Ex-Red endorses de Gea buy

QUOTE
Reds goalkeeping legend Alex Stepney has endorsed the signing of David de Gea from Atletico Madrid.

The hugely promising Spain Under-21 keeper was the man identified by Sir Alex Ferguson as the best option for the position after exhaustive scouting around the world.

With Edwin van der Sar retiring, the new arrival seems likely to be handed the number one shirt and Stepney feels he will soon pick up the language in Manchester.

"He's done very well for Atletico," Stepney told ManUtd.com. "His record last season (24 clean sheets in 45 games) is incredible in a top-class league. I've only seen him on TV and you can't tell everything about a player on TV.

"For example, I always like to see what a goalkeeper's doing position-wise when the ball's down the other end of the pitch and the cameras rarely show that. But certainly I've seen what a good shot-stopper he is and it would seem that he's going to be Sir Alex's number one.

"We've also still got Anders Lindegaard, Ben Amos and Tomasz Kuszczak on the books, of course, and one of them will have to leave, either on loan or permanently. A club like Manchester United has to have three top-class goalkeepers because if your number one gets injured, you need quality cover in the team and on the bench."

1968 European Cup final star Stepney expects the keeper to quickly adapt to his new surroundings in plenty of time for the big kick-off in August.

"It doesn't take long for players to settle in at Carrington, even if they don't speak English," he explained. "United is so geared up to help them in and learn the language if necessary so all parties, the player and the club, can get the maximum benefit from the deal."

Sir Alex confirmed his decision to plump for de Gea at Gary Neville's testimonial last month and the deal has been done in time for the 20-year-old to bed in with his new team-mates during the close season.

Rio welcomes new keeper

QUOTE
Rio Ferdinand has expressed his enthusiasm for the signing of Atletico Madrid keeper David de Gea.

The Reds defender has used his Twitter page to offer his support for the man who is set to play behind him next season following Edwin van der Sar's retirement.

The 20 year-old Spaniard's style has already caught the eye of the United centre-back.

Ferdinand tweeted today, "David de Gea welcome bro! Another quality young player signed, Manchester United have had a nice bit of movement in this transfer window.

"De Gea has got nice feet too.

"I love that in a keeper...sweeper."

Edwin set to join Asia tour

QUOTE
United’s Asia Trophy Tour moves into its third and final week on Monday, when one of the team’s former stars will be joining the party in the Far East.

Recently retired goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is flying out to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia on Tuesday 5 July and Singapore on Wednesday 6 July.

Like Ji-sung Park, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand before him, Edwin will be appearing at exclusive events hosted by club partners, this time TM and Hublot.

He'll also be meeting many fans along the way, and the Barclays Premier League trophy will again be available for photos at iconic locations in both cities.

Edwin was due to be accompanied by fellow Reds legend Andrew Cole, but the Treble-winning striker has been forced to pull out for family reasons.

ManUtd.com will have more details of the events in both locations soon.

Ferdinand and the tour party were in Bangkok on Friday and there are more events planned with the trophy in the Thai capital for Saturday – read the itinerary to find out more.

United accept Posh bid

QUOTE
Manchester United have accepted a bid from Peterborough for young forward Nicky Ajose, skysports.com understands.

The 19-year-old was a stand-out performer whilst on loan at Bury last season and player a major role in their promotion to League One.

A host of clubs have since made contact with United about the prospect of taking him on loan next season.

There has also been interest in signing him on a permanent basis and now Peterborough have made their move.

Darren Ferguson has made contact with his father Sir Alex and has thrashed out a deal believed to be worth an initial £300,000.

Ajose will now hold talks with the London Road outfit, who will look to finalise a quick deal as other clubs could yet make rival offers.

If the Ajose deal is finalised, he will be the third United player to move to Peterborough in the space of a week as they have already struck loan deals for Ryan Tunnicliffe and Scott Wootton.

Meulensteen liking Sneijder

QUOTE
Manchester United's assistant manager Rene Meulensteen claims that he could not think of a 'more ideal player' for the team than Wesley Sneijder.

The Red Devils are keen on bolstering their midfield options this summer following the retirement of former England international Paul Scholes following a glittering Old Trafford career.

Arsenal's Samir Nasri is reportedly on the club's radar although rivals Chelsea and Manchester City are also keeping tabs on the France international playmaker.

Question marks over Sneijder's future have surfaced this summer despite the fact the Holland international still has four years left to run on his Inter Milan contract.

Whether Inter are open to the possibility of cashing in remains to be seen, but Meulensteen is in no doubt the gifted midfielder would be the perfect signing for United.

