My Shih Tzu also face this problem, until 1 day mom bought a pair of scissors with tooth and I started snipping away all the excess fur. Problem solved.
About the snarling, try muffling the mouth. It will make it submissive. |

Yeah, it's the muzzle. Once it's muzzle, it won't move that much anymore, let alone snarling at you.
