To get real punchy bass, get an amplifier with a Sub Out to a subwoofer. That will settle your bass requirements. As for hanging the speakers on the wall, I don't think it is advisable to do so. Try whatever system you have with the speakers on the ground and hanging against the wall and you will know what I mean. Lastly, whatever you do, don't get Monster cables. Over rated and expensive. If you are really set on purchasing Monster Cables, get a length of electrical cables instead. Bet you can't hear the difference.

I have no choice other choice except hanging the speakers on the wall because of my TV is hanging on the wall.
The walkway is just by the TV as shown in attachment.

Got the Bose SoundLink Colour bluetooth speaker for my daughter yesterday at Atlas Hifi in Midvalley for MYR670. While I was there, they were demonstrating the SoundTouch 30 Series II system and I was really surprised with the sound from such a small unit. Punchy bass, melodic mids and clear treble. Heavy though...but it beats the SoundTouch systems hands down.
*
You should have get the soundlink mini, it is the better choice even tho is it more expensive.
Sonos play1 sound not bad too...
I have tried playing around with sonos play1 and soundlink mini.
Soundlink mini size won my heart because of the size.

I need sifus recommendation over here.
I am looking to purchase my first hifi system with details below:

Budget: RM4000
Items: 5.1 speakers + amplifier + speaker cables

Others requirement:
- prefer punchy type of bass
- minimalist/small size design as all speaker going to hang on the wall
- 100sqft room size

Usage:
- Movie & music, source from HTPC sound card and graphic card.
- Music emphasize on vocal type
- Action movie oriented
Currently offer I get is like below with RM3900 price:
- Wharfedale DC-1HCP
- Denon amplifier
- Monters speaker cable
- Wireworld sub-woofer cable
- Installation and tuning included
*
i'd be honest with you.....mixing HT and audio in the same system is something you might consider separating

but if you insist.....you can get a 5.1 set from JBL or Q Acoustics paired with a Pioneer or Denon AV amp...quite within your budget....

in all honesty, i do find the Logitech Z906 not a bad choice for a small room.....audio is acceptable..minimalist design too

speaker cables you can find bro black octagon as he brings in good van damme speaker cables that beats the crap out of monster cable

for sub woofer cable....brand is not everything....you need a solid copper core...again...black octagon has some good diy cables....which i did a review on it

to fully enjoy 5.1, make sure your source of movie comes with the right audio and that you also have the right codec

having an additional soundcard like Asus STX 7.1 would be great....depending on your budget...

happy hunting

I am a new comer planning to put up a decent audio system with a budget of rm4k.

I am mostly into slow music and oldies. My sources are CDs and video files in my notebook.

I am thinking of getting discountined Marantz PM5004 / CD5004 which would probably cost about RM2k. Is it a good idea?

Can someone tell me what is the best equipments I can get out of my budget?

Also, what is the best way to play some of the songs that I have in my notebook since not all CD players come with USB port.

Look forward to any ideas. Thank you so much.

here's my suggestion

for amplifier, if you don't mind china made brands (nowadays they do really produce impressive products), you might want to check out Audio GD Precision 1.
Based on the technical diagram and circuits, the amps are built with quality parts and properly designed.
at 90watts x 2 @ 8ohms, its quite a good bargain. Price is 2480 from liquidgal at the audio/music garage sale.
They have a showroom in Kota Damansara where you can listen to it
The other amp that you can consider is the Topping T60 amp.....which is affordable and not bad sounding..RM600 per unit

speakers, i'll recommend the XLS-Encore by Curve Acoustics.....great local made speakers......it's quick natural sounding with a smooth roll off......price is 1300...look for forummer FX20

since you already have a laptop, i suppose your laptop comes with cd/dvd unit......why not consider a USB DAC??

honestly Marantz entry is not worth playing unless you are really into Marantz

if you don't mind used units....look for Marantz CD63 KI Edition or CD6000 KI Edition...they should be in the range of 1000 to 1200 depending on condition....these are one of the best made Marantz cdp.....

if you love oldies....this cd player will put life into the Elvis, Nat King Cole, Shirley Basey and many more....

happy hunting

Ya wor but true. The PM series from Marantz is considered entry level. My new PM6004 + CD6004 bought early last year only cost MYR3,800 so 2nd hand for PM5004 + CD5004 should be in the range of MYR2K or less.

Don't mind Hushymushy... he has got "picky" ears from listening to too much good music from very high end tube systems. Hehehehehehehe... I find entry level Marantz not only acceptable but way above average. Quite good in fact. Second hand systems are ok... no need to burn them in. Saves time. My system is still in the burning in stage after more than four months from the box. Will probably take another year or so before it sounds ok. The bass is coming in now but not there just yet whereas the treble is still a wee bit coarse.

Still in a process of burn in PM6005, don't have the luxury called time anyway I'm satisfied with my peasant setup right now.

Definitely agree with you on that point, especially for amplifiers and DACs as Chinese manufacturers actually do churn out decent products.

Thanks for all the helpful inputs.

GI Jie, I saw somewhere, new Marantz PM5004 + CD5004 are going at about RM2k. For new comer like me, this will save me RM2k (as compared to go for the current PM6005+CD6005). The savings can then go for a pair of decent desktop speakers + cables etc. Make sense?

Can you recommend me some matching speakers that I should test on?

I am not really into Marantz brand, just happens to come across that it fits into my requirements.

Thank you...

Speaking of analog, hmm I had deal with a hifi fever guy, he claimed that everything can be DIY, except of CD player, that means they do speakers, burn CD, amplifiers, cables but not CD player lol, it seem sth rotating is highly technical to be done perfectly =.= I wonder it's stability otherwise hmm.gif

Ya...that is what I will be doing. In fact I will be putting in four different parallel lines into my study. Two will be utilised for each monoblock whereas I will use the third one for the preamp and the CD player and the lights whilst the fourth one will be for my aircon.

At the sitting room where the entertainment console will be, I will also be putting in four parallel lines to accommodate the TV, Astro, BR player & my Krell integrated amp, preamp & CD player. Lucky the Maxis Fibrenet socket is located somewhere else.

Bro, any special wall sockets I need to look at?

try to separate your lights and cd player....
rather you share preamp and cd player than your cd player with your lights.....you might get noise

if you wanna use US sockets, wattgate is good...but hard to find in MY...
i'll still looking for mine....

other brands like Furutech, Sine, Cardas are quite good too

i prefer wattgate as it is the most common and cheaper compared to Furutech or Cardas

standard wire awg for wall outlet is 2.5mm. if possible up to 10mm cable for wall outlet.
best option:
a dedicated phase for hifi wall outlet with a sub db(at hifi room) as recommended by hushymushy
or
a dedicated DB to all ur hifi wall outlet. u can upgrade to a better DB switch

* kindly check the wall outlet phase after reno is done. preferably its NOT terbalik phase

US wall outlet is recommended as most better aftermarket power cords are US plug
