Hi guy, do you think the price of D3100 will drop further in 4-5 months time?
Hard to say. But one thing I know, DSLR bodies always drop in price because to make way for newer models. If you were to play the waiting game for the price to drop or wait for new models to become affordable, you'll never own a DSLR.

Unless you have all the time in the world, the more you wait, the more time is lost enjoying what could be yours.

Anybody experienced Kata 3N1? read from review, heard it will get uncomfortable when fully loaded coz the strap is too thin .
What the review says is correct. I usually grab my bag with just one of the back straps and sling it onto one side only. But because the strap is thin, that particular strap that is used more often will stretch and get thinner then the other strap. A little ugly now.

I also find the bag material is also not hard / sturdy enough to keep your stuff inside the bag in their respective compartments.

I bought mine close to RM 500 if I'm not wrong. That's about 3 years ago if I'm not wrong. What to do... I was looking for something medium size to fit "some" of my gears. That was one of the very few around. Then the "some" gears turns out to be more gears. whistling.gif

The part that I like about the bag is the quick access to gears. I also like that there is a band strap at the back of the Kata that enables you to slot in the extended handle of a normal luggage stroller bag. The Kata can sit on the stroller bag very stable and you can roll along the stroller bag with the Kata on top. No need to carry the Kata on your shoulders if you have to walk in the airport.

Interesting find ! rclxms.gif I see other patents as well. I also see a 200mm f/3.5 macro lens as well as 24-145mm or 28-145mm f/4 lens. The last one is puzzling though. Why would they want to do something that they have already done similarly with the 24-120mm f/4 VR?

Sad that around this region, it's difficult to get quality light. Northern and Southern hemisphere countries get better light. That is why most time when people go for holidays in those countries, landscape pictures turns out fantastic looking.

Ah... No wonder you're getting dark backgrounds... The SB-900 even though powerful is not to be used as a studio light. biggrin.gif

You may be able to pull that off but at the expense of higher battery usage and possibly decrease the life of the bulb.

In my other comment, I mentioned that some fill light from the flash would be awesome. This is another example unfortunately.

To get the exposure on the face correct, the white tank top goes very close to blowing the whites.

If you want to rely solely on ambient light, you need a reflector to re-direct the light.

90 degree upward bounce has it's limits. Like Kent3888 mentioned, if the ceiling is 5 floors high, you won't get any bounce effect. You'll only get direct light from the side of the flash.

btw, i compared 80-200 AF-D and 70-200 VR1.
VR1 performance at 200mm wide open is dissapointing, the AF-D is sharper.
other focal lengths no need to say la, color also better for VR1.
guess thats why VR2 was invented to satisfy wide open at 200mm tongue.gif
You tested on DX or FX body?

VR1 or VR2 version only affects FX body. On DX, they look the same.

QUOTE(celciuz @ Jun 23 2011, 07:52 PM)
VR1 not sharp at 200mm wide open? o_O...

I don't have much experience with 70200 VR, but was told performance is quite similar?
VR1 performance is horrible wide open at 200mm. This is only on FX body.

QUOTE(Everdying @ Jun 23 2011, 08:11 PM)
70-200 vr1 on left, 80-200 af-d on right, all 100% crops.
all at 105mm, very little difference with vr1 slightly better and also of cos color wise, shot about 30m away.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

at 200mm, the difference gets obvious, shot from about 80m.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Do you have the originals? Were both shot in RAW or JPG? Same exposure? VR switched on or off? On tripod?

From the first comparison pics, it does not seem that they were taken around the same time. The one taken with VR1 lens (left) has shadows while the one taken with the AF-D lens is overcast.

QUOTE(Everdying @ Jun 23 2011, 08:24 PM)
2 more shots la of the same 105mm signboard at 30m, but at 200mm this time, just to rule out focusing error at infinity.

VR1 on left.

