Could someone sifus out there pls help me choose a beginner's AVR and bookshelf combo just to upgrade tv sound. Its for movies and light radio listening. Planning to use 2 bookshelf speakers and maybe a subwoofer for phase 1, then add-on a central speaker in phase 2. Not going for 5.1 as this is an apartment with space constraints. Budget for the AVR is RM2k and another RM1K for the bookshelves. Thanks a lot in advance.

go most of ur budget to speaker (estimate 1600-1800) then balance for avr.

Thank you ktek for your reply, I was thinking 1.2k max for speakers. But what model(s) were you thinking about in that price range?

What about treat yourself a pair of XLS Encore? You can add in a center XCS Encore when you are ready.  drool.gif

Xls encore ? Read some great reviews on it, but i'm afraid its not within my budget. Guess I need to find a suitable AVR first, and then take it from there. Do you know any budget AVr that has all the "necessary" functions in the Rm1.5-2k bracket?

i think unicorn electronics in amcorp mall are letting go some opened box but new yet discontinued mission speakers as they are no longer the distributor... rm1.2k for mv8e and rm1.8k for m34i if i am not wrong... just front floorstanders alone...

mv8e dates back a couple of years i think... but i think m34i is still listed on mission's site...

"Necessary".. honestly I am so clueless at present, thus the ''..''. So many features with a diverse nomenclature.. rclxub.gif I was hoping to define that from feedback from you guys.. wink.gif

Thank you nm7 for the info on Unicorn, will drop by and see. On that point, I'd like to reiterate that im looking for bookshelf speakers and not towers or floorstanders. I managed to find a list of speakers below 1k? from a previous posting by fx20 at https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1995757/all. The few I have picked out are :

Mission M31i, Whaderdale Diamond 10.1, Monitor Audio BR2 and Aviano 1.

Can you/anyone tell me which is preferable? Much appreciated

speakers are very preferential... it can be top notch on paper specs but if you don't like it's sound, there is no point buying it...

Agreed.

you should go ask if you can at least listen to it even though it might be connected via different amp and players... if you then think that it all sounds the same and you cannot differentiate which to buy... then you look at what is of more value  tongue.gif
a lot of things to us might be of necessary... but it might not be of necessary to you if you get what i mean... i don't think you want to spend money on un-necessary stuff...

Its a very logical approach. However. its highly improbable that I could audition more than a handful of options, hence my desire to get input from knowledgeable forumers to create a shortlist.

By necessary, im actually asking what features are really worth it and what are just hype. I understand that its subjective and highly dependant on present and future plans as well as budget.

so, at least i guess you would need to understand what can an avr do and then go from there and establish what you have in plans for it.. like how you plan to set it up... is it as simple as watching blurays with it or you have other bright ideas that you want to implement... those are factors that can play into the outcome of your choices...

Its to upgrade my existing Hdtv sound quality and have an internet radio. I watch tv (footy), very little movies and listen to light music: gospel, country and pop rock for about an hour a week. Nothing fancier.. biggrin.gif

cheers
