so how much is the M17x R3 selling for now? at the malaysian dell page it's a minimum 7.4k with gtx460m only.

edit:
my m11x-R1 hinge just got replaced and i didn't need to pay anything (my warranty expired too). I feel that all m11x owners should know this. Dell should replace your broken hinge even after warranty because this is a known defect.

what you need to do,
1.) Snap a picture of your broken hinge
2.) Send these links to Dell

Chris M response, this is the most important post, it saws that dell will replace the hinge regardless of warranty (it has to be broken first though).

got a used m17x r3 from US, friggin worst deal ever, the GPU will overheat up to 90C, when i open the case, i found out the f**king thermal pad was placed on the wrong surface, thank god i bought some new thermal paste and did a repaste, now the machine is performing up to expectations.

still though, i wasted 4 days to get everything up to my expectations sleep.gif;

i got more horror stories

left speaker has buzzing sound, i had to strip the whole laptop down to barebones to glue 2 piece of papers togather, the buzzing is caused by the paper touching the speakers
missing screws
missing cmos cap/holder
...

u buy from local dealer or direct from US??

haha, u r the 4th person complain about US set.  nod.gif  and ur warranty transferable to malaysia??  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
yea just use the international transfer form at dell's site. it's actually immediate if you already have a dell account. i bought my m11x from malaysia dell so they could transfer it easily.

I slightly regret getting the m17x r3, the US seller was not an honest person. I shoulda went ahead with one of the more reputable resellers ie: HIDevolution but i wanted to get it cheap so i went ahead with the used one. still has bout 11months of warranty too.

how much u bought it? wat spec?

i jus get the good deal for Refurbish Unit by Dell Malaysia Alienware m17x -r3, normal spec @ rm5399 only smile.gif  flex.gif

heh that 6870m is the reason why your lappy is cheap, it's on par with a GTX460, but i wanted the 6970m and if you go to dell's us site you'll find it's a 250USD upgrade, the 6990m is a 300USD upgrade, maybe i should have waited a bit.

I bought for about 1900 USD including shipping with 8GB ram and 6970m, the rest is stock spec. but of course i had to deal with alot of issues with the seller and this piece of shit of a machine before i can fully enjoy it.

u reapply ur thermal paste har?

yep, using Artic MX-4 from one of the lowyat sellers. first time doing it too, was easier than i thought. I would never try repasting the G73, too much hassle to get to the GPU.

love alienwares easy access and upgradability.

for crysis 1 i play at 1080p with all settings at ultra (enthusiast) except shadows and blur at medium. hover at 30-40 fps.

for witcher 2 i set all to very high, 1080p, hover at 30-40fps.

my OC is 790 core 1000 memory. can probably go higher but it gets unstable at 800 core.

or you can just refer to notebookcheck's benchmarks. http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD...0M.43077.0.html

so after u apply the thermal paste .... the max temp reduced?

Added on July 25, 2011, 12:32 pmcos now my max temp is like 106+
lol i check after gaming.. idle is like 50+
*
wow.. how can you game at 106C? your GPU doesn't throttle itself?

that's waaay to high.

my GPU starts throttling down to 400 Core 900 mem when it stays at 90C for more than 10seconds and I found out that the Thermal Pad (not paste) is not applied correctly, i corrected the error and reapplied new Paste, you have to reapply because you have to take apart the GPU and the heatsink.

I will upload my GPUz log for after and before i applied the paste when i get back.

edit: I idle at 58 - 60C, which is normal for 6970m.

use these guides
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-...ideo-guide.html
http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m17...ide-w-pics.html

the 2nd link is for gtx460 but they are very similar, you can reuse the thermal pads, i've been unable to find any pad sellers around KL.

it is not hard but you must be very diligent, make sure you prepare all the items listed, add in a air-can just in case you need to blow off dusks. I had a problem when i connected my GPU, i had blue lines on my display, so i blow the GPU connectors and re-seated the GPU again and it was fixed.

Added on July 25, 2011, 3:56 pmnid to take our gpu+ heat sink & cpu+ cpu heatsink and apply right?
*
na you dont need to apply the paste on the heatsink's side, if anything you DO NOT WANT to put too much paste or TOO FEW paste.

too much paste, and you end up not transferring heat effectively between the GPU die and the heatsink.

too little paste, and you don't have enough surface area covered on the GPU die.

the point of pasting is to fill in any micro cracks on the die's surface.

i can say with confidence it's the best price for performance card in the market at the moment, 6990m is slightly premium but at least it's not as huge of a premium when compare to the overpriced 580m. and the 580m is just a slightly overclocked 485m (no extra hardware), whereas the 6990 has more cores than 6970m. look at the spread sheet below and you'll be able to see a clear difference between the 2.

