I'm interested in these 3 models of entry level avr.

pioneer vsx-516, vsx-517, vsx-518

which 1 is the best choice?

thank you.

Hi all sifus, i am a newbie to audiophile world and would like some recommendations from u all

Currently i am trying to build a hi-fi system with the source is my laptop, planning to get the Asus Essence One as DAC (Is it available here?) and also a bookshelves speaker as I have limited spaces.

I understand that I need to go for audition to pick the speaker myself but any recommended model for me as reference? I tend to listen to pop songs, with Celine Dion and Jacky Cheung are my best favourites. Budget can be around 2k-3k.

Besides that, do I still need a integrated amp to drive the speaker? Because I read that the Essence One already has an amp inside, but I am not sure whether it is enough to drive a bookshelves speaker.

Thanks in advance.

i would suggest u to get a avr instead of an int amp if u listen more on pop genre.
pioneer vsx-522 av receiver + wharfedale 10.1

so no need buy dac already.

i will only suggest ppl to get an int amp if the system is used for 75% music + 25% movie/gaming. u can try marantz pm6004 + wharfedale 10.1

So you mean for home theater I should get a quality AV first, but if for stereo system I need to get a quality speaker first? But it seems like it oppose to what BOTAK_WAI has mentioned.
Actually my preference is to get a good speaker first also, as someone mentioned that speaker plays the most major role (correct me if i am wrong). Any good recommendation for speaker around rm2k?

different ppl have different opinion, in audiophile world, only trust ur own audition.
no matter u r going to build an av system or stereo, u still need a pair of front speakers, so choosing speaker is the 1st step. choose the speaker u like the sound most, within ur budget.

Added on December 6, 2012, 10:13 pmthe reason i suggest u to start with the avr+speaker because it is not so difficult in pairing all the equipment to get decent sound. avr has the dac built-in, just plug any player with digital output to the avr will do.

for pure stereo, u need skill in pairing the amp, source, speaker. u can either play with a good dac or a dedicated cd player, not to mention the interconnect.

Hmm, tube got a cycle for "mood", lifespan is pretty troublesome for me to maintain, so I still prefer solid state integrated amp, currently using PM6005, the Wharfedale Denton getting better with it whistling.gif , next year will aim for amp with power around 100watts, sth like Rotel or Arcam?  brows.gif

I have only heard Denton pairing with PM6004 in KLIAV, still not enough juice for Denton brows.gif
