James Wan Will Explore Another Home Haunting in The Conjuring

user posted image

James Wan, director of 2011′s surprise hit “Insidious” (made for a meager $1.5 million, the film has grossed $53 million domestically and just south of $76 million worldwide), has signed on to direct another home haunting in “The Conjuring”.

The story is from a pitch by Carey and Chad Hayes, and is “inspired by the supernatural events that happened in the Rhode Island home of the Perron family.”

The article says Wan is a perfect fit for the film, which I take it to mean it’s going to rely mostly on practical effects utilizing a relatively small budget ala “Insidious”.

Peter Safran and Tony DeRosa-Grund are producing.

Worth a watch if you're into supernatural horror, but I dont get why it's rated R.. it isn't really that scary, and i'm not usually someone who revels in these kinds of movies. (read: scared shitless of horror movies)

I don't know.. saw the trailer in the cinema and looks like the kind of thing that has been done countless times. You know...spooky house with evil past and stuff and some ghostbuster-like people are called to investigate. Then this girl's leg got pulled by some spirit and I was like.. hey I've seen that in Paranormal Activity! And then the trailer ends with someone first seeing nothing in front of her, when she looks to the other side and looks back to the front, boom suddenly the ghost appears. You see that in like every single horror trailer.
But since its getting rave reviews and is said to be the biggest opening for an R rated movie ever, I guess there might be some surprises.

Ah... "The Conjuring"... this movie has actually gotten me excited about a couple of weeks ago based on the trailer (the true story side of things) + RT score + IMDB rating + James Wan + I have not seen a good supernatural flick in cinema for ages.

RottenTomatoes:
QUOTE
Extremely well-crafted and gleefully creepy, The Conjuring ratchets up the dread with a series of smartly delivered, terribly effective old-school scares.

James Wan, the "Sarawakian-born movie director" tongue.gif I loved "Insidious", and we have a sequel for that as well. Patrick Wilson seem to be his choice of actor for his movies. James Wan really wants to bring back the 'old-school' style scares and "Insidious" did that brilliantly.

Currently "The Conjuring" holds a terrific 85% on RT and a brilliant 8.1/10 from IMDB which is always difficult. For a "supernatural / horror" type flick to get this kind of reception is more than welcomed.

Looking forward to seeing it, releasing locally August 1. smile.gif

I checked GSC website, there is only 1 show at midnight for July 25 and 26. I think this must be one of those early screenings or something... full release with more showtimes should start for August 1st.

Not sure if they censored anything in Malaysia but it is a darn good movie based on a freaky true story.
One of the better horror films I have watched thus far, highly recommended for horror freaks like me!

Exactly man..

I was really surprised to found out he was the main mastermind for SAW when it was released many years ago. I think he moved to study in Aussie Film Institute during his early 20s.

Not really born and raised up in Aussie since baby.

From the way he communicate, it's already an Australian to me. Not like Ang Lee can still feel the english command belongs to 'asian' standard.

Yeah. He always seem to say that he's born in Malaysia but never really say he's Malaysian.
I don't think many people (ok maybe the older generation) will be that proud if they found out a Malaysian is the mastermind of movies like SAW.
Only when he was given the directors seat to Fast and Furious 7 did everyone started to go "Hey look a Malaysian is directing one of the biggest franchise of our time!".

"Wan was born in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, to Chinese parents, and was raised in Perth, Western Australia, from a young age. Wan was 11 years of age when he first dreamed of making films and his tertiary studies were undertaken at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), where he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree.[1]"

I thought the film is slightly overrated but don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film. It's just that it's very cliched and nothing genuinely fresh about it. Good horror flick, but forgettable nonetheless.

actually if most of the local directors and producers have the budget that James Wan and his team had, the products will definitely better than we had right now. Wan is lucky to be at the right place and the right time.

It has heart and script is good. The part about them at the beach and how it was used to defeat the witch. Plus the acting by Vera is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G

No. Insidious will have its own sequel, Insidious 2.

It was a great movie. The actors, all the way to April, all did a great job. And what do you know, the cinematography works and adds to the horrifying scene, without it, it would've been another American horror.

