Southern part of Penang state to be developed, hopefully the spillover impact can be felt in Perak as well.

QUOTE(Kampung2005 @ Apr 19 2011, 03:27 PM) Southern part of Penang state to be developed, hopefully the spillover impact can be felt in Perak as well. Penang's second bridge estimated at a whooping RM2.8 billion, measuring 37 km will connect Batu Kawan in Seberang Prai to Batu Muang on the main island. It would be a folly for me to see the needs for more roads and bridges to add to the congestion (be it in the island or mainland)...It's never ending story. Come on, the bottle necking effect can be seen in Kuala Lumpur. Works been done to widen the roads, fly-overs zig-zagging here and there but in the end, the receiving end will be the same. Different routes but destination remains. When will this end? It's scheduled for completion in 2011, however, when 2012, everything will be destroyed. QUOTE(Kampung2005 @ Apr 19 2011, 03:17 PM) Personally... I feel that there won't be much impact for another 10 years.Talking about development of the South side of the Island... seriously... what kind of development are we looking at? Mah Sing's development is there but that would take 10 years to complete (if it even takes off) further after they sold out all those 3-storey houses and Sunway has a few developments nearby as well. Its a good thing though... because right now, Penang is 'over-booming' with commerce when clearly the potential isn't there nor is it ready yet. New shopping malls are opening when clearly a few has flopped and some new ones are trying so hard to draw foot traffic over. What's the 'real' population of Penang? Taking into consideration that LGE claims its only 6% of the whole population... I would say that it's approximately 678,000. How much is being spent on a bridge for some of the 678,000 people who I dare say 70-80% of them wouldn't even use. I learned one thing here is that, Islanders rarely go to the mainland. Will it draw more tourist to Penang? Highly unlikely. Seriously.. what is there to do in Penang? The whole UNESCO heritage thingy? It all looks half baked. I heard an airline recently stopped its flights from Penang to some country (not sure if it was some south china city or was it macau?) Yes, I know Penang Airport is undergoing some renovation but how's that facelift gonna bring more tourist to Penang? Honestly, I still think the whole 2nd bridge thing is a waste of money. Who will use it? Folks coming in from the South might... not only to escape the possible jam cos the access to the current bridge has been cramped into a single lane before it spreads out to multiple lanes (right before the toll) but to try out... then again, it really doesn't solve any congestion issues on the island. What would be better / should be improved upon? - Improving the roads and building more highways for better access. - Bring in more jobs/work so people will move over here to work. Overall, I must say that after 3+ years here... Penang has a much better quality of living... to a certain extend. - Make homes more affordable. Houses are by the millions and condos (even leasehold ones) are priced at RM500k and above. It's a bit extreme... Its not even HK or Singapore and they're trying so hard... whose to blame? Developers? Probably.. they're here to make a quick buck and get the heck out of dodge. Local developers however seemed better and from what I heard, do contribute to the state by building highways, etc. |

Good for transporting export manufacturing goods. Can expect an increase in FDI and opening of plants at Batu Kawan.
Also, potential linkup with Perak's manufacturing hub due to nearer distance. |

QUOTE(kokokranc @ Apr 19 2011, 04:31 PM) Bodo la gamen. they think adding more roads will end the massive traffic standstill? That was to Macau.just go and improve our public transport system la asswipes! makan gaji buta town planner ni Penang needs to have better public transport. However, improving public transport while crucial for Penang, will only solve one part of the problem. However, in my opinion, Penang still need to have second link, not just for growing vehicle number, but what about freight? Lorries etc. Long time ago, CAP suggested that the new bridge should only be built for mass transit, but at the end, Penang industrial engine is mostly in Bayan Lepas, especially for EnE, you need to have alternative link. At the moment, traffic number suggests that there is 64,000 vehicles travelling on the first bridge alone. One thing I do agree though, that with the second bridge, existing arterial roads need to be widened so as to prevent "bottleneck" effect.
