Overview

The Nintendo 3DS is the next generation for Nintendo’s handhelds. The DS redefined how portable gaming should be played and the 3DS will continue to revolutionize how we game on the go. Packed with so many different features, the Nintendo 3DS looks to be the quintessential entertainment device.

The Nintendo 3DS improves upon the DS design in every way imaginable. It has a similar clamshell design as its predecessor as well as a lot more horsepower under its hood. As the name suggests, the 3DS main draw or “gimmick” is the ability to display stereoscopic 3D visuals, providing an experience similar to watching 3D movies in the theater, all without the need for any glasses. This 3D effect can be turned on or off, or adjusted depending on the user with a slider located on the right of the system.

Machine Features

Activity Log

user posted image
-The Activity Log tracks both game play, noting which games have been played and for how long, as well as physical activity, counting every step taken while carrying a 3DS. The feature encourages walking more every day to earn Play Coins, which can be used with compatible games and applications to acquire special content and a variety of other benefits. Play Coins cannot be used in the Nintendo eShop.

Augmented reality
user posted image

Several augmented reality games are included on the 3DS with 6 paper cards that interact with the games.
Becouse of the small size, there could be a chance u might lose them, thankfully u can simply print them out.
AR games or Augmented Reality games is one of the coolest features for the Nintendo 3DS. The AR games creates a game from the real world.. right on your coffee table or on your office desk. The AR games uses the 3DS outer camera with the AR cards. All you would need to do is place one of the 6 AR cards included with the system on your desk and the 3DS will create a virtual game using the platform you placed the AR cards on.

Nintendo 3DS Face Raiders
user posted image

Put a friendly face right into the action with the built-in Face Raiders game. Using the camera, you can take a photo of yourself, a friend or family member, which is then placed right onto a range of shooting targets. To play, you'll need to move with your Nintendo 3DS system, physically leaning and turning to search all around and aim high and low, taking out your targets. 3D gameplay combined with the gyro sensor feature makes Face Raiders a fun surprise for any type of gamer.

Backward compatibility

In addition to its own software, the Nintendo 3DS is backward compatible with Nintendo DS software, including DSi software. However, like the Nintendo DSi, the Nintendo 3DS is incompatible with DS software that requires the use of the Game Boy Advance port. Nintendo DS and DSi software cannot be played with 3D visuals on the 3DS. The original DS resolutions are displayed in a scaled and stretched fashion due to the fact that the resolutions of the 3DS screens are larger than those of the DS. However, if the user holds down the START and SELECT buttons upon launching the DS software, the displays will be at the DS's native resolution, albeit smaller with black borders.

System Transfer

System Transfer is a feature that enables you to transfer downloadable software already purchased on a Nintendo 3DS system to another Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo DSiWare games & applications purchased on a Nintendo DSi or a Nintendo DSi XL system also can be transferred to your Nintendo 3DS.* This function will be available after hardware launch.

3DS Messaging Service

The Nintendo 3DS also supports a new messaging system The service allows users to send and receive messages from their friends on their friends list via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The 3DS will alert the user when they have received a new message via one of the LEDs on the system.

Nintendo E-Shop

Rediscover classic portable games.
The Virtual Console™ service for Nintendo 3DS features games from classic handheld systems like Game Boy™ and Game Boy™ Color. You can also find 3D Classics, 3D enhanced versions of games from past systems.

Choose from a variety of downloadable games.
You can download Nintendo 3DSWare games,Nintendo DSiWare games and applications ‐ previously available on Nintendo DSi™ systems.
It was announced at the Nintendo of Japan press event on September 29, 2010 that the 3DS will have a Virtual Console Service with Game Boy, Game Boy Color games, as well as "classic" games in 3D. At the 2011 GDC Nintendo announced that TurboGrafx 16, and Game Gear games would be available for Virtual Console. Purchases are made through the "Nintendo eShop" Which will release at May 2011, using a cash-based system instead of a points-based system as used for the Wii and DSi.

