what's a good buy for turntable?

budget 10k including the turntable, phono amp and necessary stuffs....plus cables

At ur level, preferably a decent setup analog rig not entry level. Cause u wann something better in a certain ways compared to ur arc CDP.

Entry level TT character
1. 2D soundstage...not much depth..like a 'wall' of sound
2. High noise floor
3. Bass lembik

Hello sifu's, may I ask if Bowers & Wilkins 685 S2 is a good choice? Is it less popular here in Malaysia because of the price mark up rendering it poor value for money?

Well depend on what you using the speaker for. B&W is a very good speaker. I won't say is not popular but they are not widely distributed. Also they are not very big in publicity, you cannot even find them in KLAV.

Just done refurbished Sony MHC-G88 with my dad, sounds pretty good through RCA. However, where do I put the surround speaker? Rear? Because its an old model I get pretty confused..also, it seems that it does have an optical out, will try it later, if it still works.

well errrrr i have to say that in hifi there's no such thing as good choice or bad choice....

more importantly is you have listened to it with a few different amps and combination.....if you find you still like it....then go for it...
music and hifi is kinda selfish environment where what suits you and what you prefer may not be the choice of anyone....

so back to B&W 685 S2.... front ported design....kinda becareful with the lower bass setup because it could be too fast and hence the lower deep bass might be a bit lacking
aluminium tweeter suggests that silver braided speaker cables may not be a good match.....
apart from that.....looks like a well designed speaker

Bros, I just checked out the Dynaudio Evidence speakers at CMY in Gurney Plaza and these are not small speakers ler but stand up over 6 feet in height and heavy as shit (over 110 kg). Didn't get to sample it as the salesgirl there thought someone wearing slippers was not capable of footing the MYR200K bill so she should not waste her precious time serving me. Maybe I'll get John from CMY Sg. Wang to set it up for me.

The one at Gurney was hooked up to a couple of Jeff Rowland amps.

Aiyah...last time my mother says study hard, I never listen but go after skirts hard mah, so always ponteng English class lah, so cannot read specs. Now koyak oredy lor... Alamak! Where got people look at specs one ler? Look at picture see nice or not first, then go testing sikit, if like then ask for the price, then later save for one century then got enuf to buy lah. 200K ler....GST alone also 12K (enuf to eat wanton mee everyday for almost 5 years!!!)

So big speakers maybe cannot buy lah cos my missus equates size with price. If she found out it cost 200K+, then surely die straight straight oredy.

How can anyone in the world be capable of pacifying their missus in the first place when buying stereo equipment ler? Mission Impossible.
Ya, I know need a lot of juice to power them but I think the Passlabs monoblocks will be sufficient. 150W of pure Class A juice per channel.

BUT.....

I have been thinking twice about getting the Passlabs cos a lot of other good equipment in the market these days:
1) Dan D'Agostino Momentum

2) MBL Reference 9008A

3) Theta Digital Prometheus

Less bulky also....

4) Passlabs XS150

heard good reviews on the MBL although i haven't got the chance to hear it in person

i have fond memories of previous MBL amps and the remind me how refined and precise one amp can make....
very clean and transparent amp....not sure if the sound character has changed since then.

That's what I am scared of when dealing with German amps. Too transparent. Never mind. I am going to HK on Monday and will test it there. Found their authorized dealer there in Mongkok - exactly where I will be staying this time (Langham Place). No authorised dealers here in Bolehland though....
