Fyi & everyone else wondering abt PQ of Astro SD & HD broadcasts, I'm only using a "HD Ready" LED TV...however PQ is now even better than b4 when subscribed only to SD channels!! For BOTH HD & SD!! Believe me!! rclxms.gif thumbup.gif

So really kenot understand why so many are complaining re poor PQ reception of SD shows... rolleyes.gif

Btw am using PVR... whistling.gif

ps. Probably poor PQ of SD viewing caused by TOO LARGE screens??? Our std residential "halls" are too small for large TVs! Try sitting much farther away fr TV...mayb Google for minimum viewing distance? wink.gif

Had Astro Max since they first offered and one of the first people to go for B.yond PVR.

Couple of bad experiences.

1. Some of the time recorded show will hang (freeze). Solution is reboot and fast forward past the time mark where it hangs and its fine. Yes you can reboot the setup box.
2. Picture quality on HD is only good on some shows not every HD show. This is a fact using a number of original DVDs played on the same TV as comparison (HDMI connection). Don't get me started by comparing with BR movies cos that is even worse in comparison.
3. Sound quality on most shows is not 5.1. My amplifier system will show the audio feed type (and the Astro feed goes into the amp via HDMI first and then out to the TV via HDMI). On some HD shows the sub-woofer needs to be re-tuned due to some low level sounds issues. Don't have any of these issues when playing DVD or BR. Could be Astro intentionally boost this to give standard sound via TV some punch to compensate for lack of actual woofer.

Conclusion - picture quality overall leaves much to be desired. As a comparison IPTV from Unifi even non-HD channels look almost as good (Bloomberg on IPTV is better than Bloomberg on Astro) and the HD ones are simply excellent every time. Astro needs to buck up on image quality and am pretty sure they are aware of these. Maybe technical constraints they are not saying.

Assthrow Failed is going to show chinese movie - Wu Xia which is more than 1 month old from the cinema.  Where got 2 weeks right after premier screening from the cinema as earlier promised?  Still want to charge RM15 + 6% GST for so old movie?  Who would be those "kambing" subscribers?

Is that part of the Superpack3 or something new?

Agreed. Shows are quite cheesy and nothing interesting despite paying a lot for having most of the packs subscribed. Time will tell but I am half contemplating canceling Astro as the contract period is over.

I connect my Byond to my receiver amp which have Anchor Bay chip which upscales SD to HD 1080p/i to my full HD TV. Although upscaling the SD channels will never be good, at least the pic quality is much much better than direct connection from Byond to TV. Also, I will also get dolby 5.1 surround for HD channels using my amp. The surround audio from the asssthrow HD channels is not the best quality but at least better than the stereo PCM quality from the SD channels.

For people who recommend people to subscribe to Telekom Unifi or Astro Byond IPTV, or make audio/video quality comparisons between UniFi SD and Astro SD, there is one important thing that they sometimes did not mention clearly. Such services are NOT NATIONWIDE and available only to Klang Valley and a few other BIG towns !! Even in Klang Valley, not all areas have coverage ! People like me in central Pahang and most of the country can only dream and live in fantasy hoping that it may be available in "wawasan" 2020  or NEVER ! So what choice do most people in the entire country have ? Asssthrow or "illegal" satellite decoder+dish options only. Illegal only because our government wants to protect Asssthrow.

Couple of comments:-

1. Not all HD shows are running DD 5.1 audio

2. Can you elaborate how you upscale SD video feeds? If you connect via HDMI to your receiver amp would that be just pass through as the feed is already 1080i?

Unless you are running a separate connection for SD feed (component cable for video and optical for audio?) and selecting that manually when viewing SD channels and letting your amp's ABT chip doing the upscaling? There is a slight improvement with Astro Max but not with B.yond from my quick tests last year which is the reason I only run a single HDMI connection. Interesting to hear about your experiences.

I can confirm that the video quality for some shows are far better than other shows (SD channels). It is the quality or rather inconsistency from Astro that is causing comments with respect to Unifi. For example compare Bloomberg on Astro and Bloomberg on Unifi.

3. Granted that Unifi is not available everywhere but your point about "did not mention clearly"? The posts are only valid if you have the option of either. If you have no choice then its just fyi biggrin.gif

those with PVR, do you have black tape wrapped around the F connectors at the LNB? mine are not wrapped. i recall that the tape is used for waterproofing. but i called my installer and he said that it is not necessary. hmmm....

Yes

Because the metal part of the connector can give you a slight electrical shock biggrin.gif

guys, im wondering how you guys paired astro byond HDMi to TV, but output audio to my Home Theatre system..

how do you guys configure this?? understood that HDMI has audio in it. But if i connect it to my LED TV, the audio out will use TV speaker instead of my sound system right??

so, i need to audio out from Astro to my sound system amp??

please kindly advise.

thanks!!

Depends on your TV whether it can audio out and what formats supported. Also the audio (co-ax or optical - cannot remember which) may be the other option.

Somebody may be able to help you more.

thanks bro.

this means the TV will redirect the audio from HDMI to Home Theatre via the optical cable?

this means the audio out all from TV itself. does the Home Theatre sound decoders to process the audio, or its the TV that's processing the audio??

how about if i buy this Sony SoundBar: http://www.sony.com.my/product/ht-ct150

it has 3 HDMI input. Both Bluray and Astro B.yond output to this Soundbar, then 1 HDMI output to TV. it works the same way too right??

thanks!

You may be better off buying a AV Receiver (AVR) depending on your budget.

My setup Astro (HDMI) > Yahama AV (HDMI) > TV
Blue-Ray (HDMI) > Yahama AV
etc

One single connection to the TV from AVR. Non-hd content is upscaled at the AVR end. TV are not too great with upscaling usually.

For now , I am planning to buy a home theatre to connect to the Astro Beyond. So I was wondering, If I purchase a HDMI splitter 1*2 ,will it do the work ? So basically ,the connection would be , the Home Theatre connect to HDMI splitter , LCD TV connect to HDMI splitter , and connect it to the Astro Beyond ? Do I need to provide some setting as well ?
Kindly guide and shed some light guys !! Thanks for all the in put in advance. =)

Check your astro setup box. If you can output audio via coaxial or optical that is probably going to be cheaper. Not that Astro audio are that awesome. Most of the time its just stereo and DD 5.1 for some (not all) HD Content.

hi Veejay,

i am referring to all channels between SD and HD...for me, the difference is very obvious, i need to double my volume for SD channels.

i thought it was my TV problem that was while i posted the question.

lucky you that you do not have the problem.
*
Same here. And I am routing Astro via my AVR before the TV. Need to adjust volume when switching SD / HD

hmmm...interesting....I'm using Panny, and my volume now is at 20..and I dont hear much different in the level when I switch between SD and HD.

Is your Panny capable of 5.1 DD? Thats what I suspect is part of the change in volume.
