and wait ..After u got ur K5,pls post up some pics here ya cybermaster

Ok if you maintain that it was a test drive unit then my apologies. I was under the assumption that you test drove another car that was about to be delivered like the first time you tested one.

I'm curious though as to how you managed to wrangle a unit for testing since official test drives are only available mid March?

i'm very much interested with the new K5 as i'm looking for my 2nd car. few options including K5. went to KIA showroom in glenmarie shah alam today to see it.

was amazed by the size of the boot! its huge!
then there was it. nothing else impressed me.
the built can be say slightly lower than japs, but with 5 yr warranty i dont think u need to worry much.
but the dashboard / fascia plastic is not up to my expectation.
the door are not as solid as japs, IMHO, no nice 'tummbb' sound and felt light
the leather inside was not impressive, stitching and quality
somehow i dont see myself driving this car in the future so i ended up my visit in only 15 mins
by the way, the sales person said they are doing a customer day next weekend, so u can test drive car, including K5.

Hey there, sounds like you're currently driving a Jap car. Which model is it and which are the other cars that you have shortlisted?

Yes bro, totally agree with u.. I cant understand how people can say the k5 door is solid when my vw polo door is so much more heavier than the k5 door. K5 door feels cheapo and light..Its even lighter than my honda city too.. If u dont believe, i welcome u all to come and close my city n polo doors..then u will know whats solid..

Anyway, not here to bash or what, buy what u like and if u think k5 is a great car , pls fill the roads with them ok thumbup.gif

I was thinking of getting the sportage but the K5 looks so tempting now. I like the sportage design n high seating position ( as for all suv) as I travel frequently to penang. High seating position makes for a more comfortable drive on a long journey. Yes?

But the waiting time for the sportage is really really long. Those that book in last year november also not yet get their car and I do wonder if I were to book the car now.. have to wait how long??

K5 design is nice and very well equip for a car in that price range. No point comparing to more expensive models. Is the waiting period of getting the K5 long? Will be visiting nearest showroom to talk to a SA.

i have a 2011 civic currently

my list are :
citroen c4
jetta
optima k5
new camry 2012

currently looking more towards c4 for its built, quality material, look and specs are generous for its price, IMHO.
no offense to K5 kipas-susah-mati fella, i still in love with the look! its a nice and sporty looking car thats for sure!
