ohayo gozaimasu minasan~

I'll be heading to Japan, Tokyo for about 3 months (Nov-Jan) and would like to ask you guys how much yen should I bring along. The travel is for work so accommodation, meals and transportation will be covered. The extra cash will be for personal expenses. Knowing it'll be winter season during the trip, prices should be steep, right?

Hope to get some rough estimate from the senpais here. Maybe arrange a meeting with any Malaysians living in Japan too biggrin.gif

arigatou gozaimasu..

Since all priorities are covered then you shouldn't worry a thing because those are the main concern. Cant tell you how much to bring for personal usage because that is entirely up to you whether you party like a rockstar, geek staying put in the room playing game, or whatever that you do really depends on you. Im not sure about price increase during winter, you may ask the sifus here.

Ohh btw I'll be living there by that time  smile.gif
*
Hey, nasizwan. Why aren't you in GU anymore?! rolleyes.gif

Well, I don't party like a rockstar and I'm part geek and part traveler. So most likely I'll be going about with my camera on tow and visit places of interest. My Japanese is just basic so communicating with the locals will be limited sweat.gif

Don't really have a list of things to buy (yet) but it won't be a lot I am sure.

Where will you be staying in Japan? Maybe we can meet up over the weekend or something. smile.gif

Ada la dkt GU but haven't log in lately lol. Traveling across country would cost a lot especially on bullet train but if its just around the city then its fine. My Japanese suck hard but I'll be living there soon so just imagine. I'm gonna register to language school for the first few months when I get there.

"It won't be alot" Trust me you'll think differently when you see their merchandise cause that's what happened to me LOL

Im going to stay at Shinjuku-ku. What about you? Sure we'll plan something up! smile.gif
*
Err. Don't think I'll be doing cross-country trips (would be nice though biggrin.gif ) Should be just around Tokyo.
I'm attending basic Japanese class now. Should help a bit during my stay there. Or you can just bring your wife along everywhere you go tongue.gif
Oh ya. Intro some kawaii friends if we do meet whistling.gif

I know the dangers of impulse buying (especially at Akihabara). So I'll be cautious on the spending. I hope/must!

Not sure which area I'll be at yet. Still awaiting details from bosses.

If you're electronic freaks then Akihabara is the place. Im a shoe freak i bought 4 pairs costing nearly rm2k lol. My wife is my walking dictionary but I need to learn how to survive myself tho cant take her along with me all the time. If you have some extra off day try visit places other than Tokyo, maybe Kyoto, Osaka or Yokohama. Kawaii friends are mostly my wife's friends so need to ask her.

Like RegentCid said, Jan~Feb is the coldest period so be prepared to bring thick winter clothes. My advice bring one is sufficient and buy the rest in Japan because you'll find more options, stylish, plus cheaper compared to outdated winter clothes in Malaysia. I don't mind going out in winter I love cold weather! I'm planning to go to Niigata prefecture in January for snow boarding thumbup.gif
*
Yeah. I'm a gadget freak. But I have self-control. Most of the time. lol. Would love to visit Osaka if possible. Any holidays during the months of Nov-Jan?

Thanks for the tip on the winter clothing. Can save some luggage space.

And you sir are living the life there. If only I can extend my stay there cry.gif

QUOTE(RegentCid @ Aug 18 2011, 02:06 PM)
That cold is no simple cold...that cold are strike into your bone.  That month Tokyo City should be around 3 - 6 C.  At Night can go as low as -3 C.  Seriously at night Tokyo street are very less people walking around.
*
Well then, would you be nice enough to go out for a drink with me at night in the month of January? laugh.gif

If it's that bad, then staying in at night will be best. Unless really gatal wanna go out.

Finally most people think winter in Tokyo is comparatively mild as winters go. Doesn't snow and not that cold. Of course everything is relative, compared to Malaysia it IS cold.
*
I miss winter season. Had a blast with friends in Melbourne during winter. 0 degrees at night and we were having ice-cream outdoors with only our pyjamas on. Good times!

I reckon Malaysian traffic jam is worst than theirs thanks to our crap public transportation. Well don't convert the amount you're paying, think of the value. Our gas price for 1 liter is RM2.10 for regular while Japs are paying roughly Y150. That's 60 cents cheaper considering you're receiving the same amount value of money!

QUOTE(Eiraku @ Oct 18 2011, 07:03 PM)
1) Is it even worth it for me to get Softbank or JCR rental SIM (not iPhone, sadly), or would it be better for me to just get a pre-paid B-mobile U300 1-month SIM?

