I think it's pretty retarded to judge anime quality by TV ratings in Japan.

Historically most midnight anime don't even go over 5% due to the air times. Even Madoka's final episode didn't get over 2.3% in Kansai area during the first airing (Kanto was the next day...) and look at how much that sold.

So seeing the figures for GC and BRS... sure it's low, but it's not out of the normal range.

Really, going over 2% for midnight anime is considered satisfactory.

tl;dr: judging on anime quality based on japanese tv ratings is f***ing retarded

Midnight anime are for fan service anime, usually. Mature rated stuffs. But the problems go back to the anime itself, if you didn't go for fan service, go for story.

Haha. No.

Aquarion Evol - Monday 1:35am
Ano Natsu de Matteru - Tuesday 1:30am
Natsume Yuujinchou Shi - Tuesday 1:30am
Another - Tuesday 1:35am
Daily Lives of High School Boys - Tuesday 2am
Chihayafuru - Wednesday 1am
PapaKiki - Wednesday 1:30 am
BRS TV - Friday 12:45am
Guilty Crown - Friday 1:15am
Baby Please Kill Me - Friday 1:25am
Persona 4 - Friday 1:30am
Amagami SS Plus - Friday 1:55am
Inu x Boku - Friday 2am
Highschool DXD - Friday 11am
Senhime Zessho Symphogear - Friday 11pm
Shakugan no Shana - Saturday 1:30am
Last Exile 2 - Saturday 2am
Area no Kishi - Saturday 6am

Nisemonogatari - Sunday 12am
Moretsu Pirates - Sunday 12:30am
Brave10 - Sunday 2am
Rinne no Lagrange - Sunday 10pm
Mirai Nikki - Sunday 11pm

So how many of the shows above can be categorized as Mature-rated fanservice shows? Notice how the two worst offenders are airing at mornings?

Also it's extremely f***ing sad if your two criteria for watching an anime are story or fanservice.

True. But it kinda helps us guess on whether or not it's getting another season, no?
*
Haha, no. That's like saying that the more downloads the fansubs of the series gets, the more likelier that the show will be a success.

Production committees would rather use sales figures to judge that.

If you REALLY want to support the anime you like, buy the f***ing blu-rays, not download better quality fansubs.

And then you went back for watching anime for the arts sake?

I'll admit, I'm not watching anime much for fanservice nowadays.

For story, my picks would be Another and Symphogear, mainly because Another is a rare horror anime that's gotten pretty competent. Symphogear meanwhile has a really intriguing story going along with it.

I'm frankly just watching Natsume Yuujinchou Shi for the heck of it, since i've already watched the first three seasons and even if the stories are getting repetitive, it's always fun to see what new yokai gets introduced. Same with Last Exile 2 as well... even though the story is all over the place.

Most of the rest, I really watch for the character drama. Ano Natsu, Aquarion Evol, Moretsu, Rinne, Chihayafuru and Nisemonogatari are great examples for nice character drama even though I can pretty much predict how the story is going to be like. Good production values from the shows I mentioned also help.

I mean after over 5 years of anime watching as my main source of entertainment, I can say I've seen quite a bit of the same, but hey I still haven't gotten bored of it yet. There's always some aspect or another in shows that keeps me coming back. I've found out that just choosing anime based on fanservice or story will really make you miss out on a lot of interesting gems if you don't try to even watch them. Comedy anime are a great example, for instance.

You're the wrong one here, those show you listed are generally heavy and aimed at mature audience.
...what? Than all that left is just animation and audio, please don't tell me those were the reason why you watched an anime.
*
They aren't so much aimed at "mature audience" than at the "otaku crowd". Of course i only listed a selected number of shows because the real market of anime in Japan is towards kids and young teenagers. Are you going to tell me a comedy anime like Daily Lives of High School Boys or Baby Please Kill Me is only for 18+ audiences?

As for the reason I watch anime, generally it's because I love the medium truly to try most of them before even generalizing them as shit. Even "fanservice" anime can turn out to be surprisingly good at times in other aspects. Just because the "majority" doesn't think it's shit does not mean that I think it's bad.

I have many potential reasons to love a show. Maybe my favourite seiyuus are it. Maybe the character drama is engaging. Maybe the writer is good. Maybe the director is good. Or even maybe because my favourite composer is doing the sound track for it. Heck, for GC, sure it's a f***ing trainwreck, but I still can "love" it if only for the fan reactions to it.

There's an objective value and subjective value to everything. If you are going to judge everything by an objective value, I truly pity for your future.

The only answer is no, or more precisely there is no correct answer for that question.
Just like every other form of entertainment, anime is highly subjective both in medium and the content itself.
Because of this subjective nature, each individuals hold their own opinions and thus, this 'reason' is pretty much different from each and every person.

When you said that the real market is kids and teenagers, I know that you're just pulling this out of your thin air using your own perspectives. Again, you are completely wrong in this matter.
I'm sorry, but what?
*
Lol, if you're gonna deny it without giving me something concrete to justify that I'm wrong then please don't even start. Anime in Japan can be said as the same as cartoons for Western audiences. You can compare the figures for a shounen manga vs a seinen manga and you'll quickly see the reason why the "Big Three" last so damn long in Japan. Even for anime home video sales, why do you think they can produce over 300 episodes of One Piece and over 200 episodes of Gintama non-stop? It's because there's enough people buying the media to justify it.

Well, maybe One Piece isn't going to be a good example since it's been running so long, most of the kids who grew up reading it are already working adults (I know I am one). There are other kid focused anime series that do qualify, like say Digimon, that yo-yo show, and even Shin-chan too. Hell, even Gundam is going this route with Gundam AGE.

Finally, for the objective and subjective value... please do your own thinking and try to look up what those two words mean. Here let me give you an example to kick you off:

Objective - TV ratings, Sales figures, production budgets
Subjective - Fan reactions, Review ratings. Your own personal feelings about a show.

I hope that will be illuminating enough for you, because I don't intend to spare more words for you if you are going to be deflecting me with ad hominems.

Again and again, you are wrong.
Right now I honestly believes that you do not know what the hell are talking and but you sure took the effort typing all those pointless babbling.
No shit sherlock! Maybe you aren't that bad after all.
Oh my, ad hominem? All I did is point out your baseless assumptions, of which is what it really was.
I don't think I need to attack you personally, you've already done a great job degrading yourself with each and every post you made.