Perfect fit

"The new Paul Scholes doesn't exist, just as a new Roy Keane has never emerged, but Sneijder would fit perfectly here," Meulensteen told Dutch magazine Voetbal International.

"I cannot actually think of a more ideal player for our team.

"I say this not because he's a Dutchman. I've worked here for a while, I know the team inside out and I know he would be a great signing.

"He seems a perfect complement to the likes of (Javier) Hernandez, (Wayne) Rooney, Park (Ji-sung), (Ashley) Young, (Antonio) Valencia, Nani and (Ryan) Giggs.

"And, of course, Wesley has the necessary experience in top-level football.

"I don't know what his future is at Inter, whether he may leave or whether he's affordable. But, purely based on football skills, I say get Sneijder."

Van der Sar backing De Gea

QUOTE
Edwin van der Sar is confident his successor David de Gea can handle the demands of being Manchester United's No.1 goalkeeper.

The veteran Dutchman retired at the end of last season, leaving United boss Sir Alex Ferguson with a huge task in attempting to avoid the problems created when legendary keeper Peter Schmeichel departed in 1999.

In the end, Ferguson plumped for De Gea, who may only be 20 but has already confirmed his status as one of the world's top keepers.

De Gea was part of the Atletico Madrid side that defeated Fulham in the 2010 UEFA Europa League final and also helped Spain secure the European Under-21 Championship last month.

And, on a United promotional tour of the Far East, the 40-year-old explained why he thinks De Gea will be a success.

"They (United) scouted all over Europe and found a couple of targets and they chose de Gea," he told ESPN Star.

"Hopefully he's going to have a great career at Manchester United.

"He's very talented. He's already won a trophy with Atletico Madrid and the Spain Under-21 team so the prospect of him doing well is there.

"Everybody has to be his own person but I've met him. I've spoken to him and it looks to me as though he can handle it."

Wes explains Sunderland move

QUOTE
Sunderland new boy Wes Brown has admitted he is looking forward to regular first-team football after only making sporadic appearances for United last season.

The popular defender spent 15 years as a professional at Old Trafford but made only four Premier League starts during the 2010/2011 title-winning campaign and, at 31, was happy to accept the offer of a move to the North East.

Former Reds skipper Steve Bruce was a factor in convincing Brown to join and the ex-England international is keen make an impact on Wearside after completing his switch for an undisclosed fee on Thursday.

After signing a four-year contract with his new club, Brown told SAFC TV: "It's been alright [making the decision] maybe because I'm older.

"It was disappointing not to have played as much as I could at Manchester United over the last couple of seasons so just to know that I'll be back in, playing, I'm focusing on that really and looking forward to it.

"Last season, I couldn't get into the team and that was frustrating but that's football and you move on.

"Sunderland is a big club and Steve Bruce was a big factor coming into it. That's what it came down to really. When I was younger, I used to watch Steve and I've known him a bit as well so it was fine.

"I know a couple of lads who have been here and they say it's a wonderful club and I thought this was the place for me to come."

Bruce expressed his delight in an interview with the Black Cats' official website as he continues to reshape his squad this summer.

"We are delighted to welcome a player of Wes' ability, experience and character to the club," said the former Reds captain.

"He has been a fantastic professional for Manchester United through the years and not only will he strengthen our defensive options, he will also bring with him a winning mentality and level of maturity which can only be positive for the players around him."

QUOTE(pyroboy1911 @ Jul 9 2011, 12:10 PM)
Just for the sake of discussion, for those who thinks Sneijder might find it hard to adapt to English football...dont forget English football suits dutch best. We have great Dutchs like RVN and VDS. other teams? Look at bergkamp, van persie. VDV instant shine when transfer to Tott. Kuyt as well. Plus players like Robben, Marc Overmars, even Ruud Gullit. Just like how brazilians can mix into Spanish football, Dutch seems to have not much problem blending into English football.

PS: my point here isnt about who we should sign. my point here is, I love Dutch footballers in English football tongue.gif
*
But if Uncle Glazer stick by his new policy of not signing players with no resell value then cant see us getting the Dutchman since there will be not much chance of us to recoup back the rumoured 35mil fee.

Nani sad to see duo leave

QUOTE
Nani has expressed his regret at seeing team-mates Wes Brown and John O'Shea depart for Sunderland.

The winger admits the loyal club servants played an important part in helping him settle in Manchester but fears Brown will not have a second thought about tackling him hard when the two meet in the Premier League.

"I think Wes has had a brilliant career in United," Nani told MUTV. "He was a very important player for United and is a fantastic professional and a good friend.