*
I'm not sure what you are trying to say here, are you saying we should ignore official spec sheets, benchmarks, reviews..etc and just buy with preference? without doing some homework?

howabout you make a better argument other than saying "don't compare to paperwork"? you want benchmarks? the 6990m and 580m are neck in neck in benchmarks. real world Game performances? same thing. 3D? the 580m 3D does not work in m17x r3 at the moment. Driver support? AMD/ATI's support has been uptodate so far, even enabled MLAA, that's something nvidia has yet to release themselves. price point? the 6990m is a 300USD upgrade, the 580m is a 600USD upgrade. Phyx and CUDA support? cool i guess, but with a 300USD premium on top? not my cup of tea.

I know some people will still choose the 580m due to nvidia preference but hell any person that has done their homework would know which one's is the better deal.

calm down man, dont be too serious, outside review are paid to do review, so they will do everything to optimise, where u found that benchmark on notebookcheck there, i comfirm 100% not accurate, GTX580M score at 13k? my 6970 score a the same range. 6990 also the same, i rather save those 600USD or 300USD for just a small small different....... but still nvdia always have the best driver(no throttle issue, no shuttering) where my 6970/ greassemonkey 6970Xfire also having this issue. and im not saying nvidia is better as well, they offer overprice GC just to clock up some on the older version and come out new version. i own all the series of Alienware, and i have most of the specs, u can ask here people. just dont waste money on some of the minor different from what u said. i rather go for 6970..... save 300++ for other stuff or SSD upgrade, no matter how strong is ur PC, without SSD also cannot.

If i did offense u, im so sorry. Maybe im not well in doing home work, i know how to save money only
*
i take offense when someone throws out random posts about "don't do this, don't do that" while not backing up their claims. But anyhow, I believe we both agree that the 6970m is the best card for price performance at the moment. Also if you read correctly, the 6990 or 580 are not a 300USD and 600USD upgrade from 6970 (that's from 6870), so effectively it is a 50USD and a 350USD upgrade. Obviously 50USD for another 10% increased performance won't be everyone's cup of tea (it's MYR300), but for people that are buying the m17x r3 new, the 6990m would be a better investment in the long run.

Come on .. don't be so sensitive, I am just pointing out what I see here and NBR forum. I did not say anything offend u right? Actually, the post is open to anyone answer. It is only a discussion.

Wait a second, what I am asking is purely from a technical point of view. Like some said CPU won't affect game except SC2, but in fact some M17x r3 users in NBR benchmark their 6990m, the one with higher cpu(2820qm) are really getting better vantage score. Thus I am getting confuse again.

I am not trying to act like professional. All those written are reading from both Lowyat and NBR forum for the past 2 months after I decided to get a gaming notebook.

Actually I also regret to ask those question in this thread and putting u name on it. (I will edit my initial post with your name remove, I think it is better, if not it looks like I try to attack u, this is not my intention.) What I really asking in the very post first is "why no refurbish system with 6990m ?" Then u told me because nvidia is better? This make me more confuse, so I posted out what I read and after thought in those forum.

Why suddenly rich become a famous word. haha.. I never say I am rich or anything. And I NEVER say buying refurbish is bad. What I dun understand is, why ppl dun wait a little bit longer, save up $$, to get a better graphic card. After all they are buying a very expensive high end laptop.

When I asked ppl for opinion for graphic card in NBR, 9 out of 10 told me to get a better one,  since upgrading in future is expensive and troublesome.

I am not rich, of coz I have to lowball.. hehe.. Dell online price is ridiculous high. You reseller in lowyat are giving a MUCH BETTER price. Of coz, it is better to deal with u guys. I am not crazy or stupid to throw away $$ like this.

When did I blame other, they may not get it because the better card was not out yet when they purchased their machine or some other reasons.

But seriously, isn't it a forum for people to ask what they want to know except personal attack. So only ppl already purchase alienware can talk here and no other?

I am not pin pointing u, but from last your 2 sentence from last post. I really feel that u have an attitude problem. Please behave.
*
i would advise if you already have the 6970m, it's probably a good idea to wait for the 7000m series GPUs, unless you can find a 6990m cheap. the upgrade is mostly for people that are stuck with 460m, 6870ms.

and for the refurbish system with 6990m question, i believe the 6990m was only launched for like 1 months+? so give it time, bet you when the next new lines of GPU comes out, you'll see many people returning their 6990ms or cancel their orders..etc.

I don't think you've done anything wrong here, resellers can be defensive if you try to ask how they get their supplies, it's natural.

I prefer the 6990m because i'll take manual switching over optimus anyday.

wowow you do trade in as well? that's actually very decent deal. May I know what's included in the package?

1.) does it include thermal pads? (for the mem modules)
2.) does it include new heatsinks designed for 6990m? (fyi, the 6990m heatsink has slightly more.. err. heatsinks lol)
3.) also, these are compatible with m17x r3? that means no need mod bios upgrade..etc?
4.) warranty is from dell?

please include me in your batch order, im very interested icon_idea.gif

edit: oh wait, i think redesigned heatsink is for 580m hmm.. not sure bout 6990m. http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviewimages...d_gtx580m-2.jpg
