i have a P4 2.26Ghz Northwood (FSB 533), which i'm trying to overclock beyong 2.6ghz.

i'm too chicken to play with the overclocking settings in my bios (mobo=Gigabyte 8IK1100 875P), but gigabyte provides a software called Easytune which allows software overclocking within windows. Using that, everytime i try to get beyond 2.6ghz (increased my system bus from 133mhz to 155mhz), my pc just restarts by itself.

I've taken the risk and bumped up the voltage of my vcore from 1.5000v to 1.5500v. Dare not go higher than that with my crappy CM Aero 4. But i still can't get past the 2.6ghz barrier.

I heard that my chip can only achieve the max frequency of 2.6ghz coz that's the max internal clock that it could handle. Is that true?

P/S: I've no idea what i just said just now.

yeah...i was wondering that myself. I couldn't even get it to go beyond 2.6ghz and he says it can go all the way to 3.2? is it on air cooling or water cooling?

if it can really hit 3.2, then

i see your voltage was at 1.68v. i dun even dare to go beyond 1.6v (my default was 1.5)

so u think i should just dump the software OC and meddle with the bios instead?
the problem is i do not know the limit of my chip. if overclocked too much, later become charcoal.

btw, the easytune software from gigabyte also overclocks the PCI, AGP, RAM frequencies as well (do not know 1f it's 1:1 for the ram or not), but i managed to run my RAM from 333 to 400 @ 2.6ghz.

hhmm...i'll give that a try then....

i finally dumped my O/C software and dived straight into my bios.

managed to only bump up to 160 b4 windows gave me the finger.

tried 165 @ 1.6v but windows didn't like it.

so now it's at 160 @ 1.6v, which is around 2.73ghz (up from 2.26. ori vcore=1.5v), which isn't much. It makes very little difference from my software OC)

then there's another problem. after i did the oc, i can't access my device manager. neither could i access my network connections (my LAN icon in my taskbar went MIA), but i still have internet connection.

RAM running at 400 (ori=333). AGP & PCI are locked.

also, after i o/c, windows asked me to re-activiate windows (i use ori) coz there was a significant hardware change. though reactivating it was no problem.

where did i go wrong?

the icon was there b4 i o/c. now when i access my device manager or network connections property, it's empty. i downclock back to my default speed, but it's still empty.

anyways, i am running at 2.73Ghz @ 1.5875Vcore now and it's quite stable. but i have got to solve the above problems now.
