Hi All
Just wanted to know how much weight can a plaster ceiling stand?
I have a light which around 4.5Kg.
Not sure such light can cause the plaster ceiling to be dented or break.

Appreciate your advise on this.

Thanks

8 Kg is very heavy? As far as I know, the plaster ceiling guys will put in additional support to distribute the load, but better to stick with down lights to prevent sagging in the long run.

Anything beyond 1kg will cause it to sag in the long run. You must have support beam in the plaster ceiling to support the weight.

I think so too as I have a bad experience before also. After 1 year the plaster ceiling start to sag. My guess would be 2 kg ceiling light. Not sure whether its workmanship or inferior plaster ceiling material, but since then I've decided to use mostly downlights(china one...very light). If you need to have some variety, get those made from light material, or stick with wall lights for the heavy stuff.

Hi
Sorry to hijack this thread.
What if I have a ceiling mounted ventilation fan which approx 1.8KG.
My question is

1) Will it cause the plaster ceiling to sag in future
2) The ventilation fan has no ducting to blow out the air from my apartment
It will just suck the air from Kitchen and blow the air into the plaster ceiling
Not sure any problem like mold grow on top of the ceiling in future?

Thanks

I am planning to install hanging lights for my new house which comes with plaster ceiling. I was told that I need to find the structural support for the plaster ceiling to mount the lights. My question is how to find the support because i can only see wires coming out from the ceiling. Anybody can help me with some advice?

1) Yes.
2) Yes, it will have all the dirty stuff that the fan suxk up. Use water pipe to connect the ventilation fan with external air.

You can't. You need to scrap the plaster ceiling off in order to add additional strut, and redo back the plaster ceiling.

Thanks edyek. Do you mean that I need to cut open the plaster ceiling, add strut can cover it back? Looks like I can't install those lights on my own :-(

if in doubts, provide support from the roof truss, dont direct mount on the plaster ceiling. extra support from roof truss wont cost that much

Hi
What do you mean by use water pipe to connect the ventilation fan with external air?
Is it something like the one in the attachment?
