Silon, I hardly ever upgrade *LOL* but here quite active lah... probably because stuff is relatively cheaper
Xtremeplace, Echoloft, Yahoo sg and eBay sg are all reasonably active. Singnet classifieds used to be active until they instituted paid classifieds, now dominated by audio shops. i'm thinking of changing my Pioneer 655A (SACD/DVD-A player, region free) though |

Silon, seriously speaking - my system is strictly low-end; I have what I consider the best entry-level stuff I can get, but they are entry level. And contrary to audiophiliac tendencies, I'm perfectly happy with my system

dunno about the markup (which is govt taxes and which is distributor) but when I last asked about the Atoms they quoted me RM1070 (compared to US$189 stateside and SG$298 in Singapore) For US189 they are awesome, but RM1070 ... This post has been edited by SiriuslyCold: Dec 13 2006, 11:43 PM |

I think you need to set something on your sound card (like enable digital output or something), not the amp.

a hifi stereo system and a home theater system are different animals. sometimes they mix but.. lets take general definitions first a hifi stereo involves a source (usually CD player or turntable), stereo amplifier and two speakers. you would generally listen to music on it a home theater system involves a source (DVD player), AV amplifier (or receiver) and a surround speaker set of 5 speakers and a subwoofer. you can connect a DVD player to a stereo amplifier, but for watching movies this isn't as ... er, fun.. as a surround system. on the other hand, buying two channels is cheaper than 5.1 channels, so any budget gets you better two channel equipment compared to surround equipment. Just the added number of speakers will see to that, but also 5 channels of amplifiers cost more than 2 channels of amplification of similar quality. so everyone is always trying make a choice between having a relatively better stereo system and opposed to a not as good surround system. My choice was for a surround system - movies are a lot more fun, I get surround music, and also I can choose to play my stereo CDs with PLII all the time. With careful choosing of equipment even stereo playback sounds reasonably good though obviously not as good as if i had used the budget for 2 channels but.. I love my surround audio! Maybe you could ask around for people who will let you audition their systems - someone with a 5K stereo system and someone else with a 5K HT system and see which you would like to have. It seems obvious the 5k stereo system will sound better - probably by quite a bit - than the 5K HT system, but if you like The Beatles, get the LOVE CD+DVD-Audio discs and listen to them on both systems, I think you might choose the 5K HT system. Then as you save more money you can upgrade the components in the HT system - a better CD player, better speakers etc etc... the journey is as much fun as the destination. If you are thinking karaoke as well, then I suggest you get BMB and not regular hifi speakers. they are not made to withstand abuse (no slight on your singing ability I assure you