It didn't need much of CGI's, and it certainly bodes well without it.

It combines most of horror cliches but combines it well and it wasn't just jumpscare galores, like most American horrors.

Certainly one to watch, may wanna watch it again. 8/10, a solid 8 from me.

I guess american horror movies are hit-or-miss with me, didn't find this scary in the slightest bit. Same thing for Insidious. But Insidious was more fun and entertaining, as I recall. Of the more recent american horror movies the only ones I can think of right now that got under my skin are The Ring and The House of the Devil. There are probably more but I can only think of these two. The last 10 minutes of [REC] is still the scariest thing I've ever seen in a horror movie.

And yes, after watched this movie, I have a hard time to sleep. Feel scared cry.gif

It's a good watch. Not a must watch, but a good watch. I didn't really find it "horryfying" or genuinely scary but heck, I'd lie if I said my heart was at a normal rate all the time. Perhaps I was expecting something I hadn't seen before. Most of what is in the movie has already been done on another flick. But here is the thing - - the movie is really well made, got to give props to that. First of all, the acting. Brilliant acting performances from every cast, especially Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. Lily Taylor, have to give special mention to her, she really delivered a genuinely 'troubled' person going through a very traumatic time with her family.

Secondly, the scares are there though not entirely new. I did like it though. They weren't cheesy/cheap scares, I really believe James Wan brought back old school scare methods, including yes, a sudden pop-in your face + horror music cue. tongue.gif Brilliant directed, I noticed great camera work too. The movie is able to keep you glued to the screen from start to finish, and not one scene felt out of place or unnecessary, it all gelled together nicely.

Very well done, but it's been done before.

I would recommend this movie to any paranormal/horror/ghost movie fans out there. You will have a good time. nod.gif Just don't expect sleepless nights or I-would-never-speak-of-this-movie-ever-again type thing.

8/10

Can't wait for "Insidious 2" coming this October. Speaking of this film, I did find the first film wildly entertaining what with Darth Maul and all. laugh.gif There were some really ingenious scare methods used (e.g. the man standing by the baby crib as the camera pans around leisurely... small things like that, really old school scare methods too). I do hope the sequel will be able to give us 'new' scare methods.

You seem to be "one of those" who likes to act tough. I think the movie scared the shit out of you that's why you are reply this way.

Please do your research before replying, it makes you look like an idiot.

It is normal for people to act like this, banning or hating the director after they scared the shit out of them. biggrin.gif

The Conjuring (2013)

I'm in LOVE!!!!

I'm in love with James Wan!!!! laugh.gif tongue.gif

Okay, maybe I'm hyperbole-ing.... biggrin.gif

I am really enjoying his work!

Well, maybe NOT Saw (2004), not a gore fan, but his Insidious and now The Conjuring, has proven that he understand how to capture his audience in suspense!!

Wow.

Supposedly based on true story.

Some things are obviously artistic licensing.... but the end product, impressive.

I'm also in love with Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) and Lili Taylor!! Is that too greedy??? tongue.gif I forgive Lili Taylor for The Haunting (1999). She is a really convincing actress!!

Some character have potential but weren't allowed to shine. And have to add at 2 hours, I can understand why.

It is really hard to comprehend why they would keep all the... supernatural artifacts at they home!! I personally would not! That's just because I'm chicken shit!!! laugh.gif

If you are a fan of horror, go for it!!

i'm just voicing my opinions which i am free to do. don't get me wrong, the actors are all pretty darn good, the only thing bad is the overly boring story and the directing.

for those who are really looking for a scary movie, this is NOT it, even with all the hype around it. probably because i watched a lot of these, and probably after all the scary stuff i've been through childhood, almost nothing is considered scary now.

but if u want to watch some decent acting and not so decent directing and story telling, this is it.

Maybe you're into something like "Evil Dead (2013)" ? Is this your type of horror? I loved the 2013 flick... I have yet to comment about it here though. It didn't make it to our shores, too gruesome. Perhaps you're not into old skool scare methods.

i concur. i tried to like evil dead (2013), but it's just not my type of horror. despite people likening evil dead to drag me to hell, i felt that drag me to hell is much more traditional american horror and which i immediately clicked. it was easy to love drag me to hell despite it's short comings. but evil dead is simply a bit out of touch for me.

conjuring on the other hand is much more refined horror. it didnt use gore, but it did use several jump-scare tactics, some which i have to admit did get to me. and that's saying something, because i've seen a lot of horror flicks. particularly the kain ampaian terbang scene is most memorable. it's worth to watch.

i'm also like you. watched too many horror movies since childhood, till it aint funny anymore. but this movie is not that bad, could have been better. but i wouldn't say its a rubbish movie though.

the best part while watching it in the cinema is to hear the audience getting squeamish and terrified, etc.. laugh.gif

What do you expect. I'm the contrarian around here.

I'll admit there were some mildly spooky parts, but none of it gave me a proper chill. Maybe haunted house movies don't do it for me. The cursed video clip in The Ring (remake) is positively scarier and creepier than the whole of The Conjuring.

Evil Dead (2013) is pure thrash - a movie with no sensibilities at all on how to handle characters or horror. I think it's probably the worst movie I've seen this year.

And I thought the "contrarian" is Mary... (Mary Mary quite contrarily... tongue.gif)

Bad joke, don't have a cow...

I do like The Conjuring.

Like Insidious, the movie making approach is a little "old" fashion, in a sense that the attention is paid into creating suspense...

Right down to paying homage to Alfred Hitchcock

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

A lot of movies especially the rated R one tend to use "sex" to attract attention to itself (Evil Dead anyone, even the original)

Having said that, it seems that James Wan is classy enough not to go that way

I... respect that.

Also, the casting in itself it quite marvelous.

Everyone I feel, brought their A game!!

I'm just having a discussion here, there is no right or wrong. Just want to get my point of view across and please, if you have anything to add, ADD!! laugh.gif

Oh don't get me wrong, I have no problems with James Wan's approach. It is classy. I just don't think the end product managed to scare me. Maybe I'm just a bit different. Most people thought The House of the Devil was boring crap. I thought it was a creepy little throwback flick that made me feel uneasy all over. Now THAT had a terrific mood and atmosphere that crept right under your skin! (Ti West's next movie The Innkeepers was less successful. You could say I had the same reaction to it as The Conjuring)

"Evil Dead (2013)" was a gore fest. It has been a long time since I saw a flick with that much blood and gore. It made me squirm in discomfort. tongue.gif It has the typical horror flick ingredients - the blonde, the geek, the hero, the possessed.. thrown into a cabin and there's no way out. It was meant to be that way. And it was directed by a complete unknown hand picked by Sam Raimi himself. I was surprised. It was very well made.

Going back to "The Conjuring", a sequel is already in place. I wonder if we will see the other Warren cases. There is no need to go back to the Perron family.

Even though there is nothing new about this movie, this is how a haunted house movie should be made.
Great atmosphere, very intense and great acting from the two female leads even though nothing is too scary about this movie if you grown up loving horror movies, western or asian or both.
What makes it more interesting is the layering of the story.
Annabelle the doll, the exorcism that traumatized Lorraine and the Perron story are well put together to make it stand out from the recent haunted house movies, which are just haunted house movies.
Especially, Lorraine's past exorcism experience. It is not only a good character development for Lorraine Warren but it also has the same effect of the implication of the previous encounter of the demon and Father Merrin before Regan possession in 'The Exorcist'. It adds some mysterious element to the movie and makes its audiences like me wonder what Lorraine see in the exorcism that traumatised her. A great movie / prequel idea.
Whether it is a modern classic or not, it is really depends on personal opinion.
I must say it is indeed a very entertaining movie.

Are you ghost movie fan first of all. If not, get 'The Exorcist' released in 1973. brows.gif

For me this movie is something with similar level of horror with 2012's The Possession. I like them both. If you guys love ghost movie mainly on the story line, I'd recommend 'The Rite'. Love it!

