Have few transactions where the posting and transaction date is the same. The effective rate almost same but in MBB internet banking we do not have the details down to hour and minute. Else we can have more accurate effective rate when using MBB 2 Amex

i am currently holding 3 CC, if were to use for foreign transaction, which would be the better choice?

a) OCBC Ti (Master)
b) M2C Visa + AMEX (dont take 5% cashback into account as I will maxed it every month via bills)
c) SC Plat (Master)

Mastercards give generally better rates. But you have to take into account Amex's 2% from 5x points vs your other cards benefits.

Does that mean the 5x TP alone will offset the rest of my cards?

This time around, AMEX foreign trnx cost 2.7%, Visa is 1.5%. 5x TP = 2% so unless you use your AMEX on weekend, you have to pay foreign trnx fee.

Actually the Visa's cost is very variable depending on bank and card. Almost all of them have cost varying from 1.5% to 2.5%. Only Watami visa is typically around 1%. I have various visa's and a few masters, i keep track of all the transaction costs recently. Masters range from 1% to 2%.

You really need to experiment and see.

I checked with Maybank on online charges (EURO), I was told the exchange rate used when they charge is based on the "Currency notes Selling", which is higher than the "Selling TT/OD" rate.

Is this your actual experience? I double checked with the guy to check with his supervisor to confirm this and he said they use the currency notes selling rate. If this is the case, it may be better to use bank that use the normal selling TT/OD rate.

Please share your experience...

Alliance Visa Infinite
Transaction Date: 24-Aug-2014
Posting Date: 26-Aug-2014

Conversion rate: 0.03218
Visa published rate: 0.03054

Difference: 5.37%???

This transaction is to book a hotel in Japan. I called to customer service and they say for online booking JPY, they will convert to USD, then only subsequently will convert back to MYR. That why making it so high. Is that true?

But 5.37% conversion is really very high!

Your calculations are wrong, and the visa published rate used is also wrong.

Your conversion rate should be 0.03108, and visa publish rate is 0.03058 (26/8/14)
Correct difference is only around 1.6%, similar to what I'm getting with my Alliance Visa Infinite.

1.6% is still acceptable as we can get 5X points.

hi i am planning to go to Jakarta soon....i plan to book my hotel, food and a few other things from here.... so the charges will be in usd or rupiah.....may i know which CC gives a good conversion rate and rebates.....i have
hlb wise, maybank 2 card amex and visa, aeon watami, ocbc titanium, hsbc amanah mpower visa....

from what i read here i think aeon watami gives the best conversion but i usually max out the 3% rebate.....i was just wondering whether OCBC titanium or HSBC with their 1% cash back is more worth it than AEON Watami conversion rate excluding the 3% cashback....

any comments..thanxs..
