agree with the performance is very smooth thumbup.gif

Hence, the key is to provide customization to user; Big/small/medium/etc, it's up to the users. One of the reasons and strong points of N900 "Desktop", it's one of the kind from typical smartphones.

I wonder who are the targeted market for? It's supposed to be a replacement for N900? If so, this device strays far away from N900 users expectation... First off, no hardware keyboard, it's a big turn off. The specs looks dated, and by the time it's actually launch, I wonder what's the common/general specs in the market.

Anyway, the MeeGo is not the actual MeeGo, it's actually a Maemo6/Harmattan, hence MeeGo Harmattan. It's said to be MeeGo "compatible"; From the technical/developer side, Harmatten uses the same packaging system as Maemo (deb), while MeeGo uses rpm packaging system (Linux users should be familiar with this).

I don't think a hardware keyboard is really necessary. Although N900 and BlackBerry users may not like it, many people buy iPhones/Androids without keyboards. Also unlike the N900 which had a resistive, hard-to-swipe screen, the N9 has a smooth capacitive screen, great for quick input and gaming.
*
Depends what type of user. N900 and blackberry is totally different type of user with iPhone.
N900 is hard to swipe? Have you used the N900?
Capacitive is good but not perfect, it lacks of accuracy and you can't use finger nails or other objects, even the stylus have to get the specially made stylus.

In the end, as I said, it depends on the type of users. N900 users are different from iPhone, N8, etc users; What they want and looking for is totally different. That's why I said, coming from an N900 user, most likely they would want something that is good enough to replace their device, but this device is more like a BETTER N8, or probably what N8 should be.

The resolution is good liao, better than my SGS.  biggrin.gif
You still have your brick N900 ma? Now I can live without keyboard after using touch-based phone for so long. Looking on the UI, it's for mass consumer, bit geeky than android user though. For a girl, maybe it's not for them.  whistling.gif

Added on June 21, 2011, 12:28 pm

Agree, good browser and good camera = win for me
*
I didn't brick my N900, it's not me, haha.
I can't live without keyboard, I hate using iPhone, iPod Touch, N8, C7, etc on screen keyboard. It's just "different".

QUOTE(Leo the Lion @ Jun 21 2011, 12:48 PM)
I do type long with my SGS, even made long paragraph with it before. Don't think it's a problem. :\ oh well there is no camera sample for now, but it's not eDoF at least (thank god!)
*
It's different lor, back when N900 thread starter, most of my post were done using N900. Plus, nobody knows I was typing on the N900. When I was chatting with my friend though the MSN, we're replying fast and long; They couldn't believe I'm using a handphone while they're on a PC/laptop. Anyway, another difference is, with the physical keyboard, no need for stupid pop up screen for you to type, and when you want to see something, you need to "exit" the stupid screen, read, then touch to access the "input" screen again; If the post is long, it's troublesome to read up, or make corrections in the middle between the words and so on.
It's just "different"; Of course, those that prefer touch screen have their own preference;
Both have pros and cons, each type of user will give and take on it; My point for this is the N9, if it's the supposed replacement for N900, then it has stray away and I believe it has disappoints many N900 owners looking forward for this.

I have mixed feeling about Nokia N9 TBH. Its strays too much from its predecessors, the Internet Tablet series and the uber N900.

But one thing for sure, I know that this will be my birthday present laugh.gif
*
Yup, that's what I meant. strays too much; Unless this wasn't meant for N900 replacement, but a refined N8; hahaha; Probably from marketing point of view, they want to target more users (forgetting their tablet category users),... or too much influence from the fruit company.

Well... let's see what device they will come up with from another OS which currently bears the fruit codename.

Yes, I checked out the N900 on the day it launched. Hated the screen (was using capacitive Hero that time), so really dislike resistive screens.
*
N900 has one of the good resistive touch screen that is responsive. Totally unlike those in past Nokia Symbians.

Capactive and Resistive both has it's pros and cons; It's up to the user to know and accept it's pros and cons. For tablets with small screen (especially), it's more useful to use resistive; Multi-touch is good for gaming? But the main purpose of the N900 wasn't gaming, it's the tablet experience, which I personally think using resistive was a better choice. I can use finger-nails or stylus, I don't have to zoom in when browsing, and the stylus comes in very handy. When using iPod Touch, honestly, I hated the capacitive screen as the screen is already so small (unless you're talking about iPad); but gaming experience surely it's better; Browsing? No, I have to pinch-zoom or keep zoom in and out. It's not a good experience.

For resistive on the N900, it's makes more possibilities, like this cool paint app:

And for using N900, I always posted this video (below) for many users before they make decision through the forum; It's important to know what it's capable of OR what it is; Many people just buy because people say it's good, but what they want maybe different.
N900 is very close to a mobile computer, it's a powerful device; But does everyone looking for such device? No, people want smooth UI, simple and easy to use, good camera, etc. There're many types of users around, N900 simply have it's own category of users, and these users understand the pros and cons, strength and weaknesses.

