I would like to ask sifu who always buy air asia tickets. I bought one way air asia ticket with the point of departure from overseas e.g. gold coast. i've changed the currency to RM however when I want to submit my credit card details it still used the home currency Aud. therefore end up paying Aud (the reason I want to use RM is because their rate look cheaper).

Is this normal e.g. they will charge based on the currency of the point of departure?

Amex slap on an additional 2.5% charge so only worthwhile if you spend on weekends (with 5% rebate)

Else always stick to master / visa

Bro, your Alliance MC rate not bad.

And here's my Maybank 2 AMEX versus Maybank Visa Infinite posted at my article titled MORE A Little Bit Of This And A Little Bit Of That.

Maybankard 2 Cards AMEX:
Transaction Date 2nd Feb 2014
Posting Date 4th Feb 2014
AUD21.75 - RM 65.52
Conversion Rate: 3.012413

Maybank Visa Infinite
Transaction Date 2nd Feb 2014
Posting Date 3rd Feb 2014
AUD35.00 - RM105.76
Conversion Rate: 3.02171428

The above 2 transactions were performed minutes apart at the same merchant in the late morning but take note of the Posting Dates.

Maybank Visa Infinite
Transaction Date 2nd Feb 2014
Posting Date 4th Feb 2014
AUD120.00 - RM367.87
Conversion Rate: 3.06558

Above transaction was performed in the late afternoon.

Look at the Maybank VI conversion rates of 3.02171428 and 3.06558 vs AMEX's 3.02171428!!!

Too bad I only used my Maybankard 2 AMEX once in Melbourne, the next trip, I must go use it more often and see if the AMEX's overseas conversion rates are consistently lower than the Maybank Visa's rates. If it is lower, then I must seriously consider getting the Maybank 2 Cards Premier like I mentioned in my above said article.

If the merchant accepts AMEX, then Maybankard 2 AMEX as you get 5X TP, else MBB 2 MC.

bro u can search my post back last year, my gf enjoyed quite abit of discounts 5% with visa card in Japan when she went there back in June 2013. Not sure what's the hype about visa in Japan.

I also reported that she got very low conversion rate with AEON card, some members report high exchange rate but my experience so far with them has been good, sometimes lower than rate published by visa and at times exactly 1% charge imposed only.

namh's above transaction posted on Wednesday which was Public Holiday - unless Indonesia not a public holiday.

Same as CoffeeDude transaction posted on 16 January which falls on a Thursday where both effective rate higher than Visa's.
You might just be right, AEON cards go haywire on weekends, hahaha. But your effective rate was not super low but near spot rate whereas bear bear's USD/MYR rate was really unbelievable.

Let's see more results, everyone - please spread your transactions with your AEON cards to fall on weekdays and weekends.

I wonder the weekend 5% cash back for amex2 card depends on your posting or transaction date? smile.gif

Since Maybank had quite significant increase on their change rate admin fees (2-2.5 %) is it worth now to consider to use Amex (if the shop accept)? at least I can get 5 TP. anyone has used HLB Matta platinum card in overseas as they said can get 1% rebate (= to ocbc titanium)?
