From: Is it here or there liao?

My 4Mb line got painfully slow recently, and I called TM to screwed them big time. Mind you, I have called them in the past for slow speed, lucky for me, every time problem got solved, although not exactly easy and fast.

Back to my problem of slow speed, after I screw them, they reset something, I got the speed back. But to my surprise, it got slow again very fast. So I done some investigation, and when I check my router, on the connected client list, I discovered there are 7 unauthorized devises connected to my wifi network. I proceed with blocking all the unauthorized Mac address, and my internet back to blazing fast speed.

The point I try to make is, before we go all out blaming TM, we should check is there any problem at our end. I am embarrassed to said that, there was 1 time I complained to TM, but when they send their technician to my place to check, it is actually my router broken down.

Do bear in mind this, connection slow, either browsing or torrenting, sometime it is depending on the other side/seeder, and it has nothing do with TM.

TM/Streamyx has such bad reputation that we automatically assume the worst about them. rolleyes.gif

I'm sorry, but I will have to interrupt you guys..

First, I will state the connection I had in Australia. I had ADSL 2+ as well... I had a SNR of 6dB +/- that allows me to connect at 18-22 mbits to the servers which was considered very good. With that, I got about 300-500kb/sec download speed often via torrents, with the few rare moments where I got 800kb/sec - 1mb/sec.. the only time I saw speeds of 1mb/sec or more was when I was downloading from an Australian file server..

Not to mention ADSL 2+ you're limited to 1mbit upload.. so you can't seed for nuts, leaving those private tracker sites which requires you to have a good upload ratio out of the question..

Secondly, vanchrian, what ISP were you using in Australia? Most ISP shapes your connection to 128kbits or 256kbits after you pass your quota.. meaning 10-20kbytes/sec download speed..

Thirdly, I have no comment about your friend's fiber connection, but my UniFi VIP10 hits 1.2mbytes often when downloading via torrents.. often and stable.. after being impressed with that speed, I upped my package to VIP20 and now am able to do 2.4mbytes..

WoW!!! your connection looks good, can get so good speed in torrent. I never use torrent... don't know how to setup.. I only use file-host sharing service nowadays. I think file host service is not that expensive nowadays.. US50+ for one yr.
The only problem is to find out which one your isp is not blocking and do not have file delete frequently.

Does unifi have usage cap per month and it is only available in KL area, right?

One note though, this applies to both UniFi and Streamyx.

Connection will be slow towards the end of the month. This always seems to be the case...

I am just assuming we, as a country, or TM, as a company, has their own bandwidth quota for the month. Once the quota is nearly reaching or have reached, nationwide it'll slow down..

I always notice the first few weeks of the month, the net is much smoother and quicker than the last few weeks of the month.

Yeah, TPG is really cheap. They have ADSL 2+ Unlimited at AUD 59.99.. but I heard their speed is not reliable as well as ping is quite high. I was with Adam Internet while I was in Adelaide.

There is something I really don't get. Why is it that Speedtest.net keeps reporting that my downloads are about 500+- kbps, and yet my actual download speeds don't go above 50kbps?

What could possibly cause this? Is speedtest.net not reliable? Should I call up TMNet to ask them what's going on?

Edit:
Speedtest.net reports that my average download rate is 500kbps.

My actual max download rate that I'm seeing on this file I'm downloading from youtube is 30kbps.

With a VPN, its 10kbps.

Something is seriously wrong here. What the hell is going on?