The one on the left exhibited some camera shake. smile.gif So therefore the one on the right (AF-D) is sharper. rclxub.gif

VR of cos off.
The VR1 problem is only evident on FX bodies. Not on DX. You would not have light fall off problems wide open at 200mm on the VR1 with a DX body. For years nobody seems to complain. However if you plan on using FX in the future, you'd need to get the VR2 instead or use the AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8 like me. tongue.gif

QUOTE(Everdying @ Jun 23 2011, 09:39 PM)
taken about 10mins apart.
Look at the shadows below the mirror. Looks like more light on the VR1 shot as evidenced from the shadows. No shadows for the AF-D shot. hmm.gif Even though 10 minutes apart, make sure you get roughly the same shooting conditions. Oh, remember to mount it on the tripod using the lens' tripod collar ! Not mounting the tripod to the bottom of the camera body please...

QUOTE(Everdying @ Jun 23 2011, 09:39 PM)
camera shake at 1/2500...uh huh...while AF-D was at 1/1600...
Yeah, high shutter speed but that does not mean anything if the lens was not handled properly. If you take a look at your VR1 shot, you'll see that there's a very slight shake. You can see slight blurring on the edges of the signage letterings with t he VR1 shot. Use tripod, MLU and remote timer to eliminate all possible causes of shake.

QUOTE(Everdying @ Jun 23 2011, 09:39 PM)
anyway, i reshot a few times...same results.
Yes, I was nitpicking. Considering all the uncertainties and extra variables added in, I find only slight differences between the AF-D and the VR1 from your shots. That's expected because you shot them on the DX body. Anyway, what I saw was half half (sometimes AF-D better, sometimes VR1 better) but if done correctly, the results should favour slightly to the VR1 at all times on the DX bodies seeing that the VR1 has a newer optics.

On the other hand, the results would be more apparent if you had shot them using FX body which would favour the AF-D instead of the VR1. This is the main reason why VR2 came out. To address the shortcomings of the VR1 lens on FX bodies.

Why is it shot at -2EV? No wonder it's under exposed. When you pull back the exposure up in PP, the noise will come out.

i can handle the lens well enough, else the AF-D shots would also have what looks like apparent shake as on the VR1.
Not saying that you cannot handle the zoom. Hope you are not taking any offense. Shooting the VR1 wrongly does not automatically make shooting the AF-D wrong too. For me, out of 10 shots handheld, I can probably get 3 or 4 tact sharp ones. Just being human. biggrin.gif In my opinion, the VR1 shot is not fully represented correctly. It could be better. Look at the top of the words on the signboard "Perkhidmatan DOBI Setempat". The top edges of the alphabets are slightly smudgy.

The AF-D shot is more crisp but on second passing, I believe the AF-D shot is also minutely shaken at 200mm. But not as bad as the VR1 shot.

Do you guys prefer buying stuff from shop with bad service & good price OR great service & albeit expensive ?
Sorry to hear the run around treatment you got. I would think Photo Selangor is already infamous for those kind of things. When dealing with these kind of shops, it would be best to do own homework first (check price, specs and stock by phone) and only pay to commit once you see the stock with your eyes. If not, then best to go elsewhere or be patient.

When buying camera stuff, I doubt most would be lucky enough to be a "regular" kaki going back there for many times to buy many things. I doubt the shop owner would recognise you and treat you good when you come back. Not in my experience. Unless of course you really buy a lot of things lah.

Camera equipments are generally expensive and nowadays with the internet age, there are so many online shops that may (or may not) offer better prices as time goes by.

So I would say if RM 30 or RM 50 savings is worth it to you, then by all means get it from Photo Selangor. If it's not worth the hassle, just get it somewhere else.

For me, I would also factor in the hassle to get there and hassle of finding parking space. I would forgo the slightly cheaper price for convenience. Parking, petrol plus toll not cheap nowadays especially when you're short of time. That is why I just try to get stuff around PJ area.

Kit Lens should have no problem, at 18mm, you're at f/3.5 and at this focal length, your have more DOF unless you shoot close-up.
At 18mm on the D5100, if you take a group shot of about 4 people side by side in full length head to toe, you should be about 5 to 6 feet away from the subject. If you focus the subject at f/3.5, you get a DoF of 5.5 feet thereabouts (1.7 feet in front of subject, 3.8 feet behind the subject). That's a lot to get the subject looking sharp !

That's equivalent to 16.5mm on FX.

That said, not a fan of the skintone. Less highlight protection, tone down on saturation.

Anyway, just to share an image captured off from Pre-F1 Qualifying feed from BBC that I noticed.
