Ok .. after some lengthy research .... since i was outdated for so long XD
I've made my choice for my future laptop + its accessories , I hope you guys can tell me your opinions + suggestions about it =D

I decided to go for an M17xR3, price after customization = RM 12k++

And about the accessories ... there are quite a few things im not so sure about >.< not sure are there better options but my current choices are :

1. Keyboard

a.Roccat Isku
b.Razer Black Widow Ultimate

2.Mouse

a.Roccat Kone+

3.Headphone

a.Steelseries 7H USB

4.Mousepad

a.Razer Destructor

5.Others

a.Roccat Apuri

I'm still searching for a monitor ...and considering wether should i buy speakers .... cause if im gonna rent a room .... i doubt i will have the chance to blast them... hope u guys can give me some advice on my choices =D btw roccat isku is not out yet =D but i think it will soon

btw my estimation is that all this will be around rm15k all together , if u guys can intro me to some good, honest , cheap shops i would be grateful =D
btw i live in malaysia ~ juz so u know =D shops at kl or jb area are fine for me =D

If your gonna get kb and even monitor...wouldn't it be better if you just went ahead and get a desktop?
*
my answer's the same with tjinn, seems like you're getting monitor, keyboard....won't you consider a desktop instead? and i see that you're gonna rent a room, won't moving be a hassle later on?

Maybe Rowan or anyone who own M17x R3?
Really appreciate if you guys can do that. rclxms.gif

Plus it'll make this thread more exciting. laugh.gif

I have to admit the delivery time for your monster is very fast  shocking.gif
I'm impressed haha  laugh.gif
Okay okay, for the Cooler Pad, its either U2 or U3... since I've already got the U2, the cooling efficiency and size of the U2 for the M14x will determine whether the U3 is worth considering or not  hmm.gif
As for the sleeve and bag, its a shame that Dell Malaysia din't take in the M14x sleeve and M14x Orion backpack...
Might need to find some other alternatives... Seen some nice Case Logic ones (used them before for my Qosmio F60, they're very good), but it seems like the sleeve is not "thick" enough to accomodate the M14x, and that's going to be a problem since there isn't much notebook sleeves in shops  sad.gif

Added on May 15, 2011, 3:39 pm

There's a lot of notebook backpacks from other renowned brands right?  hmm.gif
but then of course those are not as big as the M17x Orion backpack... but they should be able to carry one M17x instead of 2  laugh.gif  laugh.gif
*
yea, but with all the stuff that i carry, i think i would need the Orion backpack....haha....

hmm, thanks to dell support just now, my whole computer is screwed up a bit....i might have to wait for the technician to do a whole check up....the command center button is not working, my CDs are not ejecting, i set my touchpad to disable once i have a mouse in, but now it is working....i'm slightly pissed at how Dell's support kinda screwed up my settings....and didn't bother to change it back!

Edit : managed to system restore.....how come i never thought abt that doh.gif.....lol

Does anyone here own an alienware m14x? how's the heat?

Heard from reviews that some overheats sad.gif

Another thing is, do alienware laptops heat up at the palmrest area (below AWSD Keys most important, as i use a mouse for the right side )

Help is much appreciated , looking for an alienware for my future laptop .

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ May 17 2011, 10:47 AM)
Yea... I feel the same way too bro  sad.gif
I just hope that there's so many reports of issues merely because of the popularity of these laptops  smile.gif

Added on May 17, 2011, 10:48 am

It doesn't have overheat issues. Its just hot  nod.gif
And the fan noise is very, very loud. There's a Youtube video just to show how loud it is  laugh.gif
The right palm rest will get hot after some time but I guess its okay since we seldom use the arrow keys and use mouse instead  nod.gif
*
well, my M17x has a very loud fan, and so sometimes i can hear it, but it never annoys me anyway...and the right palm rest did not get hot when i'm playing games on it, unlike my previous laptops where it gets REALLY hot at that spot, and my palms sweat easily (hell, i sweat easily overall), so kinda left a mark there on my old laptop..xD

but overall, i have no complains on my laptop, other than the speaker issue, which the engineer would come tomorrow and fix it for me! biggrin.gif

yea, means i have to take half day off from work actually....the only shitty part about Dell's service is that they could only come during the weekdays....so lame!

