if u don't have another backup of your current backup, i am afraid you will not able to retrieve them.
p/s: i never restore from backup as during the old days of 2.0 and 3.0, restoring from backup do mess up your phone in some ways.
I always make a backup by copy the latest sycn backup restore file from itunes directory so that still can restore back in case the default one corrupted, i think this is faster than using SSH method to retrieve them apart from that, before any update of firmware, you can opt for the SSH method of accessing SMS, Contacts in your iOS file system and copy them out (backup) and place them back once update if complete.
