Higher air pressure in tyres reduce contact / subsequent friction with road surface & therefore lower rolling resistance...requiring less power to move the car, thus saving fuel!

However, too high pressures or overly inflated tyres will reduce too much contact (friction) with road, thus affecting roadholding (grip).
