Key points

- Disabled friendly

- Same body design

- Auto kneel function to vary the height of the bus, to make it easier for the disabled to board the bus (can be alerted by button)

Bus is the most basic and important public transport component, complementing rail.

PAC will call in Prasarana for further probe
by Hemananthani Sivanandam

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 10, 2010): The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will be calling officials from Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd over the next two weeks for further questioning on various issues highlighted in the Auditor-General’s (AG) 2008 report.

"We decided to call them (Prasarana) over the next two weeks to get more information on certain things that is reported in the Audit report," said PAC chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid after the weekly meeting in Parliament today.

He said the committee will be reviewing a few things including the purchase of the 1,294 used buses by Prasarana in 2003.

Prasarana, which operators RapidKL spent RM93 million to buy the used buses from DRB-Hicom and Park May Bhd, only to have most of them turned to the scrap heap two years later.

In November 2005, some 1,139 buses were deemed unfit for operations and were de-commissioned.

This was revealed by PAC after its members visited a RapidKL bus ‘graveyard’ in Sungai Buaya, Rawang on Tuesday. There is another ‘graveyard’ in Serendah.

It was reported last year that Prasarana had incurred millions in losses from 2005 to 2007, due to poor management. Accumulated losses as at Dec 31, 2007 were RM839.81 million.

The government-owned company was also criticised for a number of other issues including losses incurred when it bought KL Infrastructure Group Bhd (KLIG).

In the 513-page AG's report, which included 20 pages on Prasarana, it said that the company is in danger of not meeting its remaining bond commitments amounting to RM7.1 billion if it fails to manage its cash flow position.

Azmi said the committee will present a comprehensive report on other issues such as the double-tracking rail project and stolen jet engines before Parliament reconvenes in March. -- theSun
