doh.gif Sorry, previously I was scared of breaking up the marimo if I massaged it too hard but after that i followed your advice and tried massaging it harder and changing the water a few times. When massaging it a slight murky greenish water was emited but after a few massages the water inside it was finally fully clean biggrin.gif

I've even read somewhere on the internet where not pearling doesn't always mean it's unhealthy too. But still I haven't seen it pearl since I bought it  tongue.gif  Maybe need to wait a few weeks for it to recover from the "ride" in the packaging?  thumbup.gif Hope it can pearl soon  unsure.gif

Mostly clear water is good.

Green is healthy, pearling is just a bonus. If you have something agitating the water like a bubbler or filter that will make it hard for bubbles to accumulate. The light needs to be quite strong to get a good amount, too.

I think in your case this needs to be said; don't over do it, be patient. It's possible to love your marimos to death. And NO MORE SUN!!

Hi everyone!

I saw a Marimo and kinda like it at the store..
So, i am kind of new here.. any advise u guy could give me?

1. Read the whole thread. All the advice in the world is here.
2. Read the whole thread again.
3. Read other threads.
4. If there's still a question you need to ask, then ask.

I've just changed water today and the weird thing is that i think it looks more like a lemon shape then sphere..
Is this normal? Lol my friend says its pregnant...

*can u guys see the photos? O_O
*
Your marimo isn't made of plastic, it's a living being and will change shape depending on its conditions. If you read the first page of this thread you'd know marimo maintenance involves rolling it once in awhile.

erm. sorry im beginner in rearing marimo. when i wash it, there are some little patch of my marimo came off.. is it normal or i squeezed it too hard? :/
*
If the patch was already partially disconnected, I think that's ok. If not, you're probably smothering it.

Thanks.. Because Ive bought it from a pet shop and the sales assistant there says no need to squeeze the marimo to clean it but just change the water and after that i found out in the net that it is a need. So, I assume they did not clean it for a long period of time :/.. Poor marimo, this is because, the water became dirty easily when i first bought .. so i kept on changing the water  cry.gif
*
The need to squeeze depends on the size. Squeezing is to facilitate the exchange of water inside the marimo and the expulsion of waste.

Like I told a previous poster, don't overdo it.

Beam the Light from ur Desk Lamp (u know, study lamp?) to ur tank.

Just make sure it's not the incadescent type, which burns a metal filament to give off light. There's too much heat from that, especially in a tropical climate.

if u're afraid to squeeze it so hard, then roll the marimo on the small towel/tissue, the dirty water will automaticly absorbed by the towel/tissue
*
I find rolling and squeezing marimo while *inside* water is a lot gentler too.

Not because you squeezed all the water out, right?

yea, medium brown, around 15% is that color and it seem wanna split into 2 as i saw a line on it
*
What is the care history for it since you got it?

I ask light/dark brown because they're different things. I've seen dark brown heal itself but light brown just means dead. Yours will probably heal. You could keep it in the saline for as long as you need, but I would taper off the salt content gradually as it improves.

As for the split, nothing you can do except avoid using heavy pressure when rubbing and allow it time to grow back into itself.

Hey, guys...I was wondering about this for a really long time and trying to find an answer...hope you guys would help me out :/

1) So...I've been trying to buy a marimo, but due to some confusion that made me consider...some people say that GENUINE JAPAN Marimos are below 3cm, because marimos abv 3cm can't be exported out from Japan...In that case, LeeYunG and other people selling giant marimos above 3cm, does it mean that they're selling "FAKE" Marimos / German Marimos?  If false, how do they get their Marimos?

Who said that?

I believe Leeyung either gets genuine giants or breeds them himself from Hokkaido marimo. Either way, they still have the same origin.

QUOTE(TheAlanChuan @ Jan 4 2013, 11:47 AM)
2) How to Differentiate between a claimed Japan Marimo and a German Marimo? I'm sorry for asking such noobish questions as I am a newbie.. and I have to know all this before I can get some...And is there really any difference if I get German marimo and not Japan Marimo?

I have European marimo. Look identical to Japanese ones to me.

Leeyung might reply to this eventually, but if you're going to be asking questions like these, you better ask the seller you're buying from. Would help us help you if you stated your sources like I asked, too.

Why didn't my answer help?

I have been placing all my Marimos in this tank for a few months. I use timer to turn on & off the tank's light for around 8 hrs every night.
However when i got back from my 2 weeks holiday recently, all my Marimos have big brown patches. Also looked like they have been floating around.
[attachmentid=3246763]
Is it because of too much light? I have done fridge spa for a few days but dun see any improvement. Any advise?
*
The brown parts look pretty dead. That's probably why spa doesn't work.

A few of mine looked like that after getting too much sun. Stayed that way for about two months, so I used a pair of scissors to trim off the dead stuff on the surface until I could see green, being careful not to cut too much of the green off and maintaining the round shape. It still looked 50% grey, but I left it like that. Now it's green all over again.

I keep my marimo in a tank with a white 24W T5 light, 12-16 hours a day. They don't seem to get burned by it.

i used rubber band to tie and hold it into round shape...is it ok like that???
*
No! If it has any tension it's going to squeeze the marimo flat. Use string instead, much gentler.

One question thou, closed or open top, which is better?
Don't have any other aquatic creatures with my Marimos.
*
Best = open tank with water filtration.
Better = open tank.
Ok = closed. Change water regularly.
