If you're electronic freaks then Akihabara is the place. Im a shoe freak i bought 4 pairs costing nearly rm2k lol. My wife is my walking dictionary but I need to learn how to survive myself tho cant take her along with me all the time. If you have some extra off day try visit places other than Tokyo, maybe Kyoto, Osaka or Yokohama. Kawaii friends are mostly my wife's friends so need to ask her.

Like RegentCid said, Jan~Feb is the coldest period so be prepared to bring thick winter clothes. My advice bring one is sufficient and buy the rest in Japan because you'll find more options, stylish, plus cheaper compared to outdated winter clothes in Malaysia. That cold is no simple cold...that cold are strike into your bone.  That month Tokyo City should be around 3 - 6 C.  At Night can go as low as -3 C.  Seriously at night Tokyo street are very less people walking around.

Finally most people think winter in Tokyo is comparatively mild as winters go. Doesn't snow and not that cold. Of course everything is relative, compared to Malaysia it IS cold.

I reckon Malaysian traffic jam is worst than theirs thanks to our crap public transportation. Well don't convert the amount you're paying, think of the value. Our gas price for 1 liter is RM2.10 for regular while Japs are paying roughly Y150. That's 60 cents cheaper considering you're receiving the same amount value of money!

1) Is it even worth it for me to get Softbank or JCR rental SIM (not iPhone, sadly), or would it be better for me to just get a pre-paid B-mobile U300 1-month SIM?

Similarly, I don't think the Japanese have prepaid blackberry simpacks either. Rather, is there any way for a tourist to get Blackberry services at all in JP? Besides JCR's rentals.

Any "backdoor" way to get data/blackberry services without resorting to rentals? Preferably pre-paid or contract-free.

4) ATM machines? Can we withdraw money from ATMs in JP from say Maybank or whatever? Through Cirrus or something? Or should I stick to traveller's cheques/bag o' cash for my financial reserves?

You can withdraw from some ATMs, but you need to call your bank and let them know you will be in japan during that period.

They do not provide free Wifi like we do here that's what I noticed and of the telco companies charge pretty expensive for Overseas text/call. If im not mistaken roughly ¥50 per minute/per text. That's like RM2

If you plan to reach Shibuya in snail speed, can try the bus  Good for sightseeing too 

Or take the Narita Express, 1hour can reach Tokyo Eki (highly recommended). At the same time can grab the SUICA-NEX promo, kill two birds with a stone 

If you insist of going straight to Shibuya, stop at Ueno Eki and take the Ginza line subway to G-01 Eki. This is my method laa, maybe senpais here have better ideas

You're right. I was there last 2 years during new year. Surprisingly, Japan's NY eve celebration is not as happening as KL. It was pretty empty at midnight! I did went out on 1st Jan and it wasn't THAT crowded. You'll be fine.

I'm still waiting for my Spouse Visa Approval. It has been 2 months I guess. If its not ready by next week I'll enter Japan using Social Visit Visa. I was told by City Council personnel, once it has been approved I can change to Spouse Visa in Japan itself so I'm all good i reckon. My daughter will enter as Japanese citizen since her name (and my name) is already in the Koseki.