This video explains very well, and the middle part, it talks about the type of user which is not suitable for. It's just like those people who have used the computer since olden days VS the people that only use the computer during this age; They can't stand a simple lag and complains, but those that have been using, would have more patience as they have experience more, secondly, they know or try to understand what is causing the problem instead of just "blast it out'. Another example would be Internet Speed, those that have been using Internet since long ago, since dial-ups, would've experience what is called really slow and disconnection; Those that have never experience, will complain even it's "a bit" slow as if the world has come down, an example is my cousin, she complain her internet connection is super slow like the world has ended.

N9 announced....
One thing I notice... no homescreen....
Another influence from fruit?

One UI is all icons and it's in 1 page, imagine if you install tons of appplications....
No adobe Flash support.

Nonetheless, compared to it's Symbian devices, this is actually good.

That a no go from Stephen Elop.
Rather surprised that N9 has full Maps.N900 don't have turn to turn navigation till the community provided patch for it recently.

For hardcore Maemo users this interface does come as disappointment but this is what majority of regular users want.In a way it's good that Nokia listen to what people want.
Well...at least the multitask panel is live panel.Still does have some similarities as Maemo 5.
Number of sale will be important on how Nokia will pursue the UI updates.
TelefonSaya got wall of icons.watching it x9000 will make you bored. At least N9's 3 homescreens are colourfull.

I think enough of N9's discussion here.Come discuss @ N9 thread.
*
Yes, it's "business" after all.

All I can say is, to replace N900, it's a disappointment.

But, if to replace Symbian devices, it looks pretty darn promising. As I said, this probably should be what N8 should become.

Well, if you forgot something, let me remind you, Symbian will be the last OS for Nseries, so it replace symbian in Nseries la. Not replacing N900 geh. But wait for N950 if u want, currently available for developer. Or you can get it in our next ranger meeting biggrin.gif
*
Yea, I know; but N900 also falls in "N". It runs Maemo5, this N9 runs Maemo6/Harmattan.
N950, yea, heard there will be no warranty and no support, the device shipped out will be "beta" quality. Wonder if it will launch here; Nonetheless, OS wise, it's strays too far away from Maemo, it's much more simplified and the "app/icon" screen looks like Symbian Anna?

Anyway, just an opinion/pov coming from N900 perspective; But from N8 /Symbian device perspective, then this device looks good, a good replacement.

On the side note: wonder whats the "S" series? High End?
"W" series for WP7?

not a good replacement for n8.n8 is imaging flagship which is concentrate selling point on imaging.n9 cam module still far behind from n8.
*
Actually, camera module it's up to their decision, just need to include the N9 camera module. But OS design is a different thing. In terms of this OS, it feels like a replacement for Symbian than Maemo.

N8 have good camera, but that's about it... If N9 camera is not good, imagine they use N8 camera on N9.

QUOTE(sklchan @ Jun 21 2011, 05:15 PM)
only time will tell... so far it only have the F2.2 better then N8 F2.8... others like sensor size and MP still not overpass the N8... so we have to wait for its actual photoshots to be compare...  nod.gif
*
It might make a difference if there is a good camera app to control the settings manually; just like N900 with FCam.
Android also have nice camera app...

Lastly, I think most important is the AUTO-FOCUS; which luckily N9 have it.

it clearly show this new 8MP camera module utilise different mechanical approach for it's AF... as I dont think nokia allow those "tik tik tik" sound been recorded within the video...  hmm.gif
*
What "tik tik tik" sound?
If you're comparing DSLR sound, that's because of the lens.
Phone Camera or compact digital cam should have no such issue.

QUOTE(Optiplex330 @ Jun 21 2011, 05:48 PM)
Sensor merely collects information collect from lens. Garbage lens collect garbage so sensor collect garbage. So I do not see megapixel to be as important as lens.
*
I think what he meant is, for his use, he crops a lot I think. Though, you still need a good sensor and lens, else the image will be useless for cropping.

sifu... u use the N8 CAF videoing before or not? it do have "tik tik tik" when the mechanical AF in action and will be recorded within the clip...  sweat.gif
so that's why I think the nokia removed the CAF for N8 (but surely the N8 can easily perform CAF) as it's a hw limitation (where the AF mechanical are too noisy) but for this N9 8MP module they some how enable the CAF feature...  hmm.gif

*paiseh* No use before. For normal photo focusing, didn't hear the mechanical AF, probably because when video recording, the microphone is very near it? Or because it has good one, since it has good sound recording capability.

LoL, by uploading more pictures can already; People can upload any picture, don't care how bad or good it is. Look at the chart how fast it climbs, lol; That's like having some idol competition, sms in your votes, all rush to do it; In the end, what's the actual purpose of the category, it become the competition of who upload the most instead of most popular.

Anybody can register?
What's the requirement and need to bring anything?
It just say register through mail, no further information? I suppose the participants have to at least have certain degree of knowledge/experience in programming or specific platform development? Even for total beginner, I suppose there should at least be a minimum requirement?

Plus, No fees involved? What if many people just register, regardless their not from IT background? Is this by invitation?

Simple "Googling", found this:
