Nerds rejoice! There are still terminal fun in N9.
Root is enabled by enabling developers mode.

@Andy214
Looking at this video Nokia did sort of implement what you said earlier. There are advanced functions in N9 but it's turned off by default.Advanced users can turn it on.
Now if only widgets supported....

Suddenly N9 looks extra attractive to me

Thanks a lot for the news. Phew, now I can rejoice laugh.gif
Anyway, this phone surely looks more and more compelling for me to try this. I wonder if the leaked Flash 10 from TI is installable and compatible with this? Since it still using the DEB packaging. Just a question tho...

For Vanilla Meego .rpm apps, I'm sure that it can be converted to .deb via Alien. So no problem there. And I really hope that Preenv is going to be ported, so that we can have some gaming goodness (Although I can be perfectly contented wif emulators laugh.gif)

Now whats left is some demo for Alien Dalvik, and my life will complete. I don't really care about the social network thingy cause N9 already integrate it well enough into the OS.

So where does ecosystem stands now? hmm.gif

p/s: I sometimes wonder, why no one tries to integrate Android into Maemo ala what Easy Debian has done? Just curious...

If we can install Android apps, why do we still need Preenv? biggrin.gif

As I watched more and more video, I started to wonder.

Where is the bookmark manager for the browser? Don't tell me I have to put all my bookmarks as apps?

Although I do saw Mozilla Fennec icon in one of the videos...

Base on most of the video this n9 suppose to be a final release product or very close to.... unlike the n8 out already still bloody buggie....

but then why they still need at least half a year only able to ship the device?

Maemo probably has one of the best open source community. They provided updates & apps when Nokia abandoned this phone.Lot's of people still interested with MeeGo but I don't know how long they can can put up with Nokia's shenanigans.Very bad support for Maemo/MeeGo devices.

Among all the videos I watched I think the last video was the most important for me laugh.gif

Leaked flash files might need some tweaking for it to work perfectly.I patched the leaked flash 10 for N900 & it doesn't work that smoothly sad.gif

If Alien Dalvik really provide complete Android apps integration in MeeGo then I don't think we need preenv.Anyway I don't think MeeGo have same framework as webOS.preenv won't work if it's like that.

Social network integration has always been highlight with Maemo devices.Although some of the manufacturers making lots of huha's regarding how they integrating social betwork on their devices,Nokia did it 1st in 2009 with Maemo5.Skype,IM & facebook were very well integrated in Maemo 5.

There reason why no one bother to integrate Android in Maemo is probably because someone else managed to port the entire Android to work as proper OS in N900 laugh.gif

I genuinely believe if Nokia provided any kind of future software support they can sell this device.

Really?
From what I read from bunch of sites no one have complain regarding the OS stability. So far no demo model OS crashed (like the N8 in Engadget preview) & all the features are pretty much included & working.
N8 on the other hand was plagued by bugs even from the early days.

So why the delay if you don't have much issue with this device?
The faster they ship this device the faster Elop can play with his blocky phone.

I sure hope Nokia starts shipping their products soon.

Yes,Android is the largest mobile open source community. But from what I've seen majority of the community are just regular end users want to have fun flashing & looking to update their OS.

But for Maemo majority of users always contribute for the OS.
It could be as small as testing beta app to enhancing the kernel.
Another thing about Maemo community is they are very organized.Lets say one function is missing. The project leader will look for other users to develop it.Once the team done with it they'll ask others to beta test it.Then it'll be integrated in CSSU (Community Updates for the OS) or if hardware related in kernel.
I like this organized working part a lot.Eventhough there multiple projects going on but when it comes to integrating it to OS everyone play nice.
With Android device you don't visibly see what was updated by the 3rd party team but in Maemo you can see it.Just take a N900 running stock PR 1.2 another N900 running modified kernel & updated OS.There are lot's of differences.

I'm not saying Android community is anything lesser. They do have good projects going on like Cyanogenmod.

MS will sue your pants off if they know you have their source codes.

It's backed by the big 'G' and the progress is fast unlike other OS.

Plus, after Nokia abandon ship on Maemo many have jump to Android, including those "professionals".

Don't get me wrong, I didn't say it was unstable, just its a pre-release version, unfinalized one. Maybe they would do some TWEAKING like add more features (which I think they wont) b4 the big launch D:
