Just got back from watching Thor in the theaters.

The LFE on this one is going to be phenomenal when it hits BD for sure!

Bro, I read that normal cinemas only can hit until 30hz right? But they offset this putting more quantity on it?

So judging from your impressions of Thor, do u think it's going to upstage Tron Legacy in terms of LFE?

Tron Legacy's LFE was pretty insane for sure bro...my f12 moved a couple of inches on the floor.

I can imagine your twin f15s doing some serious damage on this one  thumbup.gif
*
Have not watched Tron Legacy as yet. Will try to check it out.

U're right the theaters have high output around 30Hz. However, the scenes indicate that the LFE mix is very aggresive.

u guys familiar with the Akira BD?  how to ensure i can playback the 5.1 24/192 TrueHD track?  i am currently upgrading my 2ch system to ht, so have to make sure i can playback this title.

thanks,
wps

Check ur AVR. I am pretty sure Onkyo plays it fine. The older ones could not apply Audyssey to these kinds of tracks, the newer ones can.

i don't have avr or brp yet.  can the denon 4311 or marantz av7005 decode the track?  or is it player dependent?

thanks,
wps

If u r bitsreaming, then no real issue. I guess the 4311 shd have no problem, no so sure of the marantz as their implementation has always been different.

Some players can decode internally if u want to send out PCM as well. I am not sure but I think the Oppo does not have a problem if I remember correctly.

Anyone encounter this problem for both Avatar & Avatar Extended BDMV/BDISO? after the first time I played the movie, I can't play the movie anymore, it's always stuck at "Resume Playback - Yes or No"
*
I think u need to post this in the Dune thread if u use the Dune...

The longest aspect ratio I have ever seen. 2.75:1  shocking.gif

I believe its the right aspect ratio as it was the camera used for really wide screen....

In our screens it will indeed look small.

Watched another classic earlier today, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai..

Video , colors looks balanced, details look great. Healthy grain throughout film, contrast boost..some scenes looks sharp , YRF did better off REM, certainly not the classy authoring..

Sound , DTS HD MA looks alright for a classic film, nothing to moan about though..except some subtitle issue during some tracks..

Should you be a SRK fan, this is a decent release to have..authoring needs improvisation.
*
The DTS HDMA track is well balanced compared to most Hindi movies, especially in the LFE section.

The colour tones were slightly on the warm side, but I realise most of the older Hindi movies tend to be on the warm side anyway.

I had the YRF version (bought together with Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham) and I believe you mean that the subtitles during songs sometimes missing?

I am actually grateful that YRF at least continues to re-release old titles and looks like the masters are still in decent shape to allow for BD.

I do sincerely hope that some of the old P.Ramlee classics (I believe Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka hv the prints) are released one day in BD.

Have not watched a complete movie in my set for some time due to recalibrating my system with the new BDP and some adjustments. Finally, watched a movie at long last.

Review:

Prince of Persia : Sands of Time

Movie :
Popcorn flick in the desert! One watchable chick, one "hot" male actor (that the ladies will like), a bad guys, a fast moving action movie with lots of eye catching CGI and plenty of action....I felt the movie was watchable, slightly long in some places, could have been shortened by at least 30mins and still would not have missed much. Lead Jake Gyllenhaal was miscast in my mind (I used to play the Prince of Persia computer game what seemed like a long time ago) and the jumping and all that is well captured in the film, unfortunately Jake does not carry the role consistently. Gemma Arteton was not too great either, the role not being entirely convincing, but passable with decent looks. Don't get me wrong, its not bad by any means, its just a typical popcorn flick that u shd not take seriously. 3/5 (although my wife felt it shd be a 4/5)

PQ :
Would have to give it 4.5. The only problem I found was that the blacks were crushed at some places and while it seems to be the director's intention, I shd warn that the grain is ever present (no pun intended!). The colour tones are skewed golden yellow mostly. Still very good details and I did not ever detect any EE, DNR etc..

SQ:
I was torn between 5/5 or 4.5/5. The LFE is a real treat, many many occasions to unleash low frequency high SPL moments. Panning is great, sound scape is wide and surrounds are very very active. Dialogue is clear...No real complaints actually.

Nice movie to spend 2 hrs of non serious fun! Nothing more than that....

dude. how is your OPPO working?
*
Oppo is great. There are subtle differences between the 93 and the 83. I am using dual HDMI outs, 1 HDMI direct to display (bypassing any AVR so the signal chain is kept as clean as possible - however I do have a Video EQ Pro in between), 1 to the AVR.

