Dear all, we brought a poodle walking aimless around our taman last two days. He looks very dirty. We're not sure if he has an owner. When we brought him to the pet shop nearby, the owner of the petshop said he might been out there for a few days, because he has fleas all over his body. Maybe he came together with a pack of dogs, and don't know the way back, is it possible for a dog not knowing his house back? By the way, according to the owner from the petshop, he is around 1 year old.

How to know if that poodle has owner or not? We drive around taman area to see if any leaflet out there, but none to be found. If there still no one finding for him, we're keeping.

This dog seems energetic. Please give me some tips to:
1. calm the dog down.
2. remain calm when i bring him out for walk. He keeps sniffing, peeing, and walking aimlessly (i read from many websites, this is not correct). By the way, he must be on leash at all time, I still can't manage to communicate with him yet.
3. how to commmunicate with him.

I really need some tips desperately. Is it necessary for us to go for a training class? Thank you so much.

Hi... Maybe you can go through petfinder or put up notice on petfinder to look for the owner? On your concern:-
1) Poodle are energetic. Maybe you can walk him more often to make him tired which naturally calm him down. Get him a rawhide (cowskin bone) to chew.
2) He is marking territory, not peeing. When he is on leash, choke him(quickly pull and release like fishing) and reprimand him by shouting 'NO' whenever he is sniffing, marking or walking aimlessly. He will know that behaviour is wrong eventually. It takes up to many weeks to train but you will see them toning down on such behaviour. Just continue to reprimand him. Try to bring him to a tree where he can sniff and pee as he likes. That is to build his habit to let off the pee in him only near the tree.
3) A little training will help. Get some small treats and reward bit by bit when he did the right thing. Jerhigh of any flavour is the easiest to get treat. Communication basic: Sit(push his butt down with your hand and say sit), Stay(show him your palm and say stay, whenever he move you say no), Wee Wee (Pee), Poo Poo (Poop). If you need more ways of training him, go google it out. Goodluck mate. Share his photo with us.

P/s: My messi don't pee at tree yet... Cause I seldom walk him... tongue.gif

Thank you so so much. I'm trying to get acquaintace with him. Walking him is a bit hard, he is quite stubborn at times that when i pull the leash when he starts sniffing or walking aimlessly, he'll have wars with me, looking at me and start barking. Training him to stay calm is a bit of hard work.

Petshop owner said that the owner might left him because there are many fleas. Anyway, I'll go around the neighborhood with the dog see where he stays.

Do you think following him will find his owner? notworthy.gif

I am not sure about this. Have you start treating his flea problem? Maybe you should bring him to the vet and seek advice. If owner want to leave him, they would leave him to another taman right? When you first train is definitely hard, once you get the trick, it would be easier.

Well, I'm staying at Puncak Jalil, basically there are many tamans around. I've brought him on leash and go round the whole taman these few days, but no sign from either him or anybody around here.

Yea, i brought him to the petshop for grooming and bathe. The petshop owner give him injection, she said it's for the fleas, beacuse his body has too many fleas. We have to bring him again next few days, to wash the fleas away.

I'm getting frustrated of his barking. He'll only quiet when we scolded him real loud. Too bad, my cat and him can't get along well. One have to stay outdoor and one have to stay indoor. By the way, this dog has a kind of dog smell, is there anyway to get rid of that smell? notworthy.gif

Thank u

Dear Ladies and gentleman, need help here! This poodle have been with me for 6 days now. He is an adult poodle. How should I stop him from barking at other dogs or even cats when we're having a walk? Even tho' i've shouted at him, with a firm no, but he doesn't even care. Helpless... Your kind advice is very much being appreciated. smile.gif

You should watch Dogs Whisperer , u will learn how to do it while walking a dog

Basically you have to be relax while walking ur dog
And when to hold firm and let loose of the leash

If you are holding the leash too firm on ur dog all the time
It makes the dog very tense up and thats when they will be aggresive

Thank you so very much! It's a GREAT help! smile.gif

Dear all, my poodle seems like very aware of our presence. He'll see where we're going, even we're just around the living room, he'll purposely wakeup from his sleep and follow us. And also, he doesn't really like kibbles, he'll only eat a few if we sit beside him watching him eat. If we just put the bowl there, he won't touch it, and just follow us around. Is it normal? Any recommended and tasty kibbles?

My poodles likes to follow me everywhere too . About the eating part , I'll cage them during their meal time and will only let them out when they had finished their meal. Maybe u can try this ? After sometimes, eventually he will understand that "finish his kibbles = free from cage".
*
Oh ya, good idea. I never cage him before. He doesn't even like his play pen. Once i close the play pen, he'll bark non stop. I try to stay out, and he stays inside. He demands 24 hours supervision. Even at night, he sleeps at the staircase (dare not climb up, but i bet one day he will). Kesian him when we're going out, he'll use his sad puppy eyes.

Cute fella! He's a picky eater? What does he choose to eat mostly?
*
Thank you smile.gif

Yea... He only eats new stuff. That's why i have to change frequently. It's like eating the same kibble everyday, he'll get bored and stop eating, or eat only a few mouth. If i change a new brand, then he'll straight away eat everything. rclxub.gif At first, he was taking nutriedge, then he started to eat a few mouth, then i get a sample of ANF and see if he likes it. Well, the first week of sample is ok, then i thought, maybe he likes this. Then i buy a big bag of ANF because there's an offer. After 2, 3 weeks, he started to avoid again. Now i'm using Nutram for him because of his skin allergy.

Do you have this problem? hmm.gif

No problem to have treat to teach them. If the dog are food driven, then by all mean, train them by using treats.

Sometimes he only comes to me when i have treat in my hand. But the fact is, i don't always have treats in my hand. When ask him to come, he'll just lay there, or do his stuff... Like a prince.
