 read a book like this before?, help identifying an old book

hi guys, many many years ago i've read a book that has a character like this.
The protagonist came across a guy during his life. The guy buys himself a bond(or insurance) that gives him money monthly till he dies or reaches an age (whichever comes first). Then he plans his death.

I remember a literature book like that, the hermit if i recall correctly. He planned to kill himself when the money ran out right.

still googling, but "the hermit and the wild woman" doesnt look like it. doesnt look like what a child would be interested in reading at all

Well, the story is kind of similar to "The Lotus Eater". I read it during English literature class when I was in Form 4 or 5. smile.gif
