If Astro "really" have bandwidth issue, wouldn't be nice for Astro to "rent" other satellite bandwidth? hmm.gif
*
If the rented satellite is not in the same place as MEASAT satellite is, we have to realign our dish...

I give Astro two choices:
1. Change the codec and decoder
2. Pressure MEASAT to launch another satellite or give existing transponder to Astro.

Same here. In the first place, it was hard to get channel 514. I had to go to MENU > SATELLITE SIGNAL > DOWNLOAD CHANNEL ( O K ) to watch The Wedding. Today, it said it's not in my subscription! I went back to perform the same routine, MENU > SATELLITE SIGNAL > DOWNLOAD CHANNEL ( O K ) but 514 went absolutely missing and invisible!

WHY?

Bro, I think they are indeed changing codec. No other reason for them to force subscribers to switch to B.yond box otherwise (in case you missed out on the news- now it's mandatory for everyone to get a B.yond decoder. They're going house to house changing decoder and dish if necessary).

Although, the full codec switch would most likely come shortly only after all the decoders have been switched. That would still be months away....

There's a third option for them: make IPTV mode work over all broadband links like DETV and deliver at least on-demand content over that. If need allow device to piggyback over Maxis 3G (free 3G dongle that plugs into front USB port and only connects to special AP for Astro use over Maxis airwave). That way they can free out at least two dozen channels of the satellite. Or switch to IPTV completely with Maxis 3G dongle (or Maxis LTE once that launched). HSPA+ can do 14.4Mbps, enough for one HDTV stream. LTE can fly at 100Mbps. And if they use UDP Multicast, hardly any bandwidth will be used. Again, this will require that their B.yond switch plan is complete. Which is still months away.

I hope they regret selling off MEASAT 1 to South Africa and completely phasing out MEASAT 2.

and whats the usb slot in front for??

and it seems that everyone have to change to the byond decoder or you will be charged for the decoder if your current service(old decoder) is cut off... deng~

1. I don't know about that.
2. USB Slot is for the External HDD for PVR recording.
3. Dunno, there is no official announcement from Astrow...

I heard even in standby it uses 20W ,so I switch off my byond every night

putting byond in standby is to facilitate firmware update, so may be you can let it in standby during the day hours

They have a list of people who still haven't upgraded to B.yond and is calling one by one. My aunt called them and they confirm that the switch must take place, and her name is still further down on the list and they will eventually get to her if she hadn't call them first.

Yeah, I unsub oredi, but my few of my aunts and uncles still subscribe to Astro.

Never heard of this. I call bull. Especially since you can force FW upgrade from front panel.

Not sure about the penalty if you change decoder only after the change window is over, but yes, already confirm with Astro CS that must change decoder. Hopefully it's to facilitate Azrin Kiko's wish of codec+transport change.

If the rented satellite is not in the same place as MEASAT satellite is, we have to realign our dish...
Or they could just start deploying a superdish...

Hi neb, do you have any experience whether if I switch off the PVR set at night then switch on the next morning, will my scheduled recording will be lost? sweat.gif
I always wanted to turn if off at night because I find it is too hot!

Hi RAMChYLD, can you tell us how to do "force FW upgrade"? tongue.gif
I believe this will come in handy when we need to do this in future... blush.gif

Just put the laptop fan below the byond and use the usb port to power it.

From my memories, you'll just have to press the power button -> ch+ -> ch- in sequence in fast pace, the decoder will reboots and checks for sw update

Ah, correct, that's another reason to leave the decoder on 24/7. If you turn off the decoder, then recording cannot take place for late night shows tongue.gif

Kiko's advice is about right, although I remember that you need to reboot the decoder first and quickly press that while it's starting up instead. And I think it was power button -> ch- -> ch+ instead. I'm not 100% sure either. tongue.gif

hi guys, i have problem with the decoder set now. the screen will go completely blank after boot up whenever there is smart card inside, if i remove the card from the decoder, astro byond menu comes back but asking to put in the card, once the card is in, blank screen all over again, why uh?
*
Most like either your card or the card reader on board. You would need to check with the technical center

What I was told is, in order to get beyong Hardware (box and disk), you need to upgrade from Astro to Byond and subscribe to HD for a year (RM20) after that you could cancel the HD.

You cant upgrade fro Astro to non HD Byond.

If U are a non beyond customer and want to upgrade of course u need to subscribe to HD cos thats wat the intention is. But if astro changes your decorder to Beyond then HD services is optional. Many of my friends boxes were phased out like this ,they hv the beyond box but did not take HD services.Thats why now u see many adverts on HD clarity and that a hdtv wld not allow HD just like that, unless u have Beyond HD services! rolleyes.gif
