My latest upgrade on N53SN: Dual Hardisk rclxm9.gif

Total investment so far: N53SN (RM3.3K)+Extra 8GB ram (RM290) + 160GB SSD (RM950) + HDD Caddy (RM50) + DVD external case (RM25): RM4.6K++

Get one SSD (Intel 160GB).
user posted image

Replace SSD with the stock 640GB HDD.

Do a fresh install using retail Win7 Home Premium (using Product key at bottom of the notebook to activate). Asus AI Recovery disk will not work for SSD, as it was expecting a 640GB HDD, tried several time, end up getting a retail Win7 DVD to do fresh installation.

Remove keyboard by pressing the pin.
user posted image

Remove screw that holds the optical drive.

Place the stock 640GB HDD into Optical drive HDD caddy & install into Optical bay.

pirate win7 can gua... juz dun use the sword kaching the lock...

16GB is overkill, even for heavy VM user like me... I migrate all my development platform into VM, was running 2-3 VM on daily work, ram consumption never exceed 10GB... 12GB is just good enough biggrin.gif

@my_nickleo
please to some battery test, we would like to know the battery life  thumbup.gif
It's advise not to OC your laptop GPU cause OC obviously increase the GPU temp and it might wear off the thermal paste. Also, OCing your GPU could degrade its life. I have seen ppl saying that their procs could last 3-4yrs longer than their GPU. Plus the GPU is solder to the mobo, so if GPU die......time to get a new laptop  laugh.gif
*
Now I am running both SSD & HDD, so should drain the battery faster right? hmm.gif Probably will remove the HDD & test on SSD only, but need to wait till next weekend, need the HDD for works...

QUOTE(jusjus88 @ Jun 5 2011, 01:33 PM)
But we have to get a new retail disc and install huh?
*
Just download ISO from web, make sure is Home Premium 64 bits, then use the Win7 Product key came with our N53. No need purchase new Win7 license.

The new N53S doesnt have driver CeeDee given to you...
Oh, that explains the automatic switching. And ATi have to manually set whether you want it to be Intel or ATi right? hmm got pros and cons..i prefer manual switching at times ..cause i noticed that Optimus technology still isnt perfected yet..occasionally the system crashes/acts funny after a long intensive switch.
*
I do have the CD though... hmm.gif only the early batch have driver CD? The alternative is to download from vip.asus.com.

Yes, is quite easy though, just use small flat head screw driver, press on the pins (5 pins) one by one, the keyboard will lifted once all pins is released.

oh yeah my lappy currently occupied with 8GB ram, will there be any improvement in performance/start up if i upgrade to 12GB?

Although you might think its a bit wasteful to upgrade to 12GB but since the RAM is so cheap and newer application keep eating more resources, who knows what will happen after 2~3 years? tongue.gif
No performance difference... no need 12GB, unless you doing VM like some of us.

By the time apps need 12GB, your CPU can't catch up also tongue.gif time to change new machine by then biggrin.gif

1
Insert your Asus recovery disk then turn your computer on. Press "F2" to enter setup. Enter "BIOS."

2
Tab over to the "Boot" tab from the setup screen to enter the boot order properties.

3
Move the "CD ROM" option to the top of the list to make it your primary boot device. Your boot order is the order that your system uses to determine what source to boot from. You are setting this to CD ROM so your computer loads the operating system found on your CD instead of your hard drive. This will allow your recovery CD to initialize before your hard drive, so that you can load its content.

4
Press "F10" to save and exit BIOS and select "Yes" to confirm the changes you have made.

5
Reboot your computer to complete the operation.
*
Recovery disc will not work if change to a smaller capacity disc, e.g. SSD.

My experience:
1) Insert Asus recovery DVD (disc 1) & successfully boot using recovery disc
2) Start System restore (takes about 1 hour to complete restore from 5 DVDs)
3) Reboot-----> Failed to boot up the new hard drive.
4) Remove the new hard drive & connect as external drive--->new hard drive format appear as RAW (has formatted the drive before doing system restore).

End up reinstall Win7 using retail disc & activate using Product Key located at the bottom of notebook.

Just done my battery test using SSD only:
Entertainment mode with WIFI on, running 2 VM: 3 hours 30 mins.

Getting 30mins extra, compare with dual hard drive (SSD+HDD) under same condition... not so significant though.. rolleyes.gif

Oh yea forgot to tell you, since ur click the .exe file after you unrar, so it did not installed DirectX. Usually when u install most game, the will install DirectX for you.....but might not be the latest la. The latest is DirectX11. Try and dling from Microsoft Web.
*
Proper installer will check for pre-requisite component & will install if such component not found.

If really need to go for ahem copy... I usually get ISO release by reputable cracker, e.g. RELOADED, Razor & etc. tongue.gif

much more than you i am sure since you are much closer to the original manufacturing source
i am guessing (Taiwan)......Bought it for 917 euros, which is 4015 MYR
*
Closer to brand source doesn't mean is cheap... N53SN cost around RM5K in taiwan shocking.gif
Most notebook seems selling at higher price in taiwan, same applies for Dell... perhaps got tax hmm.gif

Most of us here in Malaysia got 8gb+.....some even 16GB  drool.gif ......because the price here is really cheap. Around 35 euro i think.5
Correction: 5 OS with 12GB: 2x Win7 + 2xWinXP + 1xWin Server 2008 R2 tongue.gif
