The only difference between PQ of SD channel between old and byond is where the video stream is upscaled. if use HDMI cable byond will do the scaling and if use composite/component cable, the TV will do the scaling.
As i remember when byond was installed in my house a year ago, the installer checks the serial number of the decoder to make sure the old decoder serial number is matching with the serial number in their system