All I really need is data anyway. I'm dying to get a Prepaid SIM for another phone (I have spares) but I know that's not easy.

Similarly, I don't think the Japanese have prepaid blackberry simpacks either. Rather, is there any way for a tourist to get Blackberry services at all in JP? Besides JCR's rentals.

Any "backdoor" way to get data/blackberry services without resorting to rentals? Preferably pre-paid or contract-free.

4) ATM machines? Can we withdraw money from ATMs in JP from say Maybank or whatever? Through Cirrus or something? Or should I stick to traveller's cheques/bag o' cash for my financial reserves?
interested to know the answers to those questions too. it's a SIM rental with the mobile phone or is it a prepaid SIM? not really sure how the telco works there rclxub.gif

withdrawing cash from ATMs is safer and convenient too. if it's possible.
need enlightenment from fellow senpais notworthy.gif

You can withdraw from some ATMs, but you need to call your bank and let them know you will be in japan during that period.

When I was at Shibuya....starbuck also can't affort lor.

Got so expensive or not? Will stick to the vending machines then...

BTW, how the broadband services work there? is there free public wifi around the city?
or do you need a personal telco account to stay connected?

QUOTE(tanoshi @ Oct 21 2011, 12:25 AM)
get prepaid lor! too bad i'm not in Tokyo....most gaijin knows me 'prepaid phone seller in Tokyo' hahaaha....
Bout internet data..dun think twice....just get the B-sim! hehhehe
prepaid phone seller? by contract or a one-off purchase? still trying to figure out the works sweat.gif
i'm only using the 1st generation iphone and ipad2 (wifi only) so having data is not necessary.
a basic mobile phone line is good enough. better if got good rates for oversea calls/texts smile.gif

Try to book private Onsen if they have one. You can take hot bath naked with your amois and I'll be happy to follow you too  whistling.gif

They do not provide free Wifi like we do here that's what I noticed and of the telco companies charge pretty expensive for Overseas text/call. If im not mistaken roughly ¥50 per minute/per text. That's like RM2  rclxub.gif
Private Onsen? Lol. Not worth it since I'm not hitting on any of them tongue.gif Mind to intro me some instead? brows.gif
And should you be leaving your wife alone like that? tsk tsk..

RM2 per minute call/text? Damn, I hope I'm covered for that sweat.gif
Not that I'm gonna be using much oversea calls/text. But good to have a prepaid line just in case.

Edit: Just realized the office I'll be at is in Shibuya. Easier for us to meet then thumbup.gif

Cool lets chill and have a coffee at Shibuya!
When are you leaving bro?
*
I'm leaving on the 13th Nov. Will be in Tokyo until 23rd Dec.
I'll be staying at Tokyu Stay Hotel in Shibuya.

Now, I need to study options to get to Shibuya from Narita AP. sweat.gif

My manager told me to get on the bus limousine from the airport. Which is about 2000 yen.
Any other options?

Check out Wikitravel and search for Tokyo for more info on how to get out of airport.

Alternatively, google for Narita Airport's website and click on 'Access' and they'll show you on how to go and get out of the airport.

Sweet.. Will check out on both Wikitravel and Narita AP site.. Thanks! notworthy.gif

If you plan to reach Shibuya in snail speed, can try the bus  laugh.gif Good for sightseeing too  tongue.gif

Or take the Narita Express, 1hour can reach Tokyo Eki (highly recommended). At the same time can grab the SUICA-NEX promo, kill two birds with a stone  rclxm9.gif

If you insist of going straight to Shibuya, stop at Ueno Eki and take the Ginza line subway to G-01 Eki. This is my method laa, maybe senpais here have better ideas  icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks, bro. That's a lot of help smile.gif
Will see which is the most economical route. I don't mind the longer route though. Like to take my time to adjust myself first. Heh..

I'm still waiting for my Spouse Visa Approval. It has been 2 months I guess. If its not ready by next week I'll enter Japan using Social Visit Visa. I was told by City Council personnel, once it has been approved I can change to Spouse Visa in Japan itself so I'm all good i reckon. My daughter will enter as Japanese citizen since her name (and my name) is already in the Koseki.
Will you be there this NY?
Let's chill with obee-san below this post!
Will be there soon bro! soon!
How's your Japan trip so far? Layan tak? hehehe

Good Luck with your visa thing, bro.
Finally got my internet running in the office. icon_rolleyes.gif
Today's just my third day in Japan. So far so good. Looking forward to better days!
But it'll just be a short trip. sigh.
When are you heading here? Hope we get to meet before I cabut. Sadly before Xmas already blah sad.gif