"He helped the young lads a lot and was always ready to play with the team-mates. He's a very friendly player and was very close to me as well. I enjoyed my time I played with him."

When asked whether the defender will kick him next term, he replied: "100 percent! He kicked me of course in training. This is the way he played and why he's been a fantastic player."

Nani is also sad to see O'Shea leave after the Irishman also completed a move to the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract.

"I've enjoyed playing with a lot of players and thse two players were very good for me as well because of the experience they've got," he added. "They helped me a lot as well and I do the parties and go out with them and enjoy the life outside the football.

"They are very good people and I hope they do well and keep doing their best at Sunderland."

Provisional tour squad named

United will take a 21-man squad to the United States on Monday with six other players set to join the pre-season tour at a later date.

Summer signing Ashley Young will fly out in the initial squad, but other new acquisitions David de Gea and Phil Jones will link up later due to their extended seasons with Spain and England respectively at the recent Under-21 European Championships. The trio have all had their squad numbers confirmed for the new 2011/12 season - de Gea will wear 1, Jones will be 4 and Young succeeds Paul Scholes in the number 18 shirt.

The Tour 2011 squad is provisional, subject to change in the event of training injuries:

Goalkeepers: Anders Lindegaard, Ben Amos, Sam Johnstone
Defenders: Rafael, Fabio, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand
Midfielders: Michael Carrick, Nani, Anderson, Ryan Giggs, Ji-sung Park, Gabriel Obertan
Forwards: Mame Biram Diouf, Federico Macheda, Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Dimitar Berbatov, Ashley Young.

The following players will join the tour after their agreed leave time: Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley, David de Gea, Phil Jones, Javier Hernandez.

United will play five matches in the US, starting with New England Revolution in Boston on Wednesday night, 13 July. Every match will be shown live on MUTV and MUTV Online, and ManUtd.com reporters Nick Coppack and Gemma Thompson will be blogging throughout each day from their arrival in the States on Monday evening UK time.

Darren Fletcher to miss Manchester United's US tour

QUOTE
Darren Fletcher will miss Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States.

The Scotland captain was sidelined for nearly all United's Premier League title run-in after being struck down by a virus which triggered significant weight loss.

Although Sir Alex Ferguson spoke optimistically about Fletcher's chances of making his squad for the Champions League final, eventually he failed even to make the bench for the 3-1 defeat by Barcelona - his second final heartbreak after he missed the 2009 showpiece between the same two teams due to suspension.

It was envisaged Fletcher would have fully recovered during the summer and he would be on Monday's flight across the Atlantic.

However, when United confirmed their travelling party on Saturday afternoon, Fletcher was not in it.

Instead the 26-year-old will remain in Manchester, spared the accumulation of travelling time to spend the next three weeks trying to get himself right for the new campaign.

If all goes well, Fletcher could be involved in Paul Scholes' testimonial against New York Cosmos on August 5, or the Community Shield showdown against Manchester City two days later.

But Fletcher knows if he fails to play a significant amount over the course of those two games, the chances of him being involved in the Premier League season opener at West Brom will be slim.

A United spokeswoman said: "Darren will remain at Carrington to undergo an individualised conditioning programme given he missed a large proportion of last season.

"This will help him catch up fitness-wise to the levels of the rest of the team.

"We tried to accelerate things but we want to give him the best opportunity to be fully fit for the new season. We feel a reduction in the amount of time Darren spends travelling will help him achieve this."

With Fletcher missing, Ferguson will take an initial squad of 21 with him on Monday.

Of his new signings, only England international Ashley Young will be on board, having taken the number 18 shirt vacated by newly-retired Paul Scholes.

David de Gea and Phil Jones, who will wear one and four respectively, have both been given an extended break and will join later in the tour along with Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling, who signed a new five-year contract on Friday.

Of his experienced players, Darron Gibson and Tomasz Kuszczak miss out, the clearest hint yet that neither has a United future.

None of the Reds' Youth Cup-winning squad make the journey but Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf will be there after spending last season on loan, whilst Nani and Dimitar Berbatov will also be involved despite speculation linking them to summer moves away from Old Trafford.

United open their tour against New England Revolution in Boston on Wednesday before heading to Seattle, Chicago, New Jersey and Washington.

Manchester United face losing last season's revelation Javier Hernandez to Real Madrid, according to Gus Poyet.
The Spaniards have been linked with the striker, and former Chelsea and Spurs star Poyet, currently covering the Copa America as a pundit, can foresee the Mexican ending up at the Bernabeu, despite the prospect of a new contract at Old Trafford.
'I respect United,' said the Brighton manager, 'but there are much bigger teams, including Real Madrid.
'Due to their history they are bigger than United. I don't think it would be a surprise for Chicharito to go to Real.'