I watch the Exorcist when i was 10 yr old out of my dad recomend (that classic) dont find it horror ..is dead boring.
Evil dead (the old one) could be more scarier.
And conjuring had me scream which i never did before rclxm9.gif (the 2 part where they falls into the dark room)

'The Conjuring' is a well made horror film - scary in a fun-house-of-horror pop-corn context.

But it kind of pales in comparison to 'Sinister' from last year in terms of the kind of dread that still stays with you after the movie ends.

Watching it again at home on blu-ray - scary scenes are scary even with the directors commentary turned on.. 'super8' footage + uber-creepy electronica score is really inspired. Didn't expect this from the director of 'the exorcism of emily rose' (entertaining but humdrum, in my opinion).

Some mention of 'exorcist' - i found this more downbeat and depressing than scary - relating to the guilt experienced by the priest and mother - the hospital scenes where Regan is tested with all the scary medical apparatus disturbed me more than the crucifix violation + stabbing segment.

laugh.gif My point exactly!! As I had stated in my previous preview, I really do not understand why they would keep the cursed object in their house....

hohohoho...

came out the hall with a grin

haven't had such a shiok horror movies since.... i can't remember tongue.gif

good old fashion ghost story, giving me multiple goose bumps moments throughout the show

maybe because I have kids similar to the age of those in the movies, hence I get more involved in the emotions of the the characters are going thru
hence a lot more scarier than I thought it can be

a perfect 5/5 for a horror movie

Cool movie, just managed to catch it this week. Cinema is 60% full after so long. Not bad. The scariest part of the movie was when the little girl noticed some ghost behind the door and the expression is classic. Very well acted out.

Evening happy.gif

Reminds me of 'Poltergeist' and 'The Exorcist' (1973)

But better CGI and storyline of course.
Anyway, need to retro 'The Exorcist'; recollect happy.gif

'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' (2005) was good too.

'The Exorcist' (1973) and 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' (2005) were quite disturbing.

Hey...this year 'The Exorcist' (1973) is 40 years old happy.gif

just saw this and this is one good horror/pocession movie. I'm gonna miss James Wan horror now.

I think the one thing everyone read about this movie, is the doll Anabelle. I was expecting the story to revolve around Anabelle. Apart from the start and the part the spirit trying to hurt Ed/Lorraine daughter, i don't see how Anabelle is tied to the Perron's horror. Did I miss something?

I wonder if the producer will continue with another remake of Amityville since the ending of Conjuring refer to "another case at Long Island"?

The Conjuring (2013) Addendum

For my original review, please goto:

The Conjuring Review

What I would like to add is the sound design for this movie.

It is simply, SPECTACULAR!!

I know, I know, many a people is talking about Pacific Rim and The Lone Ranger etc, but for me, this one takes the cake!!

Everything is... WEIGHTED, which really REALLY adds to the movie.

Additionally, the special feature are great. I finally get to hear James Wan speak and it is a surprise.

He sounds... ENGLISH!!! laugh.gif

Joking apart, the special feature also has interviews with the Perron family and Lorraine Warren, so really nice inside to the story/movie!!

So in case I was not clear, I LUV THIS MOVIE!!

My Additional Two Sen.

Finally checked this out after all the fuss about the upcoming Annabel.
Wasn't as scary as I expected. Not even one of the scariest movies I've seen.
The clapping in the dark when the mother was holding a match part would have probably given me a heart attack if it weren't because I knew the clap was coming because that scene was the god damn movie poster. What a spoiler.
I don't know...I've just never been into these possessed type of movies. People getting possessed and running amok and stuff and priest chanting gibberish with a cross and all that. I just think its very tiring to watch. And I did watched The Exorcist, The Shining, Poltergeist a few months ago and also didn't find it scary.

I supposed I'm more into the supernatural with less blood since these are the things that you or someone you know has experienced. Some of my favs are the first Paranormal Activity, Dark Water, Shutter, The Orphanange.

To me what you can't see is the scariest thing. Once you've seen it, it would probably be scary as hell for a few seconds, but not after that.