StreetPass & SpotPass Mode
user posted image

The system supports multiplayer gameplay via a local wireless connection or over the Internet. Expanding upon the connectivity of the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo 3DS features an "always on" background connectivity system that trademarks suggested was named "CrossPass", which can automatically seek and connect to wireless network nodes such as Wi-Fi hotspots, sending and downloading information in the background while in sleep mode or while playing a game. In Nintendo's September 29 conference, the confirmed Western names of the CrossPass Tag Mode service would be StreetPass and SpotPass, with SpotPass being the ability for the 3DS to seek Wi-Fi signals and automatically download content while in sleep mode and StreetPass being the passive communication between 3DS systems held by users, an example being the sharing of Mii avatars.

During the 2011 Game Developers Conference, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime announced that Nintendo has partnered with AT&T to provide free access to AT&T hotspots via the Nintendo 3DS. Users will be able to connect to these hotspots in late May.

The background connectivity allows users to exchange software content regardless of what software is currently in the console. Sharing content is stored in a "data slot" in the console. Using this data slot, Nintendo 3DS users can readily share and exchange content for multiple games at the same time, whenever they are connected, even when playing unrelated games.Using the console's background connectivity, a Nintendo 3DS in StreetPass Mode can automatically discover other 3DS units within range, establish a connection, and exchange content for mutually-played games, all transparently and without requiring any user input, even when the console is dormant. For example, in Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition, if the user passes someone with the same software, he has a battle to collect trophies from the other player.

It can be customized to fit the user's preferences, including opting out of it altogether for selected software. One application being considered is functionality to "automatically acquire magazine and newspaper articles", similar to networked e-book reader applications.[90] Other improvements to online functionality include how Friend Codes are implemented, with only one code necessary for each console, as opposed to the DS and Wii where individual Friend Codes are required for each piece of software.

Nintendo 3DS StreetPass Mii Plaza & Nintendo Mii Maker

StreetPass Mii Plaza is the social network for the Nintendo 3DS. StreetPass Mii Plaza lets you meet and greet with other 3DS users where you can exchange things like mii data and game play info. It'll also let you know when a Mii friend is close to you.
The Mii character tool on the Nintendo 3DS is similar to the Wii one except the 3DS allows you to take a picture of yourself and the 3DS will generate a Mii from your picture. After it generates a Mii, it'll give you the option to adjust the settings to make it look closer to you.

Internet browser

Nintendo announced that an Internet browser will be available in a Next System Update with E-Shop. The browser can access WEP and WPA access points. It has been scheduled to be released in late May as part of a system update.

Nintendo 3DS Sound
user posted image

The Nintendo 3DS sound app lets you listen to MP3s or AAC files that's saved on your SD card. The 3DS also allows you to record and play sound with the built-in microphone and use the filters on your recorders to make cool sounds.

Nintendo 3DS Camera
user posted image

Take amazing 3D photos with the built-in Nintendo 3DS outer cameras, and bring your memories into a whole new dimension. Then utilize a variety of lenses and tools, such as the Merge lens, Pinhole lens, or Graffiti tool, to add flair to your photo gallery.

Technical Specs

The Nintendo 3DS is based on a custom PICA200 graphics processor from a Japanese start-up Digital Media Professionals (DMP). It has two screens; the top screen is a 3.53 in (90 mm) 5:3 3D screen with a resolution of 800×240 pixels (400×240 pixels per eye, WQVGA) that is able to produce an autostereoscopic three-dimensional effect (one without 3D glasses) using a parallax barrier display, while the bottom screen is a 3.02 in (77 mm) 4:3 non-3D resistive touch panel with a resolution of 320×240 pixels (QVGA). The 3DS weighs approximately 230 grams (8.1 oz) and, when closed, is 134 mm (5.3 in) wide, 74 mm (2.9 in) broad, and 21 mm (0.83 in) thick. It has 128 megs of ram,6 times bigger than DSi ram .It uses ARM Processor.

