The M14x doesn't have a lot of vents at the bottom, so as of now, I'm still not sure whether the U2 works effectively for it or not
But what I do know is that the usage of SSD instead of HDD will decrease the temps by alot

My gf's M500 still slides, because of the not-so-strategic "legs" at the bottom of the laptop

It can't because the M500 has two rubber legs which will fall directly on the rubberized surface of the CM U2, which is why it'll slide lol

Yeap, the more the dust accumulate, the poorer the cooling... and who knows them dust might even affect the inner components as well
There's actually not much to do, just do all the things required (change better thermal paste, cooler pad, regular maintenance etc.), or buy an aircon haha