QUOTE(jedi_dc @ May 17 2011, 11:59 AM)
Cool! thanks for ur swift reply! smile.gif

Fan noise? That'll not be a problem tongue.gif
I believe that i read somewhere, the fan noise issue will be resolved in the upcoming driver updates?

Another thing is the Graphic card ,

Does the Nvidia Optimus work well?

I've heard it has some issues sometimes ,

I'm on an ATI switchable graphics notebook now , serves me very well , as i can switch whenever i want smile.gif

Comparing Nvidia with ATI alienware notebooks, which is better in your opinion guys? smile.gif
*
well, if you read a few pages back, someone told me that Nvidia is stable, and if you're looking for raw power it's the Ati, but you can check NBR for more info on the GC...

My hunting mission is a failure for today. Went to Sham Shui Po's computer district, found 1 Dell shop which sells it (!!), but it's only upon order for 2 weeks. Another retailer there sold m11x, but only the R2 version. Also went to Mongkok's Dell shop, unfortunately, 3 weeks for the order to come..
*
it's all the same bro....Dell doesn't really keep ex-stocks for their alienware brand, unlike the XPS systems where it should be slightly more acceptable for most consumers, as the price between AW and XPS differs quite a bit i think....

It's quite disappointing, they'd have more buyers if they keep stock of a few units at least  doh.gif  I was actually not relying on the Dell shops, but more of hoping that other retailers would have it, like the one I found which carried the R2. Unfortunately, out of all the shops I went through, it's only that 1 non-Dell retailer that even carried Alienware.
*
hmm, i dunno...i think selling it online works for them as well...i think it's the only drawback for a system that custom makes your items.

i worked in a custom fabricator for decorative items before, so i understand your frustration, as does with most of my customers, but some customers don't mind the wait, as long as they manage to get something they want, provided with the right price of course smile.gif

@ DocLem: i feel your pain somehow...but hopefully you can get 1 soon...smile.gif

Yeah, the 1st review on the M14x by laptopmag did mentioned that Dell was aware of the fan noise  nod.gif
But if they're going to resort to lowering the fan rpm to reduce the noise.... I don't think its a good idea since that will mean poorer cooling as well  sad.gif

Nvidia Optimus will decide to go on a rampage from time to time, but nothing too much to handle  laugh.gif
Newer notebooks with AMD GPUs have Hybrid GPU switching nowadays, which is also auto  sweat.gif But its good to see some manufacturers still providing manual switches for GPU- switching despite already having the automatic GPU-switching features  nod.gif

Added on May 17, 2011, 11:17 pm

Well, the thing about the fan is that its quiet when one is not doing any intensive stuff, so its acceptable...
As for it being very audible during gaming, for me I think its acceptable.... you can't have the best of both worlds...
Cool temperatures + Small chassis (relative to desktops) + Quiet fan don't come together    sad.gif
Understand what you meant bro> My old Toshiba M100 had 2 "palms" on the palm rest due to my "corrosive" sweat haha  laugh.gif
*
i dun mind the loud noise of the fan actually...since i'm mostly on headphones, so i can't listen to what's going on outside...(i've even had several missed calls which i should have picked up...xD).

and high five for our "palms" imprinted on our old laptops...that's something you can't get anywhere, LOL xD

Reminds me of my 2 high-five palms on my Dell Inspiron 1420 with the defective nVidia Geforce 8400M GS.

Just noticed that your rig has almost the same specs as my Sager. Both also 17.3 inch.

How's the feel on the palm rest of M17X-R3 during gaming, still hot till your hand sweats?
*
nope, there's no heat on the palm rest....hence, why i'm enjoying right now...haha
