Compound I'd to aide you in acheiving a gloss finish. It should go like this

Gloss coat> coarse compount > fine > finish

gloss coat should be a thicker coat, as essentially, compound is like a very high grit sandpaper.

actually, doing that increases the risk of frosting. best thing for you is to only assemble once everything is finished.
