When I connect my PC with Starbucks(or any public wifi), how can I protect my PC from hackers, since the network is open.
I have installed with: Avast Free AV + Zone Alarm Free Firewall.
But, I read somewhere that firewall will not prevent hackers when connected in open network.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Any software that can protect my PC when connected to public wifi?

no matter how good is ur avast + zonealarm, ppl still can sniff /capture in & out data because its a public network. u just prevent ppl from accessing disk from your computer.
u want safe, u work from home. end of story

securing public access point is already a problem. Plus, after firesheep shows its 1st appearance, more security issues popped out.
working from home is also a problem if some nasty guy in your neighborhood knows how to use aircrack.

QUOTE(lucidlts @ Apr 19 2011, 06:22 PM) securing public access point is already a problem. The reason I start this thread is bcos of firesheep, and I found VPN is the best way to bypass its snooping.

Just an extra information here.. You can use Blacksheep to detect when Firesheep is hijacking your session. Firesheep accesses your Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter and other logins through cookies — Blacksheep subverts this by tricking Firesheep with a fake login cookie and alerting the user when Firesheep is detected, displaying the IP address of the person using it (see below), and warning the user to log off. Get it here: http://research.zscaler.com/2010/11/blacks...-firesheep.html