I think if SAF sign both players this transfer window, that will blow the transfer budget already. If SAF wants to sign both players, I think he will get Sneijder first and sign Nasri next season on a free transfer. IMO la.

With the retirement/leaving of few aging players, I don't think we will need too many further changes (if any at all) after this summer so maybe we can carry forward the January 2012 budget in advance? laugh.gif

Sir Alex's midfielder hunt

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson is confident United will cope with the loss of Paul Scholes, either by spending in the transfer market or promoting a young talent from within.

Although Scholes is essentially irreplaceable, the boss is convinced he'll come up with the answers as he prepares to get the pre-season campaign underway in the United States.

Having ruled out the prospect of Arsenal's Samir Nasri coming to Old Trafford, much of the speculation in recent days has focused on Wesley Sneijder of Inter Milan with Chelsea bidding for Spurs playmaker Luka Modric.

While keeping his cards close to his chest, Sir Alex outlined his thoughts in detail at a press conference in Boston.

"We try to look ahead, we try to make sure we have an influx of young players coming through to replace the older players," he explained.  "It's obvious that for the last few years we've been well aware of the need to replace Ryan Giggs. We're fortunate he's managed to carry on and still perform the way he does. And with Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Edwin van der Sar leaving, we were well aware that we were going to have to replace them at some point.

"So the work we've done in the last few years has been centred around that and trying to make sure we still have the quality in the squad to carry on the success. The big problem, of course, is how do you replace somebody like Paul Scholes? It's very, very difficult.

"If you bracket four of the best midfield players in the world, Scholes would be there along with Xavi and [Andres] Iniesta and then you take your pick from a few others. In my mind, he's certainly one of the top four players in the world. It's a loss.

"How will we overcome it? Maybe the next few weeks will help us in that respect. As they often do at Manchester United, maybe somebody will emerge out of the youth team or one of the young players emerges, and then we carry on.

"[Is the spending over?] It would be impossible to get another Paul Scholes, but if we can get a player along similiar lines in terms of the quality of his passing and vision, then yes, we'd have to do something."

United have Tom Cleverley, Matty James and Danny Drinkwater back in the fold after loan stints last season while the FA Youth Cup-winning midfield trio of Ravel Morrison, Paul Pogba and Ryan Tunnicliffe, who has been farmed out to Peterborough, are all highly regarded at the club.

Owen eager for more chances

QUOTE
Michael Owen admits he is eager to earn regular opportunities in the United first-team after signing a new contract in the summer.

The former Real Madrid striker (pictured speaking to Nick Coppack) bagged the final goal of the successful Premier League season, against Blackpool, but started only one game in the division all campaign.

Although he has no complaints about being part of the best team in the country, Owen is understandably determined to prove he can have a bigger impact next term.

The tour matches in the United States should afford him the opportunity to press his claims, even if Sir Alex will have up to eight forwards to choose from later on the trip.

"You want the best of every world as a footballer and I’m no different," he exclusively told Nick for ManUtd.com on the flight out to America.

"You want to be playing at the best club – I’m at that – and you want to be training with the best players and under the best manager and I’m certainly doing that. You want to play at the best stadiums and in big games and obviously it’s near to where I live. So there are lots of positives.

"The only slight negative is the amount I played last season. The first season was great and had some great moments – scoring in the cup final and the goal against Manchester City, hat-trick in Wolfsburg.

"Last year wasn’t quite so good, but the manager has spoken to me and said I’ll be firmly in his plans this season and he expects me to play a lot more.

"The option is there to go to a lesser club and play more often but I’d prefer to play in a top team with all the things that come with it."

Evans happy to scrap for place

QUOTE
Jonny Evans accepts that competition for places goes with the territory at Old Trafford.

The Northern Ireland defender has seen Phil Jones arrive from Blackburn over the summer to increase the already intense battle for a centre-back slot but the departure of Wes Brown and John O'Shea could lead to him being a regular contender for a full-back berth.

Often deployed in a wider slot for his country, Evans performed well at left-back in the crunch clash with Chelsea after coming on as substitute and clearly gives Sir Alex plenty of options in defence.

"I have always thought that being at a club like Manchester United, if you can't accept the challenge of someone wanting your spot, you don't deserve to be here," reasoned the 23-year-old at a Special Olympics event in Boston.

"It's down to you, whether you are good enough, or whether you are putting the effort in to play for the first team."

United kick off the tour with a match against New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday with Evans hoping to be involved.
