If you use Toslink/Coaxial digital output, you don't get dtshdma/ddtruehd or no HD audio, it is pretty clear, right?
I have Himedia Q5 4K30, it can play up to 4K 30fps, himedia connects to Anthem MRX 300 amp which is HDMI 1.4 but it doesn't work well with 4K resolutions, I have JVC X5000 4K HDR projector.
When I set player output to 4K 30fps, I only get 4K picture output on my screen (FYI I set HDMI pass through at my Anthem amp), but no sound output regardless of what file I play, this is pretty common issue when playing 4K movies with old AMP, few ways to get around it without upgrading AMP to HDMI 2.0
1. Player has dual HDMI output - one HDMI 2.0a for 4K HDR video, another one HDMI 1.4 for audio output
2. Get device like HDfury Integral (splitter) and HDfury link (scalar) to split the HDMI from player to two output , and connect one of the output to scaler to downscale it to 1080p HDMI 1.4, then the scaler connect to the old AMP.
yes, coaxial/toslink can't do hd audio.
yr himedia "q5 4k30" - it will help if u say the actual model becos there are like 5 diff "Q5" models - diff chipsets, diff android, diff capabilities.
but since u said "it doesn't work well with 4K", i wud think it is one the earlier ones where it can play some 4k 8bit but not 4k 10bit or 4kHDR.
to play all kinds of 4k, incl 10bit, hdr10, dolby vision, u need to get the new q5pro/q10pro (the HDR wrong aspect ratio issue should be fixed with next firmware).
yr AVR, hdmi 1.4 or 1.3a can only do 1080p with HD audio.
you can pass thru 4k with HDMI pass thru but that will shut off the audio - this AVR feature is meant to set the AVR on standby but pass thru video AND audio to the TV. since u r not using TV but projector, u get video but no audio.
yr situation is clear, many are in same situation - player, AVR, TV capabilities are not in synch.
as they are now, u can either give up 4k video to get HD audio or give up HD audio to get 4k video.
in the longer term to use yr projector to the max, first, u get a new player and then a new AVR:
- new player that can do 10 bit, HDR, dolby vision - cheapest one will be Q5pro, RM500 or so.
- new AVR (4k HDR, dolby vision, atmos, DTSX), RM2-3k for entry level, lower power.
the methods u mentioned, i can't comment - i do not know the prices or how effective they will be for yr equipment over time as the file formats change with new tech.