It plays my backups very well as well.

actually i am using dual hdmi out too, 1 to my amp then projector, the other to lcd, but some how due to my set up, only 1 has sound.

beside my oppo 93 always causing my projector hang (green /spark) then no picture.

i am sure expert like u after calibration can produce better pic/sound than mine.

May I know how much OPPO 93 now? or the old model 83? worth to get 83 now? or straight to 93?
*
OT but the 93 is USD499 if u get from the US, SGD990 (region free) if u get it from Spore and I believe someone was selling it in KL for RM2300 with the region free mod.

The 83 is discontinued but I know some people are selling theirs used from SGD500 and above.

BD Review: The Incredibles

Movie:
One of my Pixar favourites, so nothing much to say. Great simple storyline by Brad Bird, great execution. My kids have watched the DVD countless times, as the mkv 1080p broadcast transfer that I had "obtained". Still they sat through the whole movie (for the 100th time I think!), so that shd say enuf. Both the 5yr old and the 8yr old were thoroughly entertained as was I. I would easily rate it 5/5 as it will please both kids and adults with its storyline.

PQ:
If this is not 5/5 in someones book, not sure what is. I tried to detect banding and any artefacts but could not (or maybe it was there but not obvious). Fantastically detailed transfer and as usual the transfer is impeccable.

AQ:
Also a 5/5 in my books. Great surrounds, LFE potent and all round well balanced. Its a DTS HD MA (ES) so all 7 channels are used. Pans are great, sound staging is wide, and the audio mix is not too heavy. Nothing to moan about, LFE is both loud when necessary and low if called for.

Great movie, good entertainment value and replay value in my household at least. And to top it off, a fantastic transfer.

BD Review: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Movie:
4/5 I am really late in watching this as I missed this theatretically, bought the BD a long time ago, but did not want to watch it till I had the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows BD to watch next. I found this a much better movie than the Order of the Phoenix. Its much darker and it seems to set the stage very well for the finale. Movie delves deeper into the character's and the emotional sides. I hv not read the books, so I am not sure if its any different from it.

PQ:
4/5 Very good transfer. I did not catch any EE, DNR per se. There is havy grain throughout. Some black crush night during dark scenes, but I am pretty sure its intentional.

AQ:
4.5/5 An agressive mix especially for the surrounds. The LFE is constant throughout to add to the ambiance in the soundtrack and for the scenes. Not overly elaborate but exciting to watch. The score is not as spectacular but its well done.

I enjoy the HP series so I kinda think that this is one of the best of the franchise.

BD Movie Review : You Again

Movie:
Family, comedy with some romance thrown in. I would rate it 2.5/5. Have watched better rom coms (500Days of Summer, Juno etc). Story was so so, predictable, acting was ok. Its a chick click, some nice faces to keep me interested for about 1hr. Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver were watchable (barely). If u want a simple and light way to spend 1hr 45mins (a little too long if u ask me), this is a perfect saturday afternon flick. Safe to watch with the kids, no swearing, no nudity etc... Not that great as my wife who is a rom com fan was also not too impressed.

PQ:
4/5 Nothing to shout about, nothin to moan about either

AQ:
Frontal heavy, dialogue driven. Again 3.5/5 nothing for nothing against!

In my opinion a waste of 1hr 45mins for me, but heck my wife had a couple of laughs... smile.gif

True...Still when u r married, there are times that u oblige becoz ur significant other likes different kinds of movies.

My wife is not bad, she enjoys movies and does not question my HT/BD/Music expenditure, so once in a while I'm more than ok with watching a movie that I don't quite like.

I received the Chronicles of Narnia : The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (3Disc Edition)

I'm appaled at the design of the blu ray holder.

It has a slipcover, a box that holds all discs, yet, there is no proper holder for 2 of the disc, they slot into cardboard sleeves. Recipe for disaster with kids in the house!

Can't wait to get rid of it.

Also got the TrueGrit HMV exclusive steel when I was in UK, pretty good steel that one.

Just grabbed 3 BD's from B&N with Express Courier for 63.32. Batman Begins Limited Gift Set, John Mayer: Where the Light Is, AC/DC: Let There Be Rock. Discounted at 27.06. Buy 2 Free 1 ;o)
*
AC/DC Let there be Rock is a class act....those guys might be old, but they still rock. Malcolm's voice is starting to show but its still very very good.

Edit: Got the brother's mixed up.
