i thought of liking 2 share this article about this fallen world giants n the best runners up ever in world cup history besides czechoslovakia

http://soccerfans.livejournal.com/645972.html

their story of the downfall kinda reminded like our local football team downfall in the 90s n 2000s but hungary worst is still way better than malaysia worst at that time

here is their last international match n i think they just need 2 buff up their defenses more based on the highlights

just like old hungary team that i only know ferenc puskas in real madrid,,,i also only know one player in new hungary team that is zoltan gera in fulham...gera may not bcum the new puskas but i think he can help spearhead the modern hungarian football team 2 its former glory days that nearly win the world cup in 1954 laugh.gif rclxms.gif it will b better world cup if hungary can come back 2 the best 32 teams in future world cups...so what do u think of chances 4 potential revival of the former giants???plez post the views here ya rclxms.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

Can't answer your question because I don't really know what happened to their demise. I can only guess that it's because they never bothered to look into developing the structure of football there. Crappy wages, a lack of youth academies which some atttribute to the fall in communism perhaps?

Anyway, here is an article on the topic if anyeone's interested.

Football then is different from football now.

There was less disparities in money and a the relative youth of the game gave a big chance for everyone to innovate tactics like that Hungarian coach did (can't remember his name).

Shame really, but bar a generation of talent making it into Europe (think Croatia 1998), it will be hard to rise again.

TS, you can read the history of Hungarian football; there are some books around explaining the demise of Magical Magyars.

It's because of the revolution war that they lost two good generations of footballers. The first team squad players deserted the country via their army club, Kispest Honved's European Cup travel and the youth team squad also escaped to other parts of Europe (as i can remember).

Kispest Honved also had Zoltán Czibor and Sándor Kocsis, both of whom joined their compatriot Laszlo Kubala at Barca. Later they both played an integral part in Barca's success of breaking Real Madrid domination in Europe, beating the latter in semis in 1961 EC. But they eventually lost to Eusebio's Benfica. Sandor Kocsis was the top scorer in 1954 World Cup, and his record in international was phenomenal: 75 goals in 68 app, just above Gerd Muller's goal per game ratio.

Just now I mentioned Laszlo Kubala. Well he was also a Hungarian, but he only played 3 times for his NT. He fled his country just before Communist Revolution occurred in 1949. In 1950 he joined Barcelona, and he became an instant hero in Catalunya. Remember Alfredo di Stefano? Well there was a story that di Stefano was set to join Barca (he even played 2 games for Barca), but an agent persuaded him that the Barcelona team could not fit 2 big superstars i.e di Stefano and Kubala at the same time. Y'know, either one may lose out the agent said. di Stefano then famously signed for Madrid. After that Real Madrid became a legendary team, while I couldn't found much infos on Barca's team. But in 1962 World Cup, Spain was set to show to the world their fearsome striking partner that never materialized with Barca before. Kubala and di Stefano were called up, but under very unfortunate events, BOTH of them didn't take part because of injuries.

Well perhaps both Kubala and di Stefano may not be related to the topic, but I needed to throw some time while waiting for Barca match biggrin.gif
