Need recommendation for an integrated amp + a CD player. Budget is around 10k for the two.

I auditioned the Naim Nait 5i + the Naim CD player but was not blown away by it. Felt no emotion from the music. I am currently using Diamond 9.1 speakers. I have another audition set up this week to test the Rega Apollo + the Rega Mira 3 but not hoping for much after testing the Naim.

Hopefully someone can suggest another system to audition that would match the Diamonds. Thanks.

Diamond is budget system, cant really match with Naim or Rega. You need to upgrade the speaker like Epos, Proac or Sonus Faber then you will be blown away. Diamonds limits your system. If you wana keep the diamond, try electronics from CA, Marantz or Nad.

Sorry but I disagree. Yes Diamond 9.1 is a budget speaker but I once had a Cambridge Audio P500 power amp driving these speakers and using my reciever as the preamp. I was totally blown away by the sound it produced. The only problem was that it only sounded great around 2am till 6am in the morning. So then I decided to get the NAD C372 due to its high power reserve but that sounded bad 24x7.

So now I'm looking for a higher end intergrated amp to make these babies sing again but so far have been dissapointed.

P/S: If anyone has the Cambridge Audio P500 + A500, please let me know if you want to sell it. biggrin.gif

only sounded great around 2am till 6am in the morning? U mean the listening environment during these time?

If u're looking for a upgrade from your Diamond 9.1, I would suggest u to upgrade the speaker instead of amp + CDP, heard from many seasoned audiophile, for the same amount of money and u gotta choose between CDP, AMP and Speaker, always opt for speaker, it does return with significant improvement.

If u favor the Diamond 9.1 warm sound, the next best upgrade would be ATC SCM7 or Sonus Faber Concertino Domus. IMHO to spend 10k driving the Diamond 9.1, would be abit wasted.

Perfect hifi is doing a promotional package of Concertino Domus + Audio Analogue combo at RM9999, go and have an audition, it may suits u wink.gif

Do you know why your system sounded best from 2am till 6am? I strongly believe it is due to electricity consumption. Starting midnight (on weekdays I would say) mostly people are on bed and this is the time when electricity is least consumed around your neighborhood. Less electricity consumption means less electricity fluctuation, hence the improvement you found on your system. Maybe you could try experimenting some power conditioner or power cables.

Well, maybe you knew this and sorry if I am like explaining ABC to you. But again, using 10k electronics to drive 9.1s will limit your electronics. Your 10k electronics will need better judgment. I am not against Wharfy as myself is a proud owner of 9.1s

Cheers.

I have tried a power conditioner and it makes the sound better during the day but makes it worse then it was during the night. Somehow I feel it limits the current flowing from the mains into the amp. The reason I wanted a good amp so that it could deal with these power fluctuations since it would have a better power supply using better components and transformer.

Guess I was hoping for too much!!! biggrin.gif

Nah you are not hoping too much, the journey of finding the suitable sound is rather exhausting. But too bad I am into Home Cinema, can't really help here. Maybe you ought to start a thread for this, there are many sifus out there willing to help.

Good luck mate wink.gif

all i can say is the journey of seeking the so called 'right sound' is endless.
but after 8 years into stereo hifi , i still on the path.

its important to remind yrself that audio is not about expensive gears = good /balance sound.

it requires lotsa patience , time along the journey to acquire the knowledge of room treatment (sound diffusion/reflection from wall/floor/ceiling), amp/ speaker/hifi rack material, weight & positioning, basic principles of amplifier, sound matching/complement with each of yr gears from power cables, interconnects, passive/active pre-amp, power amp, analog Turn tables, solid-state/valve amplifiers, types of vacuum tubes/ solid state transistor sound, balance/ power conditioner, plugs&sockets n etc etc.

too much to mention about..
afterall its not just about audio , i am happy to meet and share with ppl with the same interest /hobby.

Guys, need some advice.

I got a DENON PMA 700 amp to replace my old NAD that went bust awhile ago.

Now looking for a pair of speakers to match the DENON. Right now, I'm using my trusty Wharfedale Diamond 8.1s but looking to upgrade.

Price should be within the 1.5 - 1.6K. Can probably stretch it a bit, but not by much.

I've auditioned the AE Neo 1 and the Quad11L. Anything else within that range that would be good partner to the DENON?

Thanks for the info. I'm leaning towards the Quads as well. Anywhere I demo a pair. Was at Amcorp mall, but they only had the Maple finish. Looking for one in Piano Black.

Hi All Hifi Sifus,

I have question about CD connection.

Do you guys think that CD player connect to AVR using coaxial is better off than conventional using inter-connect to a pure hifi amp?

I always think that CD player to AVR is the better choice as signal transfer is in digital, less distortion. Correct me if I m wrong. But then, hifi amp is supposed to be more musical, true?

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps few more rounds of auditions with the other mentioned options such as Epos and MA as well.