The system features several additions to the design of the original DS, including a slider on the side of the device that adjusts the intensity of the 3D effect, a round nub analog input called the "Circle Pad", an accelerometer, and a gyroscope. The 3DS has two cameras on the outside of the device, capable of taking 3D photos, as well as a camera positioned above the top screen on the inside of the device which faces the player, capable of taking 2D photos and capturing 2D video; all cameras have a resolution of 640×480 pixels (0.3 megapixels). The system will support a 2.4 GHz 802.11 Wi-Fi connectivity with enhanced security WPA2.It also support Microphone. An included cradle acts as a charger and allows for faster downloads and uploads via infrared port.

At launch, the Nintendo 3DS cards hold up to 2GB of game data and look almost exactly the same as those of the current DS. However, there is a small tab jutting out on the one side, which prevents 3DS cards from being inserted into a Nintendo DS.

On the issue of piracy, game developer THQ claims that the Nintendo 3DS features sophisticated anti-piracy technology which Nintendo believes is able to significantly curb video game piracy, which had increasingly depressed the handheld market with the proliferation of cheap flash memory and the rise in file sharing.

Battery which uses 1300 mAh last around 3-5 hours depending on screen brightness, Wi-Fi, sound volume, and 3D effect and 5-8 hours for DS compatibility mode

and Nintendo 3DS is Region locked, meaning you can't play Euro games on US console and Vice Versa. It applies to other region also.
3DS support max capacity of SDHC Memory Cards up to 32GB

For Malaysian 3DS users!

nintendo video, I know 2 ways to do it:

1. Using a vpn, free US vpn service like TunnelBear works very well, but your computer connected to the vpn need to be an internet server or setup a internet sharing connection, or have a wifi dongle that can do AP (access point). Then connect your 3DS to your wifi that pointed your vpn pc as a gateway. But nintendo video download those 4 video at random times, so im not sure when the 3ds will downloaded their video, or i could be wrong..

2. This maybe hard for a normal user, setup our own dns and webserver, this one is called a dns/web spoffing. It would be too long to explain how to do it but this works very well on my setup, yeah i have my own server run 24 hours in my house. If I have free time, I'm planing to move this to my dedicated server in US, so everyone can do this easily without the trouble headache setting up dns and web server part, just use my dns server ip (replace those google dns u been using 8.8.8.8 with my dns ip, u know google also been blocking and filtering the internet now) then nintendo video will work auto-magically.

An FAQ to the NINTENDO 3DS

Dear Kyo,

1. What is the Nintendo 3DS?
It's the latest iteration from the Pokemon Company, Nintendo. Basically an enhanced version of the Nintendo DS with 3D viewing capabilities, without glasses.

2. How awesome is the 3D effects?
To be frank, that depends on the titles of the games. If it was in the menu screen however (and the initial setup), the depth is truly where it's at. Imagine seeing something that makes you feel that there's something behind the 3D screen, even when in actuality there's nothing behind it. Pop outs are not that obvious, YET.

3. Which versions are you selling?
I have the Asian and US versions. It's better for me to sell the Malaysian ones though.

4. Why the Malaysian ones? What's the different between the two?
Well, for starters it's cheaper! haha. But on another note, there is no virtual difference, except for these:-
- The adapter for the Malaysian one is made for Malaysian wall plugs. The US one would have to make you get a stepdown converter or a third party adapter compatible with Malaysian plugs. (Stepdown converter is a better option and I can normally get it around RM 25)
- The Malaysian version has a 3 months official warranty by MM. Soft Malaysia, that's the official distributor for all Nintendo products in Malaysia.

5. Why is the warranty 3 months though? Can't it be forever?
That's really up to the decision of the distributor though. Heck, even I wish it was guaranteed forever!

6. OK. So what games can I play in it?
The DS and 3DS games. GBA is not in unfortunately.

7. Is it free region like the DS Lite?
Sadly, not so. For the 3DS, DS games are region free, so you can play any game from any region you wish. However, 3DS is actually region locked. So, if you're using the Malaysian console, you can only play Asian and US games. Vice Versa. We're not allowed to use Europe/Australia or Japan games in our Malaysian 3DSs.

