hi all Sifus, I am new to HIFI, I have a set of HiVi Swans M200MKII and M50W, but one is not good at bass and one is not good at mid/high. So I plan to buy a set of decent bookshelf speakers, budget around MYR1000, I intend to use a T-amp, Lepai 2020A to drive it. Can sifus gives some suggestion to me? Thanks biggrin.gif

oh really, sound great. Recently I have facing some issues with my powerful active speakers, in some environment there is resonance weewangwang problem, very strong in some tracks, maybe will need your help to justify using the e-ls encore + lepai amp?

what is the name of the song that having resonance prob? maybe i can try with my setup
Later i'll do some review smile.gif

I'll upload the track for you to test it, somehow I think it is more serious happening in a room listening rather in front of PC desktop listening, as in a room, I have to put the speakers at corner and my room is not that big too, suspect some material (e.g. the wall) is causing the resonance problem. The bass vibration and stay there quite hurt to ears sad.gif

I bring back the speakers to test at KL, it seem resonance is very little, not as serious as I am listening in my hometown room, hmm hmm.gif

I am planning to form a Hi-Fi set at my hometown medium room, it's not close field listening, 1 meter or more from the speakers, I currently have the following items in hand:

- HTC One (M8) will be used as temporary players until I get better player, I would like to emphasize on few things for audio player, first will be sound quality, second it must be able to at least play audio files in random shuffle order, best if it can play wide variety of file formats at least include mp3, ape, wav, and flac. Though ac3 files will be hard to be played?

- Lepai Tripath TA2020 Class T Mini Amplifier will be used to drive the speakers until I got a better unit
- XLS Encore bookshelf speakers, a very flexible and easy to driver speakers, the speakers will be placed where the back is window curtain
- Speakers stand, any recommendations?
- Speaker cables, I will use thin Edifier standard copper cable

Also, I'm having difficulty to find a clear difference between stereo amplifier, tube amplifier, integrated amplifier, preamp, cd player, and AV receiver, though I have the following to be buy list in mind:

Topping TP60 Class T Stereo Amplifier - RM600.00, this is most probably the best bang for buck you can get, though there are some reviews claiming that tube amplifier sound 9 streets ahead of T-amp? Is this true? Anybody can give some in depth opinion?

NAD C316 BBE Integrated Amplifier - RM1,739.00, claimed to be one of the budget integrated amplifier, have enough power with good SQ, but I never use before due to the price.

Jolida Glass FX-10 Tube Amplifier - USD599, it's beautiful glass box but with only 10 watts output, but some reviews said that those watts are mighty! Also how high is the tube maintenance rate/cost?

Rega Brio-R Stereo Amplifier - USD895, I would like to know how this compare to Topping TP60?

Marantz CD6005 CD Player - £350, Most probably will go for this one, as I think there a lot features that mostly will be used like digital input, sound mode, random playback, USB playback support for mp3/aac/wma, also it eliminates the need to buy a DAC.

first off......1 meter away for the speakers is considered close
having your speakers in front of windows and curtains might be a bad thing
suggest you move the speakers out away from the rear wall at least 3 feet
your right listening distance from the speaker is almost 2 x the distance between your left and right speaker....
you can refer to Cardas golden rule too...
Thanks for your advice. I think I going to form a computer set, for DAC I will use JDS Labs ODAC with both 3.5mm/RCA output, so in short I just need to get a rocking good stereo amplifier, budget should be around 2 to 3K?

I have a friend who owns A-S700, higher end model compared to 500 series.
He told me once there was not much differences compared to TP60 except that A-S700 is slightly brighter on mid. He tested it with XLS Encore and Kef Q300.

hmm, don't know how is it compare to NAD 3020i cool2.gif

I believe in progression of science.
3020i is an old amp. I believe the modern amp should sound alike or better than old designs. This is true especially with the advancement of audio testing equipments which can help designer to build amps that deliver better and accurate sound.

I own a Teac A-X750 DC Integrated Amplifier, which was considered 1 of the best int amp in 80s (it has cd direct, which was a great deal then). I tested it out a couple year ago, it could hardly meet my taste today except my nostalgia love of it when it has served me almost 10 years, and of course, the high price I paid for it.

If you still fancy with NAD product, their NAD D 3020 Hybrid Digital Amplifier is pretty good. It is based on the Hypex class D design, which is one of the high end class d solution. I believe this sounds much better than the old 3020i.

Just my opinion, sorry if I offended NAD die hard fans.  biggrin.gif

Thanks for your experience sharing. So far planning amp in list:

Arcam FMJ A19
Marantz PM6005
Yamaha A-S501
NAD D3020

Most probably will go for Marantz hmm.gif

Pairing with monitor audio then is better to go with arcam. British made will fit british all the way smile.gif

Well, you are right, that's why I am happy that an old NAD 3020i drive Wharfedale Diamond 122 very good. But the reputable Marantz should be able to handle almost any bookshelf speakers? rolleyes.gif

Well no doubt about Marantz able to handle the speakers. Is just the sound signature will be different. Maybe you should listen to it first before deciding.

You mean warm & musical sound signature of Marantz? Which a lot ppl feel it is nice? thumbup.gif How do you like it if compare to NAD, more flat and neutral transparent taste? rolleyes.gif
