thats what i did, but then to update you have to install it thru iTunes right? that's when i get the error. or isthere any other way to update without using iTunes?

Theres no way to restore/upgrade an iPhone OS without iTunes.Unless you want to add song, video theres another alternative way to do that so.
Remember, every time you wish to restore,iTunes significantly will asked digital signature from Apple server to to a restore for your devices. So you can't even run from Apple on what ever you done on the phone.

I did that but it seems there's no correct file for it to open.. i couldn't find the ipsw file from what i downloaded..

Choose the right iPSW file for your iPhone : http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/

To find your .ipsw extension file
Mac : Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iTunes/iPod Firmware
Windows : %Userprofile%\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

.ipsw is just extension.you can't open the file unless you having a professional extract tools just like script writer.

Enjoy your iPhone ! thumbup.gif

iOS 5 is making my 3GS very slow & laggy. sad.gif Anyone facing the same issue with their 3GS?
*
You upgrade the firmware directly or clean restore ? there might possibilities for lag on i3GS if you upgrade on the current firmware.
If could, please clean restore the iOS.