8. That's a bummer.
Yes indeed.

9. So how much is the price for a console? And what colors are available?
The price is RM 640. There's the official Cosmo Black, Aqua Blue, and Flame Red for the Malaysian ones.

10. What about the Pink and White colors?
Not available yet as of now. But you can get the US versions. Those are available.

11. What's the average price for the games though?
Frankly, it can go from RM 50 to RM 200.

12. What do I get in the box of the 3DS?Here's what:
- The 3DS Console (DUH)
- The Adapter
- The cradle. (This is just some fancy thing you can put on your table and see the 3DS charge. I wish it had wireless capabilities frankly)
- The Augmented Reality Cards (There's 6 of them)
- An SD Card 2GB
- The stylus (Which is actually in the 3DS already)

13. Wait, why is the US version of the box slimmer than the Malaysian version?
Beats me. I could've saved SO MUCH in shipping if it was slimmer. Sheesh.

14. I got my 3DS already. What should I do with it now?
TURN.IT.ON. What else would you want to do? You could charge it, but you're better off turning it on first.

15. It's on. What's next?
Follow the instructions as displayed. Read carefully and make sure you follow them one at a time. If you're afraid of doing that, you can always ask me to help set it up for you when you purchase the 3DS.

16. Should I set the country setting to Malaysia?
Ah, frankly speaking, I'd recommend setting it to United States. This is for the Nintendo E-Shop purposes.

17. Ok! I'm done with the setting. What should I do now?
Boot a game! Play with the music editor, do something wild. Throw it a dog. You choose. tongue.gif

18. Alright fine, can I look at the menu first?
Sure2.

19. I've heard of updates for the 3DS. How do I do that?
Simple. First, you can choose to log into online to get it updated Over The Air (OTA). Or, a much simpler one is to buy one of the latest games and the update would already be included in the cartridge. Just follow the steps again since it's easy.

20. What's Faceraiders?
Ah, it's a fun game where you snap someone's picture, shoot them as you use the 3DS's gyro capabilities.

21. The 3DS has GYRO???
Owh yes, so you can imagine yourself being a bit of a fool if you're playing the camera too.

22. OK. My head spins when it's on full 3D. Do you sell anything that can take that away? Maybe some pills or something.
I'D LOVE TO SELL THAT IF IT EXISTED. But no, it's a matter of practice and getting used to it really. If the level is too high for your taste, the slider can adjust it just nice.

23. Owh. So, how long does the battery last?
At max 3D and max volume, 3 HOURS TOPS. The longest it could go should be around 5 to 6 hours.

24. Nintendo sucks batteries. What gives?
Justification would point to the 3D part, because it gives the same amount of playtime if you were playing a DS game on a DS Lite.

25. Anyway to improve it?
There's battery packs you can purchase that claim to double the life of the battery. Well, maybe not fully double, but extra juice is always good.

26. How do I play the AR Card games?
Choose the setting and place the card as instructed. Have fun with the Question Mark Box!

27. Owh! I see the Nintendo E-Shop you mentioned earlier. Wait, why shouldn't I choose Malaysia again?
Technically, because Malaysia doesn't have a dedicated server that sells the content in the shop. That's why US is preferred.

28. Ok, any other tips I should know about the E Shop?
Here's some:
- Find a state that doesn't charge you taxes. You can Google to find it out.
- Unfortunately, the E Shop doesn't support Malaysian credit cards. So buy the 3DS cash codes.
- If you plan to download a lot of stuff, get a bigger SD card.
- There's a SLEW OF DEMOS in the E Shop. That's your best bet in trying a game first before actually purchasing it.

29. You mentioned on the 3DS cash code, how and where can I get it.
CHA CHING! I'm selling the codes at RM 80 (prices subject to change due to foreign exchange rates) for USD 20 worth.

30. In case my 3DS breaks down, what should I do?
If you bought the Malaysian version and you're still covered under the warranty period, follow the warranty card supplied. If you bought the US version, send it to a shop for repair if there exists one. Unfortunately, Kyo doesn't do repairs.

(Still under construction)
